#strawberries

I planted these spring onions as companion plants for my strawberries last summer.

I wasn't expecting them to grow big, just to deter the bugs from my strawberries on the balcony. It worked and I didn't have any problems with bugs on any of the pots with strawberries (despite huge problems with other plants and bugs).

Some 7 months later, the strawberries are all in winter mode and these onions are getting really big. I have already picked a few of them from the pots and used them in cooking or frozen some as they get too big for the small planters on the balcony.

These 2 are going to be used in a spring onion soup and the rest will be frozen for future use.

Thanks to the tip someone gave me last spring, I have been self sufficient when it comes to these and don't think I will ever buy them from the shops again.

Earlier this year, I planted some spring onions between my strawberries to prevent them from getting attacked by bugs.

Surprisingly it worked well and now that the strawberries starting to fade. The spring onions are growing faster and I have already harvested 2 grocery stores size plants from another pot and have some 20 more growing.

Lost lot of of them in the aphids infestation that I didn't detect earlier, but I have more than enough for my personal use and enjoy having fresh leaves of them with my stews and sandwiches.

I never had good luck with strawberries.

I keep buying them and they keep dying on me. Last year I bought 6 plants, decided to keep some in a dedicated planter and not mix it with anything else 4 died and managed to get more plants from the runners.

This spring, I see flowers popping up and they seems to be really healthy.

Preparing some organic liquid fertilizer to feed them so they have enough nutrients to grow healthy fruits.

My daughter is coming at the end of April to visit and I hope to be able to give her some delicious home grown strawberries (her favorite when she was a kid).

I was worried thaty strawberries from last year were not doing so well.

Gave them a boost of organic fertilizer last week and now I see a little flower popping up.

I really don't like #strawberries, but love to grow them. They are so pretty and love to keep expanding them via the runners.

But I kill more plants than I ever eat their fruits. And it's one of the plants I've never been able to grow from seeds!

5 died. And the last one seems to be doing great. 3rd round of flowers and fruits, 5 baby plants and 3 runners. Going to grow half in soil and half in hydroponics. To see what i do.

Will use mycheap hydroponic unit for 3 strawberries. It is not cost effective, but can be fun to try. Place it on the bedroom window so it gets evening sunshine and 8 hours of LED lights per day.
