"Vibration and sound all modulate strain in fiber," Englund explained, adding that even deeply buried fibers react to vibrations and sound. FiberSense has figured out how to measure changes in a fiber and deduce what made them.

The company can therefore detect things like passing traffic with sufficient accuracy to determine the difference between a truck and a cyclist, speed of travel, and even what lane a vehicle used. Leaky pipes can also be sensed, as can the geotechnical profile of spoil beneath fibers. Backhoes and jackhammers are easy.

At sea, FiberSense can detect an anchor dragging behind a ship – which matters when those anchors are about to pass over a submarine cable (as recently happened off the Australian city of Perth, resulting in a cable cut, a subsequent outage, and the arrest of the errant ship's skipper).

This is not just a vision thing: FiberSense is already present in several Australian cities, plus London, Dublin, San Francisco, New York, and Singapore.

A new open source operating system for embedded systems: RT-Thread Smart is working to open source the world of IoT and edge computing

There's a growing demand for embedded operating systems, and it's best when the one you build upon is open source. The RT-Thread project's R&D team has spent three years of research and intensive development to arrive at the project's latest offering: RT-Thread Smart. A security vulnerability has been identified in software deployed across millions of internet-connected devices with audio and video functionality.
According to researchers at Nozomi Networks, the flaw could allow attackers to effectively turn smart devices - such as baby monitors, home security cameras or smart doorbells - into spying tools.

I imagine that each of these millions of devices would need new firmware. Shouldn't take long to fix...

The thing about Mastodon is it rose to making up the single largest constitution of the federation/fediverse in basically no time and out of (seemingly) nowhere. One would think it a minor pop culture phenomenon if they weren't careful.
The thing is, is that much like a CryptoKittie, I'm still yet to know a single person in the physical that actually uses Mastodon.
