Can all Android users access the F-Droid store easily or just jail broken phones? I've had it with the app submission process on PlaySstore. I'm making niche apps. I don't care about hypothetically "hitting it big". Fuck em if FDroid is possible for motivated users. #rant #android #google #fdroid

TEST: Your Galaxy phone will now automatically get locked if someone steals it

Samsung Galaxy phone held in a hand. The screen shows the standard blue/purple/turquoise screen background with a Google search bar near the bottom of the screen. At the bottom is a navigation bar with for icons on for phone, messages, play store, and Chrome browser.
At Google I/O last month, Google announced many features for Android that prevent thieves from accessing a stolen device and data in it. The company said that it would roll out these features to devices running Android 10 and newer versions of the OS later this year.

The two features we are talking about are called Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock. When these features become available on your Galaxy phone or tablet, they will automatically lock your device when someone steals it or tries to take it off the grid by switching off the cellular network, internet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.

Why this actually needs “AI”, I don’t know, though. Is machine learning not good enough, or plain old trained algorithms (or 4th Industrial Revolution tech). Seems everything that processes anything in 2024 is AI-powered. I really can’t wait for the buzzword of 2025 to kick in. It’s amazing how the old words then quickly disappear from the PR slogans.

Still, having “automated” detection and locking for theft is a good thing to prevent the loss of phones. I just hope it does not lead to escalated levels of theft, where like with vehicle theft, it moved to kidnapping or hijacking because vehicles became too difficult to target on their own without the owner.

Use DroidCam to turn your Android phone into a wireless webcam for Linux or Windows PC’s and laptops

Two windows are shown open - one on the left is titled DroidCam Client and shows a preview of some flowers standing in a glass of water, with some icons at the bottom to increase/decrease zoom, brightness, autofocus, and switching perspective and rotating the image. The rightmost window is titled Skype Options and shows the video settings selected, with the source name as DroidCam Source 1, and the same preview image is shown of the flowers in a glass of water.
This is probably most useful on desktop computers that have no webcam, but there is also an OBS Studio plugin, so an Android phone could also act as a secondary webcam when needed on those odd occasions. Also, seeing this can connect wirelessly, you could place this Android webcam further away from your PC as most desktop webcams connect via a USB cable, which can limit its reach.

The free version of DroidCam will get the job done for the most part, but keep in mind that it only allows SD-quality video streams. The higher video quality (1080p) and extra features such as Smooth FPS, video mirroring, the ability to adjust, autofocus, brightness and contrast, and more can be unlocked by purchasing DroidCam X, the paid version of the app.

FUTO Keyboard is an open-source mobile keyboard for Android that stays private and offline

Mobile keyboard with white background and letters in black. Below it is a caption saying: Your keyboard shouldn't connect to the Internet. Unlike most popular keyboards, our keyboard does not have Internet permissions. What you say and what you type is none of our business.
If your computer keyboard doesn’t ask for internet access, neither should your mobile keyboard. FUTO Keyboard is a modern keyboard app with voice input and autocorrect, that is completely offline and never connects to the internet, in order to ensure your privacy and security.

FUTO Keyboard contains modern features such as autocorrect, voice input and swipe typing. It is also configurable to suit your personal taste.

No data is collected, nor shared anywhere. It is still in alpha version but can be downloaded either from the Google Play Store, from F-Droid, or using Obtanium to update directly from the APK releases on GitHub.

After lunch yesterday, we went to the #HistoryOfScienceMuseum in #Oxford. It's not very big but contains some really fascinating exhibits. It is right next to the #SheldonianTheatre and well worth a visit.

Here are wooden models of the #FivePlatonicSolids.
Small platonic solids

This is a beautiful example of #HandWriting in a book. #Writing like this is certainly a lost art these days.
Handwritten book on astronomy

Here I am explaining to my spouse the similarities and differences between #Octants, #Sextants and #Quadrants.
Me explaining something to the camera user.

This wooden box contains some immaculate #brass #DrawingInstruments. Another rarity these days but I do remember learning how to use similar #instruments while studying at university.

A brass #sundial.
A brass sundial in a glass display

Without anything but manual #SurveyingEquipment, humans were able accurately to map out the entire globe. It's amazing what can be achieved when humanity works together. But also, this model is absolutely gorgeous.
A model globe approximately 40 cm in diameter

Not to be outdone, the #astronomers mapped the #sky and here it appears on a companion globe.
Astronomical globe plotting the position of the stars

No computers were around then but the ingenuity of humans to develop calculating instruments to allow them to crunch numbers meant the creation of some devices of stupendous cunning.
A slide rule and a cylinder used to conduct high-precision calculations

To this day, trainee pilots have to master the #CircularSlideRule in order to do calculations for various tasks. Before flying was ever developed, such #SlideRules were in common use.

This #camera is another fine example of hand-made instruments. The craft and skill of whoever made it is a marvel.

Yesterday, we went on a day trip to #Oxford by #train. No other means of powered transport was used as we #cycled to and from our local #RailwayStation.

Here is the #countryside zooming past the train window.
Blurred image of trees

It was a nice day to be out and the city has its own distinctive #architecture, much dominated by the UniversityOfOxford.
A building of the University of Oxford

Some of the centre is a zero-emission zone or #ZEZ, aimed at curbing the use of polluting vehicles. Such vehicle owners need to pay to use roads in that area.

Here I am walking up a street with some nice buildings in the background.

Oxford #TownHall is in a similar style to other buildings in the city.

I'm not sure what this building is but I don't think it's part of the university.

/e/OS Is Better Than Android. You Should Try It

Wired

Even if you aren’t technically inclined, this privacy-first mobile operating system helps you escape surveillance capitalism. (...)

One project that has created a great user experience on top of AOSP is /e/OS. For the past six months, I've used nothing else, and I am here to say that the world of Android alternatives has never been better. If you're looking to get out of the Google box, come on in, the water's fine. (...)

While Android is open source, Google has taken a page from the Microsoft playbook of old and uses things like its “Play Integrity” APIs to ensure that apps will only work with Google's version of Android. This way Google can wave the open source flag while effectively preventing downstream forks from working. (...)
