The Young Uyghurs Mobilizing to Keep Their Culture Alive

https://www.yesmagazine.org/social-justice/2021/03/04/culture-youth-uyghur

With the rights abuses have come myriad efforts to eradicate Uyghur culture. Authorities have burned books, bulldozed mosques, and banned so many aspects of traditional Uyghur life, including prayer and various dress and dietary customs. In the Chinese government’s own words, uncovered by a 2018 Agence France-Presse investigation, the camps’ purpose is to “break [Uyghurs’] lineage, break their roots, break their connections, and break their origins.” (Publicly, China claims these measures are necessary to prevent terrorism.)

How I #escaped a Chinese #internment #camp

Zumrat Dawut explains how the government in Urumqi began to monitor and persecute Uyghurs. "In November, 2016, Chinese authorities began to build #police stations every 300 meters in the residential areas. They forced us to install a special application on our phone. Each time I said anything related to the Muslim #religion, the police would call me immediately after and ask me what I had said. People would be seized if the authorities found anything representing the Muslim faith in their homes. So people threw out their stuff. The sewers were lines with their copies of the Quran and other objects."Zumrat Dawut explains how the government in Urumqi began to monitor and persecute #Uyghurs. Since 2014, the world has gradually been learning about the horrors that occur in China’s #Xinjiang #Uyghur Autonomous Region. #Media reports have described how #Uyghurs are put in “vocational training camps,” which are effectively concentration camps. People can be put there for the smallest expression of religiosity, and any hope of getting out requires undergoing a “reeducation” process, though some never escape at all. Members of Xinjiang’s other ethnic groups are put in the camps, too — primarily Kazakhs. Since February 2021, the relatives and loved ones of Kazakh people currently being held in the Xinjiang camps have held daily #protests outside of the Chinese Consulate in #Almaty. Meduza is publishing photographer Ofeliya Zhakaeva’s project “Nearby,” which focuses on Chinese Kazakhs whose relatives have disappeared into the Xinjiang internment system. She photographed protest participants outside of the Consulate with objects that remind them of their loved ones and recorded their stories.

Chinese research on Xinjiang mummies seen as promoting revisionist history

One outside expert says the report reflects China’s efforts to rewrite ethnic history.

A new Chinese study on the ancient populations of Xinjiang purports to show modern-day residents descend from a mix of ethnicities, but scientists and experts on the region cautioned the findings are being used to support China’s forced assimilation policy toward the predominately Muslim #Uyghurs

It's time to say, "No!" to Apple's use of slave labor

#politics #Apple #SlaveLabor #SteveJobs #Uyghurs #Forced-Labour #SumOfUs

*"SumOfUs members have put the world’s most valuable company on notice. Again.

At Friday’s AGM, 34% Apple investors defied the company’s instructions and voted for our shareholder proposal on forced labor. Even the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund -- Norway's, at $1.3 trillion -- voted with us.

It’s a vote tally that sends a clear message to Apple bosses that they have to take serious steps to protect the workers in its supply chain who make components for your iPhone and MacBook.

Just two years ago our proposal secured 40% investor support and a few months later Apple published its first ever human rights policy.

Now, it has to live up to its promises on forced labor.

We were everywhere Apple bosses turned during their big week. Two days before the AGM, we released a video of real Apple customers reacting to the news that Apple products are implicated in forced labor, that was seen a staggering 841 thousand times in total.

But we didn’t give Tim Cook a break. On the day of the AGM we installed a mock Uyghur forced labor camp right outside Apple’s flagship Washington DC store.

The AGM itself was via video conference, so no trip to California this year! The SumOfUs member proposal was presented at the meeting by our friend Zumretay from World Uyghur Congress.

Seven SumOfUs members came together to take action after reports of instances of forced labor surfaced.

After they filed the resolution, Apple exces tried and failed to stop investors from discussing it. But it still got support from Norway’s $1.3tn wealth fund, and backing from influential corporate governance advisors, ISS.

And with over a third of investors supporting us, Apple knows it needs to show real action to avoid a huge backlash before the next AGM rolls around.

Anthropologist Margaret Mead is often quoted as saying, never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.

You could be the next person to drive corporate change for a better world.

Thanks for all that you do,
Sondhya, Vicky and the team at SumOfUs"*
