Ada & Zangemann - A Tale of Software, Skateboards, and Raspberry Ice Cream

from FSFE

https://fsfe.org/activities/ada-zangemann/index.en.html

The famous inventor Zangemann lives in a huge villa high above the city. Adults and children alike love his inventions and are desperate to have them. But then something happens: when Zangemann wants to take another close-up look at his inventions during a walk through the city, a child hits him in the shin with the skateboard. That hurts! Enraged, the inventor makes a momentous decision... The clever girl Ada sees through what is going on. Together with her friends, she forges a plan.\
\
This illustrated book tells the story of the famous inventor Zangemann and the girl Ada, a curious tinkerer. Ada begins to experiment with hardware and software, and in the process realises how crucial it is for her and others to control technology.\
\
A book that arouses children's interest in tinkering and encourages shaping technology. From age 6 to 106.

Born before 1918? This book is not for you. :)

There is a video. Here are links to some copies. Not all of these worked for me. It's 31:32 long.

The Free Software Database v. 250724.218 is online!

What's new?

We've transitioned away from Uploadcare CDN and Polyfill.io as those services were no longer owned by the original companies.
Since we've always used the Subresource Integrity (SRI) security technology, there has never been any risk, but they were causing occasional network delays.

This is only a patch and it will soon be followed by important improvements in the next days.

What to expect?

  1. We have decided to be more attentive to user feedback, so the indexed free or open source projects involved in abuses to the detriment of the free software volunteers will suffer a heavy and publicly visible penalty. They won't be removed, but a warning will be clearly visible, a permanent search engine penalty will be imposed and alternatives may be recommended.

  2. All resources will be associated with a developer, either a person or a project. The karma (reputation) of a software will now depend on the average reputation of the other resources by the same author. This will serve as useful indicator to those searching for a project to volunteer for.

  3. We plan to gradually reduce the dependency on Content Delivery Networks.
This will have a positive impact on speed and privacy.

Parabolic Wins Outstanding New Free Software Contributor for Nick Logozzo at LibrePlanet

Parabolic is another YouTube downloader for Linux

Unfortunately, it's only available as a Snap or Flathub.

https://nickvision.org/parabolic.html

I haven't tried this. The documentation (https://htmlpreview.github.io/?https://raw.githubusercontent.com/NickvisionApps/Parabolic/main/NickvisionTubeConverter.Shared/Docs/html/C/newDownload.html) hints that it may use yt-dlp. If so, I'd just go with MPV and/or yt-dllp instead. If you install MPV from the .deb file, you'll get yt-dlp along with it. I would advise installing yt-dlp into your ~/bin folder so you can set a crontab task to update it every day (yt-dlp -U). Distro repos don't keep stuff up to date well enough. yt.dlp needs to be up to date in order to continue working.

curl -L https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/releases/latest/download/yt-dlp -o ~/bin/yt-dlp
chmod 755 ~/bin/yt-dlp

MPV is a media player that can use yt-dlp to stream YouTube videos without using a web browser at all. mpv --volume=30 --volume-max=200 --player-operation-mode=pseudo-gui -- <YouTube URL>

MPV fails on some YouTube videos that yt-dllp, used alone, can download.

The GPL Summarized

by me from a recent comment of mine.

OK. If you insist on copyright, I’ll use my legal privileges granted by copyright law to prevent the use of almost all of those privileges by me or anyone else. I’ll only insist that my work must be attributed to me, and that my work, even if mixed in with the work of others, must always be distributed under exactly the same terms that I distributed it.

Two of the privileges included in "almost all" are the exclusive privilege of creating and distributing verbatim copies of my work, and the exclusive privilege of creating and distributing derivative works derived from my work. Of course, "my work," if that work is software compiled from source code, refers primarily to the source code, but also to the compiled object code.

Is it time for GPL, version 4?

GPL v. 3 added language to deal with TiVoization and DRM. Now we need language to stop what Red Hat is doing.

Frankly, as I read the license, anyone who has a copy of the source code of a project released under the GPL can share it with others. The license never says that you have to obtain the source or object code from the developer in order to share it and modify it.

I've gathered various ideas for software applications for well-being, and put them here:

https://codeberg.org/fswb/pages/wiki/Application-ideas

Most if not all of the ideas are inspired by Buddhism

Do you have other ideas? Maybe one of the ideas listed can be improved? Are you interested in working on one of these ideas?

When did Apple start to become evil?

Earlier than I thought.

Thanks to Cory for cluing me in.

https://archive.org/details/AppleSSAFEProject

From "Vadermeer":\
\
Yesterday at the Seattle Goodwill Outlet, where everything is sold by the pound, I noticed the Apple logo on letterhead sticking out from a bin of books, so I started digging. What I found were the 1979-1980 files of Jack MacDonald, manager of system software for the Apple II and /// at the time. They tell the story of project "SSAFE" or "Software Security from Apples Friends and Enemies." This was a proposal to bring disk copy protection in-house to sell as a service to outside developers. Inter-office memos, meeting notes and progress reports all give a good idea of what a project lifecycle was like. Different schemes and levels of protection are considered, as well as implementation primarily on the Apple II+ and the upcoming SARA (The Apple ///) and Lisa computers. Randy Wigginton is featured prominently throughout, along with mentions of Woz and many other familiar names.\
\
The documents were all a jumble so I've put them in chronological order and scanned the collection, please enjoy.

Here's a direct link to the PDF. https://archive.org/download/AppleSSAFEProject/Apple%20SSAFE%20Project.pdf

Randy Wigginton was a name I was not familiar with.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randy_Wigginton

This article doesn't mention Wigginton's role in pushing DRM. That's what the PDF is all about. My Apple //e was the freest, most open computer I have ever owned, but while I was enjoying that, the powerful at Apple were already scheming to take all that away.

The Wigginton article connected to Michael Scott. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Scott_(Apple)

On February 25, 1981, the day known as "Black Wednesday" at the company, Scott personally fired forty Apple employees, including half of the Apple II team, in a belief that they were redundant. Later in the afternoon he assembled the remaining employees with a keg of beer and explained the firings by stating, "I used to say that when being CEO at Apple wasn't fun anymore, I'd quit. But now I've changed my mind — when it isn't fun any more, I'll fire people until it's fun again."\
\
Following this abrupt event, he was moved to vice chairman, a title with little power, and Mike Markkula, the man who had hired Scott, replaced him.\
\
Scott left Apple officially on July 10, 1981, stating in his resignation letter:

So I am having a new learning experience, something I've never done before. I quit, not resign to join a new company or retire for personal reasons ... This is not done for those who fear my opinions and style, but for the loyal ones who may be given false hope.\
Yours. Michael, Private Citizen

A series of documents discovered at a thrift store in Seattle examines Apple's mindset in the late '70s and early '80s as it shifted from a hobbyist company to one interested in gathering, and retaining business clients for its Apple II series of computers.

You have some bandwidth available on your server?

Run a Tor relay!

You think Tor is weak because there are so few relays the CIA can control most of them? Well... only you, server owners, can change that. Surprisingly, the Tor network stagnates at only 7,000 relays since 2015!

If you have a server (even a Raspberry Pi) with a correct bandwidth and a stable connection, consider running a Tor relay.

Tor FAQ on running a relay

Setup guide

Hosting a middle relay or a bridge is very simple and safe. You can easily limit the bandwidth used by Tor.
