Using the IKEA seed starter in a different way than it supposed to be used.

The unit has a special holder for small, round stonewool pieces that are both expensive and hard to get by.

Since I am only using the #Växer system to grow herbs, decided to test starting the seeds right in the #IKEA rectangular containers with vermiculite. This way, they can be placed inside the reservoir right after they are ready for the next phase.

Used only lettuce seeds in this batch. Because I want to grow them for winter when prices go up and items are shipped from far away. The previous attempt were not successful and resulted in bolted and bitter lettuce that only my birds liked them.

Will be posting about my progress as it goes. This is day 1 of the experience.

Desperately looking for the e level large IKEA Krydda system.

Feeling really stupid that I didn't buy them when people were selling those. The size is so much more suitable for growing vegetables and 3 levels is making it perfect for the little space I have by the entrance of the balcony.

Most people who bought it failed because the container is neither deep not big enough for that many planta, but with my DIY trick I have managed to grow lots of herbs in the smaller unit that has only 8 holes pee reservoir, compared to 15 on the big ones (minus one for the extra water feeding).

Dealing with an extremely small reservoir on the IKEA Krydda hydroponic is a challenge, but a simple solution using a 1L juice bottle, made a hole about 3Cm above the top, fill it with nutrients, put it upside down in one of the holes and the water stays at 3cm inside the reservoir all the time.

It is the cheapest and easiest solution, just need to paint it or cover it with aluminum foil to prevent algae growth. But it's not a big deal because this system is with an airpump and it's not Kratky any more.

One bottle per hydroponic unit and I don't need to worry any longer. Just checking out the bottle and make sure to fill it quickly after it's low.

PS. It's really hard to take picture of a hole!

3 lettuce heads with their roots from Lidl!

While I'm waiting for my lettuce to become big enough to eat, I bought another tricolor-lettuce from #Lidl today.

I'm going to clean up the roots, get rid of all the coco peat there and put them in my #IKEA #Krydda hydroponic unit.

Already cut some leaves for last night's sandwich. I'm sure these will thrive in my system and will have fresh lettuce for many days ahead of me.

Made a few items from scrap wood to put on top of my #IKEA #krydda units so I can place a few pots on top of it.

It's not pretty, but functioning. May sand it and paint it black to look good on top of the units and blend in.

Miss the wide windows of our rental place in south of Paris. It was great to grow everything in winter.

Here I have a window by the kitchen table and a balcony door that opens in whi h makes it hard to use.

Improvising and may even put 2 hydroponic units on top of each other to get 4 stages plus one on top.

Simple addition to IKEA krydda Hydroponic unit to keep the water available much longer.

One of the main flaws in the discontinued #IKEA #krydda system was the small size of the water reservoir for the plants.

Being forced to keep adding water almost twice a week was causing me a big headache, but with this simple solution. The water will always be available for the plants and I don't need to add new water more than once every 2 or 3 weeks.

Just need to make sure the bottle is well covered to prevent algae growth and the water level indicator on the unit is enough to show when the bottle is empty and water level too low.
