A quotation from Tuchman, Barbara

Books are the carriers of civilization. Without books, history is silent, literature, dumb, science crippled, thought and speculation at a standstill. Without books, the development of civilization would have been impossible. The are engines of change (as the poet said), windows on the world, and lighthouses erected in the sea of time. They are companions, teachers, magicians, bankers of the treasures of the mind. Books are humanity in print.

Barbara W. Tuchman (1912-1989) American historian and author
“The Book,” Lecture, Library of Congress (1979-10-17)

Dumb and dumber

From what I have seen since I started using computers (KC85/3, Z1013, ZX Spectrum, C-64...) in the 1980s, computer users have been dumbed down to computer consumers since about 1995, when Microsoft published Windows 95 with promises of everything being "really easy" and the assurance (at least in some areas of this planet) that you "don't really need to learn" anything.

About 30 years later most people write in their resumes/job application: "IT skills: Word, Excel, Photoshop". It does not matter the least whether those people know anything about text processing, spreadsheet calculations or photo retouching. Important is that they think they can operate that software and that it is the only software they can use to do a certain job, so either they or their employer needs to buy/rent it.

People who actually understand text processing, spreadsheets etc can also use other, often better software, but that would be bad for business. So even schools and universities stopped teaching principles and have degraded themselves to drug dealers, offering pupils/students their first fix, to make sure they won't go elsewhere.

If you think it can't be that bad, about 20 years ago a faculty in a technical college complained to our network group (who was also responsible for all computer classrooms), that we hadn't installed SPSS. She wanted to teach SPSS and couldn't find it on her computer in that room. The colleague had installed it of course. But he had cleaned the desktop of all but the basic icons, as we always did. She couldn't find her software, because its icon was not on the desktop. Yes, she was teaching.

But why do I bring this up now? Because I think that the "AI market" will have to employ the same methods to make profits. "Hey, look what can be achieved with a few words/clicks! No need to learn all that stuff! Everyone is a superman now!"

I was reminded how bad it already is when I came across this article explaining how to use NotebookLM (apparently the latest and the greatest from Google) to create study guides (seriously? Something with text???) from a YouTube video. Look at the steps necessary. Oh, the challenge! And this will very likely get worse...

How to Create YouTube Video Study Guides with NotebookLM - KDnuggets https://www.kdnuggets.com/how-to-create-youtube-video-study-guides-with-notebooklm

Add Your YouTube Video
First, pick the video you want to make a study guide for. After you pick the video, you need to add it to NotebookLM. Here’s how to do it:
Log into your NotebookLM account and start a new project
In the upload field, choose YouTube as the source of your data
Copy and paste the YouTube video URL into the field
NotebookLM will automatically retrieve the video transcript for analysis
Generating the Study Guide
Once the transcript is uploaded, NotebookLM creates helpful study materials for you.

'If we teach a child to read but fail to develop a desire to read, we will have created a skilled non-reader, a literate illiterate. -- – And no high test score will ever undo that damage.' – *Credit to Kylene Beers

If the literate illiteracy looks in the mirror, it sees a lot of industrialized produced text, called "content", which is not beautiful, not intellectually appealing, formal, formulated redundantly and lightyears away from any kind of relevance for a human's life. Together with manipulative political and ideological texts, extending to scientific publications, which extinguishes the last traces of desire.

Cape Town City libraries use technology to draw young patrons to the bookshelves: Read something, before you can use a tablet

Child holding a tablet, with a game being played on the screen. In the background is a red plastic table with various books on it.
Waiting times have increased due to the tablets’ overwhelming popularity, prompting the library staff to devise a creative solution. Those waiting their turn must read to a staff member before being allowed to use the tablets. This approach has produced remarkable results, with many young students improving their reading skills and gaining newfound confidence.

Gaming sessions are limited to Fridays, Saturdays and school holidays. To secure a slot, children are encouraged to borrow books, read them and then provide a brief review to the librarians, either written or spoken.

Simple, but brilliant! It’s a win-win as the kids get something they’ll enjoy, and at the same time their literacy skills improve. These literacy skills are what will make a massive difference to their school learning, as well as their ability to get jobs one day. Gaming itself will undoubtedly also teach them skills, but literacy trumps all. As an added bonus, they also learn that effort equals reward.

The rollout of this initiative began the previous year with the distribution of 66 tablets to 13 libraries. In 2023, the endeavour has expanded further, with 99 tablets allocated to 19 libraries, and this momentum is expected to persist throughout the year. I hope that more such tablets can be rolled out to additional libraries.

Librarians are not just people who sit behind a counter and stamp books out or charge fines for overdue books. I’ve always found them very helpful (taking you top something instead of just pointing in the distance), and what they do, is more than just about books. Libraries often have computer and Internet facilities, meeting spaces, and more. Many communities really underestimate the importance of libraries, especially to younger children who have a thirst for knowledge. One of the most precious gifts a child can get, is good reading and literacy skills. There is so much knowledge (and entertainment) that is available free of cost at libraries. Reading can inform, relax, motivate, and entertain.

#SelenaGomez and #HaileyBieber: A Complete Timeline of Their #TikTok #Drama

Source: https://www.glamour.com/story/selena-gomez-and-hailey-bieber-a-complete-timeline-of-their-tiktok-drama

However, the drama between Hailey Bieber and Selena Gomez reached a boiling point in February 2023 when #KylieJenner seemingly joined the fray. Here’s a complete timeline of what went down on TikTok—and everything that came next.

...

According to BuzzFeed, Hailey Beiber has lost around 1 million followers since the TikTok drama began. Meanwhile, Elle.com reports that Gomez gained 10.5 million followers on #Instagram and Jenner has lost around 500,000 #followers.

First of all congratulations if you have no TikTok & #Instagram and never heard about the drama.

The rest urgently need lessons in more #media #literacy. On the one hand, you make yourself a #bully if you bully supposedly other bullies, and on the other hand, it's not healthy if you devote yourself to every nuance of your stars as a hobby psychologist and interpret them.

iSinkwe app, developed by CSIR in South Africa, can help children with their reading and listening skills in all 11 official SA languages

Bild/Foto
The app, called iSinkwe – the isiZulu word for a bushbaby – adds and synchronises human-narrated or computer-generated audio to text. It aims to make textbooks, class notes and other documents more accessible to learners by making reading and learning more interactive.

iSinkwe functions by adding audio, which can be recorded manually by someone or generated by a computer using a standard Electronic Publication Version Three (EPUB3) document, to text documents.

There is already an Android app, with an iOS app and a Windows store app still to follow.
