#hemp

The thing about #hemp, as a plant, is that it's the same as tobacco in that it extracts heavy metals from the soil and deposits it in its fan-leaves, and we don't #smoke the fan-leaves, now do we? Food for thought! #memes

Dezeen Showroom: made from one of the world's most carbon-sequestering crops, the Hemp fabric by Camira is designed to showcase a rich variation in tone.

First launched in 2012, Camira's Hemp fabric is made from a blend of wool and hemp fibres, combined into a classic weave.

The hemp comes from a minimally psychoactive strain of cannabis sativa, grown in England and processed using environmentally conscious methods such as dew retting, which involves allowing dew and rain to break down the plant so its fibres can be extracted.

The crop itself is fast-growing and highly carbon-sequestering – it captures atmospheric carbon twice as effectively as forests, according to recent research by the Centre for Natural Material Innovation at Cambridge.

According to Camira, Hemp has grown into one of its "most iconic and loved" fabrics, and one whose merits have been proven as sustainability issues have come to the fore over the last decade.

"One of our proudest achievements, [Hemp] is one of the most eco-friendly fabrics on the market, providing incredible environmental benefits, and is also beautiful in its aesthetics," said Camira senior innovator Jodie Padgett.

You can get #cotton #bags pretty much everywhere. How did an environmental #solution become part of the #problem?

source: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/24/style/cotton-totes-climate-crisis.html

An organic cotton tote needs to be used 20,000 times to offset its overall impact of production, according to a 2018 study by the Ministry of Environment and Food of Denmark. That equates to daily use for 54 years — for just one bag.

...

It’s also associated with forced labor, thanks to revelations about the treatment of Uyghurs in #Xinjiang, #China, which produces 20 percent of the world’s cotton and supplies most Western fashion brands.

...

You can’t, for example, just put a #tote in a #compost bin: Maxine Bédat, a director at the New Standard Institute, a nonprofit focused on fashion and sustainability, said she has “yet to find a municipal compost that will accept textiles.”

...

Some brands are turning to other #textile solutions. The British designer Ally Capellino recently swapped cotton for #hemp, while Ms. Hindmarch introduced a new version of her original tote, this time made from recycled water bottles; Nordstrom also uses similar bags in its stores.
