Ukraine's Zelenskiy Signs Law Banning Import of #Books From #Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy signed into law a ban on the commercial import of books from Russia on Thursday, the latest move to reduce cultural ties between the two countries following Moscow's invasion.

"I believe the law is right," Zelenskiy wrote on the #Telegram messaging app, announcing he had signed a bill which also bans the commercial import of books printed in #Belarus or in occupied Ukrainian territory.

The bill, adopted by parliament a year ago, also makes its a requirement to obtain special permission to import books in the Russian language from third countries.

#Kiev’s Culture Minister Oleksandr #Tkachenko praised #Zelensky for approving the ban. “The adoption of this draft law will protect the Ukrainian book publishing and distribution sector from the destructive influence of the ‘ #Russian world,’” he said.

Some thoughts on what is going on in Russia

"I realized a long time ago that the Russian Federation is now going through the same situation that Ukraine was in 2014. There was an army on paper and at parades, but when the war began it became clear that it was not there. We needed to do something. And volunteers began to show up - volunteers are enterprising people. Every asshole has his own volunteer batallion. At first they were helpful. Then, predictably, they began to become impudent and grumpy.
How many times did Yarosh [leader of Right Sector] threaten to send battalions to Kyiv? I wrote it down, then I lost count. I remember how the Speaker of the Rada was surrounded by militants. I remember the number of gangs fighting the enemy at varying degrees of distance from the front. I remember when the police shot at each other in Knyazhichi. I remember the massacre of Right Sector members by cops in Mukachevo. And after it, I remember the recording of a battalion commander against the background of machine gunners in the forest. There was a lot. Ukraine passed this stage in 2014-2018.

THIS STAGE IS JUST BEGINNING IN THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION.

While no one was paying attention, last month the #Kiev gang #sold #Ukraine to $8.5 trillion-worth #BlackRock. Just like that. The deal was sealed between the Government of Ukraine and BlackRock’s VP Philipp Hildebrand.

Meanwhile, away from the battlefield, the #Russians are very much aware of the frantic geoeconomic activity.

It’s fascinating to see how these patriotic/independent #journalists are now playing a role similar to the former political commissars in the USSR, all of them, in their own way, deeply committed to guiding Russian society towards draining the swamp, slowly but surely.

It’s clear Putin not only understands their role but sometimes, “shock to the system-style”, the system he presides actually implements the journalists’ suggestions. As a foreign correspondent working all over the world for nearly 40 years now, I have been quite impressed by the way Russian journalists may enjoy a degree of #freedom unimaginable in most latitudes of the collective West.

Conclusion? - Il nous faudra dénazifier jusqu'à Washington!

A Group of African Officials, including the South African President, the Egyptian Prime Minister, and other officials from several African countries, have arrived in Kiev to meet with Zelensky and discuss possible settlements for peace.

Ukrainian President Zelensky tells African leaders that peace talks with Russia are not possible "before it withdraws from occupied lands"

South African President Ramaphosa to Zelensky: We are here in Ukraine to share the African vision of peace, We will talk to my Russian counterpart about the need to respect the Charter of the #UnitedNations. African countries are ready to engage in further talks on the Ukraine peace treaty.

President of Zambia: It is important for the African continent to contribute to the #peace process in #Ukraine

But #Zelenskiy says he does not understand logic of decision by African leaders to visit #Russia after talks in #Kiev.

Two conflicting #narratives of the #Ukrainian crisis have been a major factor in preventing its resolution. One, promoted by Washington and the #US-backed government in #Kiev, blames only “aggression” by the Kremlin and specifically by Russian President #Putin. The other, promoted by #Moscow and rebel forces in eastern Ukraine, which it supports, blames “aggression” by the European Union and $NATO, both inspired by #Washington. Cohen sees enough bad intent, misconceptions, and misperceptions to go around, but on balance thinks Moscow’s narrative, almost entirely deleted from US mass media, is closer to the historical realities of 2013–2014:

2 days ago Russians claimed that they had destroyed 2 more American Patriot missile systems in Kiev, which Ukraine forces denied as propaganda.

This morning the Russian friendly Telegram channel posted 2 surveillance videos from a location marked as Kiev on the videos showing when multiple surface to air missiles were launched from 2 places and moments later, one was hit by a missile causing it to explode, followed by multiple rocket explosions to different parts of the city.

There is no way of authenticating the videos but if they are not fake, this is the first proof of Russian use of cheap Geran 2 drones to activate and locate air defense systems before taking them out with Radar detecting long distance missiles. And also the first visual proof of destruction of an air defense system by the Russian forces in Kiev.

So far, Russia has claimed that they have destroyed 4 Patriot air defense systems in Kiev something that western and Ukraine sources have denied, except one article admitting that "one Patriot system was damaged" during a previous Russian attack.

Russia attacked #Kiev with Geran-2 dronesaat nigh, in what seems to be the largest number of drones used during a single operation.

The Russian sources say they send 32 drones towards Ukraine's capital, Kiev. First Ukraine said they intercepted 20 drones, but now they say Russia sent 54 drones and Ukrainian forces intercepted 52 of those.

Eyewitness reports mentioned at least 10 explosions on the ground at various locations in Kiev.

I guess this is just another example of lies and miss information about this war and we may never know the real number.

Pa. Maybe someone in Ukraine is stealing the anti aircraft missiles and using this to hide their theft, like Iran's IRGC did back in mid 80s with SCUD missiles.

Another massive explosion was reported in zkiev today.

The video shows the primary explosion by the missile, followed by multiple explosions after that and a massive black smoke and fire somewhere in Kiev.

There are no reports of the type of the target or what caused the secondary explosions, either an amonition depot or fuel storage.

Ukraine government is asking citizens not to record the explosions and fires caused by Russian attacks.

They say that the recordings helps Russia to verify and identify new targets.

At the same time, the spokesman of Russian armed forces sarcastically said that the number of missiles "Kiev regime" is claiming to have intercepted, are much more than those we launched (successfully) at the city".

Preparing for Defeat

#ClownWorld’s pet politicians and intellectuals are beginning to change the #Narrative and prepare the public for its inevitable #defeat in #Ukraine.

The conflict between #Russia and Ukraine may not end in victory for #Kiev, and its Western backers should prepare for such an outcome, Czech President Petr Pavel has told The Guardian newspaper.

“I think we should do anything… at our disposal to encourage Ukrainians and to support them to be successful. But internally, we should also be ready for other contingencies,” said Pavel, who was in London for the coronation of King Charles III.

A lot will depend on the outcome of Ukraine’s planned spring counteroffensive, explained the Czech leader, who has a background in intelligence and served as chairman of the #NATO Military Committee between 2015 and 2018.

The outcome is not in doubt. While the game still needs to be played out, the Russians are as confident of victory now as they were in 1943, when Stalin, post-Tehran, commented: “Roosevelt has given me his firm word to open extensive actions in France in 1944. I think he will keep his word. And if he doesn’t keep his word, we are strong enough to crush Hitler and Germany on our own.”

Notice that Clown World strategist emeritus, who was among the first clowns to recognize that the neoliberal world order was in decline back in 2014, is now openly predicting a negotiated settlement brokered by the Chinese.

Former US Secretary of State #HenryKissinger has told CBS News that the conflict in Ukraine may be approaching a turning point, and that Chinese-brokered peace talks could begin by the end of 2023.

“Now that #China has entered the #negotiation, it will come to a head, I think by the end of the year,” the 99-year-old diplomat told CBS in an interview broadcast on Sunday. By that time, he continued, “we will be talking about negotiating processes and even actual negotiations.”

Kissinger drew the ire of Kiev last year when he suggested that Ukraine should accept a return to the “status quo ante,” or relinquish its territorial claims to #Crimea and grant autonomy to the #Donetsk and #Lugansk People’s Republics, in the name of peace. He has since suggested that these territories become the basis of negotiations after a ceasefire and Russian withdrawal.

I have no doubt that #Kissinger is sending a signal to #Putin that Clown World is finally willing to compromise, but I am dubious that the Russians – or the Chinese – will be short-sighted enough to settle for what is on offer, given that it is already within their grasp. Putin has openly stated that the Russian objective is not merely the #declowning of Ukraine, but of #Europe and the #West.

And there is no reason for China to encourage a settlement on the Ukraine front when peace there would permit the military forces of Clown World to concentrate on #Taiwan. Which is why I anticipate, to the contrary, the opening of a third front somewhere else in the world, most likely either a) the #MiddleEast or b) #Africa.

UPDATE: Meanwhile, the clowns in the EU are just digging themselves in deeper:

The #EuropeanUnion is seeking to tighten its economic screws on Russia by sanctioning Chinese companies that conduct #trade with #Moscow, the Financial Times reported on Sunday.

They’ve clearly learned absolutely nothing from the way their anti-Russian sanctions boomeranged on them. And now they’re encouraging the biggest manufacturing country on the planet to remove itself from the shrinking “global” economy.

Watching Clown World try to throw its nonexistent weight around is disturbingly like seeing an obese 50-year-old former cheerleader strutting around in a miniskirt still thinking she’s hot.

Biden’s team fears the aftermath of a failed Ukrainian counteroffensive

🔵 Those concerns recently spilled out into the open during a leak of classified information onto social media. A top secret assessment from early February stated that Ukraine would fall “well short” of its counteroffensive goals. More current American assessments are that Ukraine may make some progress in the south and east, but won’t be able to repeat last year’s success.

🔵 Ukraine has hoped to sever Russia’s land bridge to Crimea and U.S. officials are now skeptical that will happen, according to two administration officials familiar with the assessment. But there are still hopes in the Pentagon that Ukraine will hamper Russia’s supply lines there, even if a total victory over Russia’s newly fortified troops ends up too difficult to achieve.

🔵 Moreover, U.S. intelligence indicates that Ukraine simply does not have the ability to push Russian troops from where they were deeply entrenched — and a similar feeling has taken hold about the battlefield elsewhere in Ukraine, according to officials. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the U.S. hasn’t adequately armed his forces properly and so, until then, the counteroffensive can’t begin.

🔵 A counteroffensive that doesn’t meet expectations will also cause allies in foreign capitals to question how much more they can spare if Kyiv’s victory looks farther and farther away.

🔵 “European public support may wane over time as European energy and economic costs stay high,” said Clementine Starling, a director and fellow at the Atlantic Council think tank in Washington, D.C. “A fracturing of transatlantic support will likely hurt U.S. domestic support and Congress and the Biden administration may struggle to sustain it.”

🔵 “If Ukraine can’t gain dramatically on the battlefield, the question inevitably arises as to whether it is time for a negotiated stop to the fighting,” said Richard Haass, president of the Council on Foreign Relations. “It’s expensive, we’re running low on munitions, we’ve got other contingencies around the world to prepare for.”

🔵 The fighting has taken a toll on the Ukrainians as well. Fourteen months into the conflict, the Ukrainians have suffered staggering losses — around 100,000 dead — with many of their top soldiers either sidelined or exhausted. The troops have also gone through historic amounts of ammunition and weaponry, with even the West’s prodigious output unable to match Zelenskyy’s urgent requests.

🔵 U.S. officials have also briefed Ukraine on the dangers of overextending its ambitions and spreading its troops too thin — the same warning Biden gave then-Afghan President Ashraf Ghani as the Taliban moved to sweep across the country during the U.S. military withdrawal in 2021.

#Germany says Patriots delivered to #Kiev

The Patriot system is used to combat enemy aircraft, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. Meanwhile, #Ukraine says an overnight Russian #drone attack hit the southern port city of #Odesa.

The US and Germany each agreed to provide Kyiv with one of the systems. The Netherlands has also pledged to provide missiles and parts.

German press agency dpa cited a German military source as saying that Ukrainian soldiers received training by Germany and the US in a NATO country where joint drills were held.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has vowed to find an "antidote" to the air defense system.

Ukraine short of skilled troops and munitions as losses, pessimism grow

The quality of Ukraine’s military force, once considered a substantial advantage over Russia, has been degraded by a year of casualties that have taken many of the most experienced fighters off the battlefield, leading some Ukrainian officials to question Kyiv’s readiness to mount a much-anticipated spring offensive.

The situation on the battlefield now may not reflect a full picture of Ukraine’s forces, because Kyiv is training troops for the coming counteroffensive separately and deliberately holding them back from current fighting, including the defense of Bakhmut, a U.S. official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to be candi

On the front lines, however, the mood is dark.

Kupol, who consented to having his photograph taken and said he understood he could face personal blowback for giving a frank assessment, described going to battle with newly drafted soldiers who had never thrown a grenade, who readily abandoned their positions under fire and who lacked confidence in handling firearms.

His unit withdrew from Soledar in eastern Ukraine in the winter after being surrounded by Russian forces who later captured the city. Kupol recalled how hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers in units fighting alongside his battalion simply abandoned their positions, even as fighters for Russia’s Wagner mercenary group pressed ahead.

Ukraine has also faced an acute shortage of artillery shells, which Washington and its allies have scrambled to address, with discussions about how to shore up Ukrainian stocks dominating daily meetings on the war at the White House National Security Council. Washington’s efforts have kept Ukraine fighting, but use rates are very high, and scarcity persists.

Dmytro, a Ukrainian soldier whom The Post is identifying only by first name for security reasons, described many of the same conditions. Some of the less-experienced troops serving at his position with the 36th Marine Brigade in the Donetsk region “are afraid to leave the trenches,” he said. Shelling is so intense at times, he said, that one soldier will have a panic attack, then “others catch it.”

Meanwhile, a Russian offensive has been building since early January, according to Syrsky. Budanov, Ukraine’s military intelligence chief, told The Post last month that Russia had more than 325,000 soldiers in Ukraine, and another 150,000 mobilized troops could soon join the fight. Ukrainian soldiers report being outnumbered and having less ammunition.

Russia is also facing ammunition, manpower and motivation problems — and has notched only incremental gains in recent months despite the strained state of Ukraine’s force. As bad as Ukraine’s losses are, Russia’s are worse, the U.S. official said.

Despite reports of untrained mobilized Russian fighters being thrown into battle, Syrsky said those now arriving are well-prepared. “We have to live and fight in these realities,” he said. “Of course, it’s problematic for us. … It forces us to be more precise in our firing, more detailed in our reconnaissance, more careful in choosing our positions and more detailed in organizing the interaction between the units. There is no other way.”

Russia’s recent gains — notably around Bakhmut — have not significantly tilted the battlefield, and U.S. military officials have said that even if Russia seizes Bakhmut, it would be of little strategic importance. But given the heavy casualties Ukraine is suffering there, officials in Washington have questioned Kyiv’s refusal to retreat. The United States has been advising Ukraine to retreat from the city since at least January, the U.S. official said.
