There are at least two clear reasons why #Vienna is so often voted one of the most liveable cities in the world:

  1. the defining logic of the city is: 'is this good for children' in stead of 'is this good for property developers'?

  2. When awarding planning permission Vienna's planners requires 50% 'affordable housing' in all new urban developments, not the much lower ratios elsewhere.

Our #housingcrisis & our #socialhousing might look different with such ideas in place.

Austrian police say they foiled a planned attack on Vienna's Pride parade

Austrian authorities said Sunday they had foiled a possible attack on Vienna's Pride parade by three young men who had allegedly sympathized with the extremist Islamic State group.

The head of Austria's domestic intelligence service told reporters that the suspects, aged 14, 17 and 20, were arrested before the start of Saturday's Pride parade, which was attended by around 300,000 people, public broadcaster ORF reported.
...
The three suspects, Austrian citizens of Bosnian and Chechen origin whose identities were not further revealed, had radicalized online and sympathized with the Islamic State group
...
The trio was arrested before the start of the parade by Austria's Cobra special forces.

I have a new interpretation of how "Rosebud" may become one's last words.... _in a good way (?)_

Pastry

OMG... Mm. One of each please, and... ack! Rosebud...
This may have killed me (softly) if I ate too much of this... but it sure is pretty! 📷

Oh, and zero calories as delivered online.

Finally I have made a little space in my computer after un-corrupting 20 yrs of data. 😱 So now I am finally seeing some photos from Europe, UK, and Florida on a big screen, having weeded out 20 years of digital videos, corrupt (MS!) databases, And -

I've been enjoying many wonderful photos from peoples' walks in cities and nature, and creativity at home with the option to leave ... 👍

Some sweets? So, I looked further, a few months earlier, at my pastries above, from basic pumpkin pie (holiday time) and a cannoli and key lime pie (with the proof) at 6:00. Holidays are over and it's New Year, one of my resolutions being to maintain some healthy aspects of my time in Vienna and UK - walking (not optional! but I do that in the city and swamp anyway), but more grain and fruit, and not so much fatty, (hydrogenated?!) cake and bread which many Americans enjoy. So... "Context and Perspective".

Pt. 2
#ContextAndPerspective

Viennese Pastry

#ViennesePastry - @ Gerstner's, Vienna

I will say, American cakes of the chocolate &/or frosted sort can looks nice and make you gasp - it uses a lot of butter and cream, and natural flavors (like Key Lime in Florida, where it's illegal to be 'woke'.) Mm, but as rich and creamy and delicious and soft as American cake may be, especially our "layer cake" - It is not as impressive or artful as pastries of Europe that I have seen &/or tasted - in Austria, France, NL, Italy mostly. But the cakes in the middle (top photo which was Florida) are delicious (I'm told), very rich in chocolate, or maybe orange . At 5:00 is a cannoli and verifiable key lime pie. And at 7:00, with the name "Rosebud" (covered, and a reference to "Citizen Cane" - its essence and end) is American standards, like basic pumpkin pie at holiday time. I had one of them and was full for... a while. Reformed now.

Since I took these photos, my New Year's effort has been: keeping some of my favorite healthy habits of Europe (e.g., muesli, oats, fruit, walking) while avoiding... #pastries

Happy Sunday Funday.

The church on St. George's Hill on the edge of the Vienna Woods was built between 1974 and 1976 to a design by Austrian sculptor Fritz Wotruba (1907- 1975).

Ihre Außenwände bestehen aus 152 unregelmäßig aufgeschichteten kubischen Einzelblöcken aus Beton (Gesamtgewicht über 4000 t).
Its outer walls consist of 152 irregularly stacked cubic individual concrete blocks (total weight over 4000 t).

I can't remember if I already posted it years ago, I only mention because this church has some of the best acoustics I know, even better than famous French or Austrian cathedrals.

"Luminous Liberty Bell", Philadelphia, PA

As I do love bells, here's the 80-foot (24m) tall "Luminous Liberty Bell" spanning Broad Street (at Johnson St), Philadelphia, PA, built in 47 days by Frank C. English & Sons in April-May, 1926, at a cost of $100,000 for the 1926 Sesqui-Centennial International Exposition. The bell was illuminated with 26,000 15-watt light bulbs set at six-inch centers and eight 200-watt projectors in the clapper. The structure contained 80 tons of steel resting on a foundation of 30-foot wooden pilings with a concrete capping.

Today it would cost $1,676,819.21 [+]

And here a picture of the Pummerin in #Vienna's St. Stephens Cathedral...

The Old Pummerin was originally cast in 1705 from 208 of the 300 cannons captured from the Muslim invaders in the Second Turkish Siege of Vienna.

Rooftop Statues

Location: overlooking the Burggarten, Hofburg Palace, Vienna, Austria

The inscription reads: his aedibus adhaeret concors populorum amor, meaning: In this building I reconciled the love of the nations (peoples)

I can't say more about these particular statues conversations or relationships, but I imagine a storied history, as all around this palace.

I do like both the statues and architecture, reminds me too of Prague.

The Great Palm House (VIenna)

Impressive inside and out. Known also (depending on translation) as the Large, or Great Palm House (US: 'Greenhouse').
With steam,

"The Schönbrunn Palm House was the last of its type to be constructed in continental Europe." - Source (see below, pls pora*)

The Palm House is located on the site of the former Dutch Botanical Garden and was erected in 1881/2 to designs by [Emperor] Franz Xaver Segenschmid.
One hundred and thirteen metres long, the Palm House consists of a 28-metre high central pavilion and two lateral pavilions which are three metres lower. Linked by tunnel-like passages, the pavilions contain different climatic zones: a ‘cold’ house to the north, a temperate zone in the central pavilion and a tropical zone in the south pavilion.

In the 1800's.

TAT #2818

My reference in the title to the Thematic Apperception Test which was an early (researched) psychological test, and it was a series of images with drawings of various situations, from the serene to the ghastly, Like the Rorschach... "Projective". (Like TFG too!)

This is not a test! But I was always impressed by how many ways a moment in time can be perceived. And/or captured.

But what do you think is captured in this photo? The theme? "There are no right or wrong answers"

Vienna Opera House at Night

Vienna Opera House (Wiener Staatsoper)

Always a hub of activity in the center of Vienna, passersby are often treated to free samples from opera musicians and/or street performers. In late summer 2022 the performance schedule had just begun to bring back live concerts (post-pandemic) but even as the first shows were announced, the music took to the streets.

A very short clip, the music indistinct, with a pan around that spot so you can see a bit of the Kärntner Ring (circling the city center) and Hotel Sacher, home of THE Sacher torte. Mm.
