There’s a problem with Opera. No, not that kind of opera. The Oracle kind. Oracle OPERA is a Property Management Solution (PMS) that is in use in a bunch of big-name hotels around the world. The PMS is the system that handles reservations and check-ins, talks to the phone system to put room extensions in the proper state, and generally runs the back-end of the property. It’s old code, and handles a bunch of tasks. And researchers at Assetnote found a serious vulnerability. CVE-2023-21932 is an arbitrary file upload issue, and rates at least a 7.2 CVSS.

Ah mais qu'est-ce qu'ils peuvent me gonfler à écouter que de la variété des années 70, à côté : Cloclo, Mike Brandt, Frédéric François, Joe Dassin, ... Et en boucle, jamais rien d'autre. Je suis vraiment maudit. Ils vont m'achever. Vivement que mes enceintes arrivent. Je vais te les rééduquer avec du Baroque, de l'Opéra, du Kraftwerk, Dead Can Dance, les Dots... tout ça. Et si ils sont pas sages, ils auront même droit à du Christian Death, du Hendrix, de l'expérimental électronique et même du free-jazz. Rha la la !
Mais qu'est ce que j'ai bien pu faire pour mériter tout ça ?
Bon, en attendant, une douceur aux antipodes de leurs chansonnettes à l'eau de rose de mar-de.

Vienna Opera House at Night

Vienna Opera House (Wiener Staatsoper)

Always a hub of activity in the center of Vienna, passersby are often treated to free samples from opera musicians and/or street performers. In late summer 2022 the performance schedule had just begun to bring back live concerts (post-pandemic) but even as the first shows were announced, the music took to the streets.

A very short clip, the music indistinct, with a pan around that spot so you can see a bit of the Kärntner Ring (circling the city center) and Hotel Sacher, home of THE Sacher torte. Mm.

Mỹ Lai by Kronos Quartet, Rinde Eckert, Vân-Ánh Vanessa Võ

  • On March 16, 1968, the United States Army killed over 500 unarmed civilians in the hamlet of Mỹ Lai, Vietnam. The unimaginable brutality of the event impacted all those who witnessed it firsthand, including helicopter pilot Hugh Thompson, who, against orders, intervened to save Vietnamese lives. Thompson’s story is the basis of the opera Mỹ Lai, composed by Jonathan Berger (music) and Harriet Scott Chessman (libretto) for Kronos Quartet, Vietnamese multi-instrumentalist Vân-Ánh Vanessa Võ, and vocalist Rinde Eckert. This definitive recording of Mỹ Lai captures the visceral, phantasmal depictions of Thompson’s grief, horror, and guilt as he is haunted by persistent memories of that cataclysmic day, half a world and nearly four decades away. Tense and unforgiving, Mỹ Lai is “a gripping affair, beginning to end” (New York Times). Presented here alongside recollections by Vietnamese survivor Trần Văn Đức, it is a memorial to all the Mỹ Lai villagers killed on that grim day.
