Kea Parrots Treat Physical and Virtual Worlds as Continuous and Equivalent, Study Shows

Using touchscreen laptops, a team of researchers from the University of Auckland has tested whether kea (Nestor notabilisa) — a large species of parrot endemic to the Southern Alps of New Zealand — behave as naive realists and so expect physical processes to be continuous between the physical and virtual worlds. Their results appear in the journal Biology Letters.

Apparently, that holds true even if you're a parrot with only half a beak. Biologists have discovered that Bruce – a disabled New Zealand kea (Nestor notabilis) at the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve in Christchurch – has been using tiny little pebbles to preen himself.

When I was #cycling today (in beautiful weather), I saw passed a couple of seniors sitting on a bench with two #parrots. One was definitely a #ScarletMacaw and I think the other was a #Cockatoo. It's easy to forget how big they are and both were magnificent. I gave an involuntary and loud "Wow" as I rode by as they're rarely seen around here.
