Für diejenigen, die Android-Geräte betreiben, bei denen sie kein Custom ROM installieren können (oder wollen), hier zwei gnulinux.ch-Artikel, in denen es darum geht, wie auch ein Stock-Android ohne Root weitgehend datensparsam betrieben werden kann und wie Google-Apps und weitere Bloatware entfernt werden können:

Im ersten Teil der Artikelreihe "Datensparsames Android mit der Android Debug Bridge" beschreibt Matthias "den Versuch, unter Android durch Umbau mittels der Android Debug Bridge (ADB), ohne Root soweit wie möglich an das Datenschutzniveau besserer Android Custom ROMs heranzukommen. Es ist der erste Teil einer voraussichtlich dreiteiligen Serie. Im ersten Teil wird der Ansatz für ein aktuelles Samsung Android (Stock-ROM) mit Android 14 demonstriert." und zeigt "wie mit Hilfe der Android Debug Bridge (ADB) und weniger Apps zur Geräteadministration auch ein vorinstalliertes Stock-ROM mehr oder weniger datenschutzfreundlich umgebaut werden kann".

Google-Dienste sind in Shelter eingefrostet

Ergänzend dazu habe ich im Artikel "Google-Apps und weitere Bloatware loswerden mit dem Universal Android Debloater Next Generation" noch eins der Tools vorgestellt, mit dessen Hilfe Funktionen der "Android Debug Bridge" über ein grafisches Frontend genutzt werden. So können auf relativ einfachem Weg auf vergoogelten Androids Google-Apps und weitere Bloatware wie Hersteller- und Werbeapps entfernt werden.

[...] It is worth noting that much of the functionality of the Android OS3 is provided by so-called system apps. These are privileged pre-installed apps that the OS developer bundles with the OS. System apps cannot be deleted (they are installed on a protected read-only disk partition) and can be granted enhanced rights permissions not available to ordinary apps such as those that a user might install. It is common for Android to include pre-installed third-party system apps, i.e. apps not written by the OS developer. One example is the so- called #GApps package of #Google apps (which includes Google Play Services, Google Play store, Google Maps, Youtube etc). Other examples include pre-installed system apps from Microsoft, LinkedIn, Facebook and so on.
We intercept and analyse the data traffic sent by the Android OS, including by pre-installed system apps, in a range of scenarios [...]

Details of installed apps. Samsung, Xiaomi, Realme, Huawei, Heytap and Google collect details of the #apps installed on a handset. Although less worrisome than #tracking of user interactions with apps, the list of installed apps is potentially sensitive information since it can reveal user interests and traits, e.g. a muslim prayer app, an app for a gay magazine, a mental health app, a political news app. It also may well be unique to one handset, or a small number of handsets, and so act as a device #fingerprint (especially when combined with device hardware/system configuration data, which is also widely collected).

Begin dit jaar startte Waag Futurelab samen met partners met het Mobifree-project. De missie is even ambitieus als fundamenteel: Europese inwoners en organisaties voorzien van een grotere keuze in en toegang tot mensgerichte en ethische mobiele software. Danny Lämmerhirt leidt dit traject voor Waag. Hij legt uit waarom juist die mobiele software zo cruciaal is, hoe die nu wordt gedomineerd door twee grote spelers en waarom we moeten investeren in alternatieven.

In Mobifree wordt gesproken over het ‘mobiele ecosysteem’. Dat klinkt als iets heel groots. Wat moeten we hieronder verstaan? ‘Het mobiele ecosysteem is inderdaad een uitgebreide verzameling van samenwerkende onderdelen op je smartphone. Het gaat hierbij om zowel je apps, de telefoon zelf (hardware), het besturingssysteem, de verbindingen met de cloud, de firmware, de interfaces waardoor apps en andere code met elkaar communiceren, en alle datastromen tussen deze onderdelen. In Mobifree kijken we naar al deze lagen van het mobiele ecosysteem. Nu worden belangrijke delen van het systeem gecontroleerd door Apple en Google, wat leidt tot allerlei ongewenste afhankelijkheden en problemen. Ons doel is een alternatief te bieden.’ (...)

Elk mobiel ecosysteem is een combinatie van verschillende onderdelen: denk aan je besturingssysteem (iOS/Android), je apps (Whatsapp/Google Maps), je cloud-dienst (Drive/iCloud), je internetbrowser (Chrome/Safari) en je toestel (bijvoorbeeld Samsung of Huawei phones/iPhone). Google en Apple beheersen grote delen van deze stack. Dat is problematisch. Bij Waag werken we aan een ‘public stack’, gebaseerd op publieke-, in plaats van aandeelhoudersbelangen.’ (...)

Una imagen de la luna llena del día de hoy, apenas recortada y achicada para rellenar casi todo el tamaño de la imagen.</p><p>La luna tiene un color un poco cremoso, tal como se veía al aparecer en el horizonte sobre las cierras de la tierra de nuestros nietos.</p><p>mientras que el borde de la izquierda, del lado norte de la luna parece bien recortada, el lado sur parece algo borroso.
Una imagen de la luna mas o menos sacada en el mismo momento fuertemente editada con el programa GIMP en base a una imagen con mucha exposición a la luz al haber utilizada una exposición por mas tiempo.</p><p>En realidad el tamaño de la luna no se puede apreciar ya que la cantidad de luz agrando el centro blanco en un radio muy mayor al real. Una franja cremosa rodea a la misma, seguido por una zona obscura que termina desvaneciendo nuevamente hacia colores grises e incluso hacías las esquinas superiores de la imagen colores apenas azulados.</p><p>El horizonte es claramente delineado por las copas de arboles de eucaliptos adultos que generan un relieve negro contra un horizonte blanquecino.<br>Una especie de neblina blanca rodea el fondo negro de la mitad inferior de la imagen.</p><p>En su totalidad la imagen tiene un tinte algo surreal.
La imagen casi original de la imagen altamente modificado por el programa GIMP.</p><p>Se ve el horizonte de arboles de eucalipto de la cierra de la tierra de nuestros nietos con la luna en su tamaño real. Las copas de los arboles parecen recortados con claridad contra el horizonte iluminado por la luna con un cierto resplandor blanquecino. La mitad inferior de la imagen es negro escuro no mas mientras que todo el cielo visible desvanece hacia grises oscuros hacia los bordes de la parte superior de la imagen.</p><p>La propia luna de color cremoso de la imagen inicial de esta publicación fue recortada e insertada en el lugar original y del tamaño original de la luna en esta imagen para que se pueda apreciar su color cremoso visible real en su momento a la textura de la propia luna por sus valles y cráteres.

Samsung Health can now help you never skip your meds

It does look pretty much like I remember Apple Health’s medication reminders, but sometimes Apple does come up first with good ideas.

Coming to the US this week, it lets you set reminders for your meds and even get a nudge when it’s time to hit up your healthcare provider for refills, according to the company’s press release.

The new feature allows you to log details like dosage and when you take those pills in Samsung Health. When you add a new medication to the app, you can note down the pill’s shape and colour to avoid any mix-ups.

I have to say, though, that Samsung’s Health app is getting pretty comprehensive. I already love the sleep stats I get, and I’m managing to get all my exercise data from my Polar H10 chest strap to also sync into the app.

Samsung expands repair program to more devices, now in 43 countries (87 to go)

Samsung’s repair program is currently active in the US, South Korea, Brazil, Mexico, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and the UK. Samsung now says it’s expanding the repair program to 30 additional companies, with the full list being: “Albania, Andorra, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Kosovo, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Switzerland.” Forty-three countries is a huge progression in just a year, but the flagship S23 is sold in 130 countries if Samsung wants complete coverage.

Really odd that batteries are not mentioned for Galaxy phones as a replaceable part… But it is good to see this program expanding to so many more countries. It also seems a bit unclear who the actual partners are in the different countries. So, clearly communication could be a bit better.
