A Middle East Peace That Could Happen (But Won’t)

In Washington-Speak, “Palestinian State” Means “Fried Chicken”

Noam Chomsky (Tom Dispatch)

The fact that the Israel-Palestine conflict grinds on without resolution might appear to be rather strange. For many of the world’s conflicts, it is difficult even to conjure up a feasible settlement. In this case, it is not only possible, but there is near universal agreement on its basic contours: a two-state settlement along the internationally recognized (pre-June 1967) borders — with “minor and mutual modifications,” to adopt official U.S. terminology before Washington departed from the international community in the mid-1970s.

The basic principles have been accepted by virtually the entire world, including the Arab states (who go on to call for full normalization of relations), the Organization of Islamic States (including Iran), and relevant non-state actors (including Hamas). A settlement along these lines was first proposed at the U.N. Security Council in January 1976 by the major Arab states. Israel refused to attend the session. The U.S. vetoed the resolution, and did so again in 1980. The record at the General Assembly since is similar. (...)

Rockets launched from Gaza fell in Sderot

I thought Israel had evacuated everyone from Sdrot as one of the first cities before the mobilization of reservists?!

These desperate launch of rockets that only cause fear and anger is not going to help Palestinians in any way.

But I guess, it is their desperate show of defiance against the military might of Israel, to show that they are still fighting.

If the peace deal between Arafat and Shamir was not just a sham sell out by Arafat to gain status in delusion of having a Palestinian state, and included real issues such as status of #Jerusalem, disbanding of illegal settlements and the compensation or plan for millions of refugees to have the right to return, there could be a real #peace between the two nations.

Unfortunately, #Shamir was killed and Ariel #Sharon the butcher of #Sabra and #Chatila became PM of Israel and killed #Arafat together with any hope of a real Palestinian state. Ever since then, situation has gone from bad to worse and more than half the population of occupied territories who were born after that "peace deal" have only seen betrayal after betrayal, followed by uprising, brutal crack down and expansion of illegal Jewish #settlements.

The corrupt and useless #PA who turned into extended hands of apartheid regime lost it's power to the radical Hamas that gave Israel the excuse to put a deadly blockade against Gaza and turning into the world largest prison.

From then, we have only seen the spiral of violence on both sides, with the rise of serial liar and corrupt politician #Netanyahu who now have legitimized #Kahanist terrorist group in Israel while the "world" not only given up on a just and lasting peace between the 2 groups, but an unconditioned support of the most extreme form of #fascism in Israel while condemning the same escalation among Palestinians.

10s of thousands of people have died (the vast majority of them Palestinians), many more maimed by #IDF shooting on knee-caps and eyes of protesters for decades (an escalation of #Sharon's breaking the bones of palestinian kids to prevent them from participating in the first #Intifada).

Today we see the bloodiest escalation of this conflict, a level of violence that has gone beyond any laws of war and once again, the "world community" seems to be only condemning one side while cowardly "aaking" Israel to be merciful.

The mullahs in #Iran joyfully watching the conflict turn into a regional war in their wet dream of liberating Palestine or turn the world on fire (like their American evangelical christians) to enter the dooms day and return of #Mahdi (12rh imam of Shia) or #Jesus for the christian crazies.

All with 0 care about the suffering and death they are causing.

The West's hypocrisy towards Gaza's breakout is stomach-turning

Jonathan Cook (Middle East Eye)

There will be little sympathy in the West as, yet again, besieged Palestinians are bombed by Israel, their immense suffering justified by the term 'Israeli retaliation'.

(Text continues underneath the photo.)

Photo of mourners
Mourners react during the funeral of Palestinian twin babies Ossayd and Mohammad Abu Hmaid, their mother and their three sisters killed in Israeli strikes in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip on 8 October 2023 (Reuters).

The current outpouring of sympathy for Israel should make anyone with half a heart retch.

Not because it is not awful that Israeli civilians are dying and suffering in such large numbers. But because Palestinian civilians in Gaza have faced repeated rampages from Israel decade after decade, producing far more suffering, but have never elicited a fraction of the concern currently being expressed by western politicians or publics.

The West's hypocrisy over Palestinian fighters killing and wounding hundreds of Israelis and holding dozens more hostage in communities surrounding and inside besieged Gaza is stark indeed.

This is the first time Palestinians, caged in the coastal enclave, have managed to inflict a significant strike against Israel vaguely comparable to the savagery Palestinians in Gaza have faced repeatedly since they were entombed in a cage more than 15 years ago, when Israel began its blockade by land, sea and air in 2007.(…)

Watch how little sympathy and concern there will be from the West for the many Palestinian men, women and children who are killed once again by Israel. Their immense suffering will be obscured, and justified, by the term "Israeli retaliation". (…)

No one really cared while Gaza's Palestinans were subjected to a blockade imposed by Israel that denied them the essentials of life. (…)

No one really cared when it emerged that Gaza's Palestinians had been put on a "starvation diet" by Israel. (…)

No one really cared when Israel bombed the coastal enclave every few years, killing many hundreds of Palestinian civilians each time. (…)

No one really cared when Israeli snipers targeted nurses, youngsters and people in wheelchairs who came out to protest against their imprisonment by Israel. (…)

Western concern at the deaths of Israeli civilians at the hands of Palestinian fighters is hard to stomach. Have not many hundreds of Palestinian children died over the past 15 years in Israel's repeated bombing campaigns on Gaza? Did their lives not count as much as Israeli lives – and if not, why not? (…)

How does Israel have an "unquestionable right" to "defend itself" from the Palestinians whose territory it occupies and controls? (…)

Western governments so horrified by the Palestinian attack on Israel are also the governments that are remaining silent as Israel turns off the electricity [and water] to the prison that is Gaza - again in supposed "retaliation".

The collective punishment of two million Palestinians in Gaza, dependent on Israel for power because Israel surrounds and controls every aspect of their lives in the enclave, is a war crime.

Strangely, western officials understand it is a war crime when Russia bombs power stations in Ukraine, turning off the lights. They scream for Russian President Vladimir Putin to be dragged to the International Criminal Court in the Hague. So why is it so difficult for them to understand the parallels of what Israel is doing to Gaza?

There are two immediate, and contrasting, lessons to be learnt from what has happened this weekend.

The first is that the human spirit cannot be caged indefinitely. Palestinians in Gaza have been constantly devising new ways to break free from their chains. (…)

Israel will batter the enclave back into submission with massive bombardments, but only "in retaliation", of course. The Palestinians' craving for freedom and dignity will not be diminished. Another form of resistance, doubtless more brutal still, will emerge.

And the parties most responsible for that brutality will be Israel and the West that supports it so slavishly, because Israel refuses to stop brutalising the Palestinians it forces to live under its rule.

The second lesson is that Israel, endlessly indulged by its western patrons, still has no incentive to internalise the fundamental truth above. (…)

Already, the "good Israelis" - opposition leaders Yair Lapid and Benny Gantz - are in discussions with Neyanyahu to join him in an "emergency unity government".

What "emergency"? The emergency of Palestinians demanding the right not to live as prisoners in their own homeland.(…)

Times of #Israel: #Netanyahu hands Smotrich full authority to expand existing settlements

— "Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government passed a controversial resolution Sunday that gives practically all control over planning approval for construction in #WestBank #settlements to Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, an #ultranationalist advocate of settlements.

The decision approved at Sunday morning’s cabinet meeting, which takes immediate effect, also dramatically expedites and eases the process for expanding existing West Bank settlements and retroactively legalizing some illegal outposts.

The resolution was warmly welcomed by settlement leaders for the expected boost to settlement construction it is likely to create."

Statement by Israeli conscientious objector Nave Shabtay

I held a gun in my hands before I was 10 years old.

You could say I was raised in the Israeli army, or at least in the spirit of the Israeli Army. My father, who was a #military officer during most of my childhood, took my sister and me to his military base on weekends. There I held a gun, entered tanks, and collected gun bullets lying on the ground. As a child, that was cool! I also grew up without a grandfather. From very early on, on every national Memorial Day, I would skip the school ceremony to attend the grave of my grandfather who was killed in the 1973 war (The Yom Kippur War). I was nurtured on the #glory of the #army and on war-related bereavement.

But as the years went by, I became more aware, and I started to attend demonstrations against the #occupation with my mother. When I was at high school we started visiting Sheikh Jarrah, where I met families that stood to lose all they had, and to end up in the streets with their children as a result of the #Jerusalem municipality campaign, jointly with the settlers to empty Jerusalem of #Palestinians. Among other things, I saw a fence that settlers had build through a private Palestinian backyard, and the #police who were securing it, prevening all from entering, until we ourselves yanked it from the ground. In Sheikh Jarrah, the police stopped and interrogated me for the sole reason that I had a Palestinian flag. Almost weekly, police violently seize flags from the protestors.

Although I was raised in a #militaristic family, where the army was a sacred cow, and although I was told in school that soldiers are heroes, I never wanted to enlist in the army. My unwillingness to enlist, was transformed over the years to the act of active refusal of the draft and the more I realized what soldiers really do. I realized that there is an entire system, military, economic and ideological, whose task is to preserve the occupation and the #oppression of the Palestinians.

This year, during the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah, tens of masked #settlers went to Masafer Yatta, threw stones at the Palestinian residents, at their children and at their houses. Windshields were smashed, and many people injured, including a three-year-old child who was injured in his head. This event was not unique. It was just one more day in the violent reality that the population in Masafer Yatta endure, where attacks by settlers are a daily occurrence.

And where is the #army in this story? The same one I was expected to enlist in? Where are the heroic #soldiers that we hear of? In almost every #violent incident perpetrated by settlers the army, under the best of circumstances, does nothing. More frequently, however, it enables, supports and even provides weapons and backup to the settlers. This is the occupation – this #violence is not a bug, it is a feature. The state, the army, and the settlers have the same purpose – in Masaffer Yatta and throughout the rest of the occupied Palestinian territories: the creation of territorial continuity in Israeli control that cuts the West Bank into pieces. These aims – territorial control and the removal of the Palestinians – has led to the biggest population transfer since 1967, taking place as we speak in Masafer Yatta. The army and the settlers are equal partners in this project.

The occupation and the oppression of the Palestinians are closely linked to Israeli #capitalism. For the Israeli elites, the occupation is #profitable. Israeli Weapon companies make millions from selling #weapons to regimes such as Yemen and the United Arabs Emirates. Weapons that are sold after they were tried on Gaza and the West Bank – and are promoted by the misery, the poverty, and the death that it had created. As well, the occupation is profitable – as a device to abuse Palestinian workers. Israeli #corporations and wealthy people employ Palestinians both, in the occupied territories and inside Israel, and #abuse them with long working hours and low salaries, taking advantage of the fact that the Palestinians have no way to secure their rights. In that way the rich profit directly from the oppression of the Palestinians people.

The #narrative of the country perpetuated through the educational system provides a narrow #colonialist view on history and on the reality in the state of #Israel. It tells us that the country was built by heroic pioneers, without ever discussing what and who was here before. It tells us about villages and cities that were built, but not how Palestinian lands were bought and their inhabitants banished. It creates a false unity of Jewish interests with the Jewish rich, rather than with the Palestinians. It tries to make us think that the occupation benefits us, the Jewish workers, in order to eliminate any possibility of true solidarity with the Palestinians or bringing an end to the #occupation – all of which stands to hurt in their pocket.

We live in a country that call itself self enlightened and liberal, "the only democracy in the middle east", but at the same time, runs a murderous #apartheid regime and commits war crimes regularly and systematically. Israel implements policies of house demolitions, journalists’ killings, of breaking into homes, mass arrests, the arrest of children, collective punishments; illegal #settlements, a siege on #Gaza and much more on a daily basis. This country exploits our personal loss and pain over the people we loved and who died because of this cruel reality, to further its #propaganda.

As humans we must resist this reality. As humans we must refuse to demolish homes, arrest children, and refuse the destructive reality that Palestinians live in. As humans we must make amends for the wrongs of the past of the occupation and the Nakba.

As workers we must show #solidarity and #cooperation with Palestinian workers, and fight against the rich that profit from our #expolitation.

As potential army inductees, this is our opportunity not only to serve the country and the army. It is our opportunity to support the fight for #justice, #peace, and #equality. Whether through psychological disqualification, by appealing to the army’s conscientious objection’s committee or through serving jail sentences, we refuse to serve in the occupation army. We must fight for a better future. It will not be easy. Our opponents are strong. However, where there is #oppression, there is also #brotherhood and #solidarity, and that no one can take from us.

In solidarity,

Nave

Bayer at ‘End of Rope’ in Roundup Cases, St. Louis Attorney Says

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected a bid by biotech giant Bayer to end thousands of lawsuits alleging its Roundup weedkiller causes cancer, likely costing the company billions of dollars in settlements.

The decision is another key defeat for Bayer. Together, the setbacks are expected to eliminate a legal standstill in unresolved cases, according to plaintiffs’ lawyers. Bayer now essentially has two choices, they say: Go to trial to fight more cases, or reach additional out-of-court settlements.

“Everything has kind of fallen apart on Bayer,” said Jim Onder, an attorney from the St. Louis-based Onder Law Firm. “They’re kind of at the end of the rope.”

Onder represents just under 20,000 plaintiffs in Roundup cases — about half of the unresolved caseload nationwide, he said.

Bayer said it “respectfully disagrees” with the court’s decision and that the company is “fully prepared to manage the litigation risk associated with potential future claims in the U.S.
