Konsave lets you save, apply and share Linux desktop theme customisations

Linux desktop showing a misty blue background scene with a lake at the bottom half, a line of trees in the centre, and sky above. At the bottom is a Latte Dock showing five icons on it. At the top centre is a transparent folder titled Activity Recording, and showing a folder and three purple app icons.
KDE, especially, is known for its amazing themes and theme customisations. With that can come lots of tweaking, and then forgetting how to get back to what you really liked. Or maybe you want to share that fantastic theme combination that you got right with friends.

Konsave helps do all of this very simply and effectively. I do like that all its options are logically named like -r for remove, -l for list, etc. So, although it is command line driven, it is really easy to use.

It officially supports KDE Plasma, but can be used on all other Linux desktop environments too. It is an open-source application written in Python.

Stylus is a desktop browser extension that applies better looking styles to your favourite websites

Screenshot showing various tiles, each with a different theme style image and title
Stylus injects its own CSS into targeted pages and therefore makes you able to override the present design of a webpage. If you know CSS, you can write and create your own styles. Otherwise, you can just install styles by other authors from userstyles.org (USO). You can also search for styles for the current site on USO from within the Stylus extension.

Stylus browser extension is available for Chrome, Firefox and Opera desktop browsers. Note that Stylus is a fork of the Stylish extension. I tried initially to install Stylish, but once it said it wanted to track every single website I visited, it was quickly deleted. Stylus is privacy respecting and open-source software. Not “ish”, but “us”, as in “us” the actual users, is how Stylus terms it. The extension is being actively maintained and updated.

What I like about Stylus is that you just go to any website and then click on the extension icon for it to quickly search and show you if there are some styles for it (there is no download, save, then import). It is also pretty easy to extend a style by editing it, and you have a choice of your own cloud services you can sync it to (I use two different browsers, so this works to sync the styles between them). It also has an automatic update for the styles.

I see numerous sites are supported such as Facebook, Gmail, YouTube, Discord, Lemmy, Mastodon, X, Wikipedia, LinkedIn, MeWe, and many more. I discovered this extension when I was looking for something to dynamically resize the column widths for the Mastodon site.

What is a Amiga Demo or Megademo

The Commodore Amiga was a popular #personal #computer that was known for its #advanced #graphics and #sound #capabilities. One of the ways that users of the Amiga #demonstrated these capabilities was through the #creation of #demos, which were short #programs that #showcased the system's #audio and #visual capabilities.

MegaDemos, also known as demo #collections, were a type of Amiga demo that combined multiple smaller demos into a larger #package. These collections typically included several different demos with varying #themes and #styles, and were often designed to be impressive showcases of the Amiga's capabilities.

MegaDemos were usually created by groups of demo #programmers and #artists who collaborated to create the demos, and they often competed with other groups to see who could create the most impressive demo. These #competitions were known as demo parties, and were popular among Amiga enthusiasts in the 1980s and 1990s.

Some famous MegaDemos include the "Unreal" and "State of the Art" demos by the demo group "The Silents," and "Hardwired" and "9 Fingers" by "Spaceballs." These demos were known for their impressive visuals, music, and animations, and were popular among Amiga users and demo enthusiasts.

MegaDemos played an important role in the early demo scene and helped to showcase the power of the Amiga's advanced graphics and sound capabilities. Today, they are still enjoyed by retro gaming enthusiasts and are seen as an important part of the history of the Commodore Amiga computer.

Bored of Flat Gnome Desktop UIs? Check Out Skeuos GTK Theme

Ever find yourself wishing your GTK theme had a bit more depth to it?
If so, check out the Skeuos GTK theme by Daniel Ruiz de Alegría. His sumptuous skin skewers modern expectations by embracing the bevels, drop-shadows, and gradients most modern themes actively avoid.

The result is a confident look with real visible visual hierarchy to it. Buttons look like buttons, toggles look like toggles, and focused elements have clear presence — you won’t mistake a label for an action while using this theme.

Even if you don't use Gnome, it is well worth having a browse through the latest theme releases for your desktop, as the last year has produced some great looking themes (especially dark) which gives your desktop a whole new look and feel.

Bored of flat themes? Check out this non-flat GTK theme for Linux desktops, including GNOME and Xfce. It's called Skueos and it's beautiful – check it out!

grin@diasp.grin.hu

My first messing with #themes, #stylesheets or #diaspora #css.

This is a #HiDPI display and diaspora default fonts are 2.3 mm high. Not friendly. So I went out and tried to play with it. Since I don't know how to make a new style reliably, I started to mess up Egyptian Blue.

app/assets/stylesheets/color_themes/egyptian_blue/_style.scss:

/** tweak font **/
$font-size-base: 18px !default;
$font-size-small: 16px !default;

@import url('https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Belleza|Signika+Negative&subset=latin-ext');
$font-family-sans-serif: 'Belleza', sans-serif;
/* Belleza, 'Signika Negative' */
$font-family-base: $font-family-sans-serif;

So raised the font size, used a pretty font lazyly pulled from google webfonts (well, actually, two fonts, but didn't use SignikaNegative now), and set the base fonts to Belleza face.

After changing the file I had to recompile it with
RAILS_ENV=production time bin/rake assets:precompile
and supposedly the pod immediately would use it. Not for me though, so I had to restart it. @Dennis Schubert said that it may be enough to restart Unicorn, somehow. ;-)

I am pretty happy with the results. If you're the user of diasp.grin.hu try to change to the Egyptian Blue theme. ;-)
