We’re home for a while, enjoying the lengthening days. One thing about living at 53°N is the days are noticeably longer quite soon after the solstice.

I’ve been watching YouTube shorts and @kallmekris has made some that made me laugh. One in particular – types of people before an appointment – really resonated so I’m asking. I am one of the frozen type so I try to make my appointments as early as I’m comfortable getting up plus 2 hours.

When do you start waiting around to go to an appointment?

Welcome to #CheckIn for Sunday, January 7, 2024. More Taiwan and China on the menu today. Not so much the nation states, more the audio menu and talk about cuisines. Another nommsy detail is the is the dumpling emoji, which became available to smartphones and such only a couple years ago. Talk about uniting people with chef's specialties! 🥟 🥢 🥣

So I came across the Sinica Podcast: Fuchsia Dunlop, a chef with a unique education and career talks about the eight regional cuisines in China. Audio can be had here. Did you know all of these? I didn't.

I am fortunate to live in a city with a very good availability of most of these, and also the modern-ish blends that have developed on Taiwan - which in turn has its own goodness to offer. In comparison I can only dabble in vaguely Chinese cooking, despite having more than two decades of growing familiarity. To keep on learning is what I'll keep up in 2024.

Another thing, restaurants with Chinese cuisines here have long stopped to theme along Golden Dragons or similar. And most have stopped calling themselves "Chinese" but do differentiate along regional lines for many years now. What is that like where you are? For comparison, my Taiwanese MIL cooks fantastic things as well as down to earth dishes, such as these:

Photography month is one thing, a full year of advancing one's skills at one's own pace another. As it goes, a matching challenge crossed my path around the year's end. And I kinda like the idea to take pictures in a more.. focused way. First week, which is almost over by today and when you read this, had #trees as the topic. Here's where it comes from, https://norberteder.photography/52-wochen-foto-challenge-2024/ (translate page at your leisure; I have the topics for you in this post's image).

By accident I found the hashtag and the #52wochenfotochallenge given that photography was quite a thing for me back when it was (teenage years). So many factors.. time, mobility, experimental spirit, some experience and knowledge beyond the shutter is helpful.

The place to post results, I'd suggest, is a pixelfed. Works like a fedi-fied Instagram, if the comparison means anything at all, without the nasty. Mastodon is fine too! Tag your contribution, someone will find it.

There's pixelfed instances everywhere, and the fedi integration works rather well. Whatever you decide to do, following the hashtag #52wfc24 or the original idea by https://graz.social/@norberteder could be inspiring. What do you think? Thinking where that old camera is? I for one would think shooting for this on film would be a radical idea. I'll sure take the digital path.

Most of us know one another from a diaspora pod long gone, and once were #newhere too. #TGIF is a thing, like dance movies or not. But then I know one of my first posts ever had this photo of an ancient, early bronze age era disc depicting a particular piece of the heavens. The size is about 32 cm across, it is made of hammered bronze and gold.

While that disc may have been crafted as a tool to read the seasons more than l'art pour l'art, I am impressed too by the enormity of knowledge contained in it. Talk about "I had no idea people 4000 years ago knew this".

Or don't. Topic is open as always! What is an impressive piece of craft or art, old or new, with a practical purpose or not, that you have seen or experienced with your own eyes?

Hello World 😀

I am #newhere and I am interested in scripting, memes, free software, hacking, darknet, entertainment, gaming, file sharing, climate protection and hacktivism.

#Newhere, not #newhere, just followed the latest trend among the elderly and shuffled in my slippers over to #Friendica. Found a fine server indeed, the name has a familiar ring to it, reminds of a group of illnesses one shouldn't catch.

All my contacts on D* are invited to add me, I will relentlessly add you back - and I'll be coming after you in case you don't.

I'm not certain what to do with the two accounts, whether to abandon D* and switch completely to F, of whether I'll invent a completely new personality for one of them and make you guess who's talking. However, D* has become a little stale of late - albeit with a somewhat elitist touch, which then again is one reason why I like it there. After all, one doesn't mingle with every Tom, Dick, and Harry, now does one? See the dilemma?

Whatever, I shall have to see.

Hello! Hey, how lucky I am that my week to host bridges the last days of the year and the first few of the New Year!

Don’t know about you, I thought my holiday period was going to be relatively quiet but not so… I haven’t had time to recover yet and my last visitor for the season is arriving tomorrow. I’m not complaining… after the isolation during the pandemic it’s been exciting enjoying the company of family and friends in person. In fact, although the traditions are far more simple we’re having more fun doing stuff together - a favourite for all age groups is a large Jenga set a pal made me for Christmas. Group (obsessive) jigsaw puzzling was another activity that kept a number awake till the wee hours. What was interesting is that the play activities were new to most who indulged in them! 😂😂😂

Almost a Month on Diaspora now. Changing the way I use it.

It does take some time to learn how to use #Diaspora, and that's because Diaspora doesn't tell you how you're supposed to use it. You make it do what you want it to. And #tutorials are easy to find and use. That is not only very unusual for a social media platform, but it's also totally cool! Build your own, the way you like it! Building your own the way you like it takes time, though, and I think a lot of people are just in a hurry and not willing to take the time. So here are a few lessons learned in my first month on Diaspora:

1. Social media doesn't reflect how most people actually think and feel. It's a place where the people who make the most noise get all the attention. Most people aren't even on social media, and kids my age aren't on anything like Diaspora, and not many even on #Facebook anymore. It's all 10-second videos on TikTok or Snapchat, and 99.99999 percent of it is just "look at me, ain't I cute."

2. It's okay to use the #Ignore button, even though it seems bad to do need it. It's probably true that some people have blocked me too. I got really mad at some Diaspora people (do we call our selves "Diasporians" or something?) who said I was intolerant, bigoted, whatever because I don't accept and celebrate things that I think are bad. I blocked them, and they blocked me, probably. But that makes my experience - and theirs too I guess - better and just more enjoyable, by getting stuff that makes you angry out of your feed. Also, I got a PM from a stranger with no profile, just a picture. Not even a single post. But he/she/they says they want to do everything just in private chat. I think that's inappropriate with a kid and it's creepy. So the Ignore button is also maybe a safety thing.

3. #Markdown language is really cool! I could never do that on Facebook, but here I can #format my posts and even comments with italics, bold, strikethrough, all kinds of cool stuff! It's just fun, and it makes my posts look nicer. I found an easy cheat sheet here that I use a lot.

4. Do the #profile thing, please! When I get a private message or want to see what someone is about, more often than not all I see is a blank page with maybe an avatar and nothing else. It's probably a better experience for everyone if we all do our profiles so we get some idea of what people are into.

Again: It is worth taking the time to "build your own" social media experience. So if you are #newhere, just know that building your own is well worth the time, you'll meet some great people and we can all learn from each other.

Today is my brother's birthday (Happy b-day, dude!). He's 12 yrs younger than I am. After he got to be about a week old, we held his bris. Then, after all THAT hullabaloo, my dad took me to NYC for the first time. His idea was to give mom her first quiet day in quite a while.

He had no idea he was sparking off a lifelong love affair.

You may notice this is coming from a new spot in the Fediverse. The Friendica server we had been using for this became unreliable; hopefully this one is better. We're trying to keep this transition as seamless as possible, so if you notice any issues, please advise.

Meanwhile, I pre-scheduled this post because I am in a two-day "bootcamp" style training to prepare for a certification exam in Risk Management. Yes, even at my advanced age, I am happy to pick up a new discipline and a new cert. Are you into this kind of formal training? Diaspora is Easy to use but it Takes Time

Looking for a place to make a #blog that doesn't require payment or ads, and getting away from #Facebook, I found out about the #Fediverse. What a busy place! What a lot of platforms to choose from! It was all very confusing and you can't really tell any difference between some of the platforms. At least you can distinguish between #microblogging and #macroblogging, which I didn't know about before. I had no idea if I was supposed to choose only one or not, either.

I was about to either give up or just pick one at random when I found one article online that describes #Diaspora as the easiest for new people to learn and use, with a simple interface and not so loaded down with special features and shiny gadgets that most people probably don't even use. So I chose a Diaspora pod from a map and so far,

I love it!

It is easy to use and I've already made some friends even though I'm pretty #newhere. The user interface is nice and simple. This looks like a good place to make my first blog. I just wanted to say #thanks to all the people who make Diaspora and thanks to the people who run pods and make it possible for the rest of us.
