WHEN Bill “Bojangles” Robinson tap danced his way up and down a set of stairs, hand-in-hand with child star Shirley Temple in the 1935 film The Little Colonel, he almost stole the show.
The scene made cinematic history as the first interracial dance pairing in a movie, but it also stirred controversy, being cut from the film when it was screened in America’s south.
Dexterous, energetic and always cheerful on stage and screen, offstage Robinson also worked to break down barriers for African-Americans.

- En 1878, Van Gogh obtient une mission d'évangéliste en Belgique, auprès des mineurs de charbon du Borinage, dans la région de Mons. Il arrive à Cuesmes pour s'occuper des mineurs en proie à des conditions de vie misérables. Allant au bout de ses convictions, Van Gogh décide de vivre comme ceux auprès desquels il prêche, partageant leurs difficultés, jusqu'à dormir sur la paille, dans une vieille baraque.
- In 1878 werd Van Gogh naar de Borinage (o.a. in Cuesmes, in de omgeving van Bergen) gestuurd, waar hij op 1 februari 1879 aan een proefperiode als lekenprediker tussen de mijnwerkers begon. Hij werkte er in bittere armoede en was depressief. Hij woonde in een barak en sliep op stro. Hij voelde de ontberingen van de mijnwerkers diep aan en wilde zich met hen vereenzelvigen.
- In 1878 Van Gogh took up a post as a missionary in the coal-mining district of Borinage (inter alia in Cuesmes, not far away from Mons in Belgium). To show support for his impoverished congregation, he decided to live in a small shack where he slept on straw. He wanted to identify himself with the miserable plight of the mineworkers.
- Im Jahre 1878 fand Van Gogh eine Anstellung als Hilfsprediger im Borinage, einem belgischen Steinkohlerevier (unter anderem in Cuesmes, nicht weit von Mons), wo die Menschen unter besonders harten Bedingungen lebten. Dort identifizierte er sich in hohem Maße mit dem Schicksal der Bergarbeiter : er lebte in ärmlichsten Verhältnissen und schlief auf Stroh in einer alten Baracke.
- Nel 1878 Van Gogh andò a vivere nel Borinage (tra l'altro in Cuesmes, vicino a Mons), una regione carbonifera belga dove i lavoratori vivevano in condizioni di estremo disagio. In questo miserabile centro minerario, povero tra i poveri, van Gogh si prese cura dei malati. Dormiva sulla paglia, in una baracca decadente : voleva identificarsi con le dure condizioni di vita dei minatori.
