Local Elections: England

It’s unfair, undemocratic and completely fails to represent the views of voters. There is a better way.

Local councils are supposed to represent their communities. But often the make-up of council chambers fail to reflect how people voted – The First Past the Post system throws millions of votes on the scrapheap.

In London alone, 90% of wards with more than one councillor are represented by just one party, leaving hundreds of thousands of voters without a voice.

The BBC’s unjustified suspension of Gary Lineker for supporting refugees has thrown the corporation into crisis.

BBC chair Richard Sharp should resign over this mess alone – but the problems go much deeper. The chair is supposed to be impartial in their decisions and uphold BBC independence, but Sharp is closely linked to the Tory government.

Sharp played a crucial role in arranging an £800,000 loan for former prime minister Boris Johnson. This is already under investigation.

Boris Johnson is trying to hand a knighthood to his own father Stanley Johnson. This absurd level of corruption cannot stand.

Johnson has nominated his father to become a ‘Sir’ as part of his resignation honours, the Times revealed. This is a list that outgoing prime ministers get to choose – but it is unprecedented to select their own family members.

Boris Johnson has a track record of nepotism in appointments, having previously put his brother and several close friends into the House of Lords.

Children rushed to hospital with scurvy as parents can't afford fruit and vegetables

United Kingdom now a third world country

Young children are being taken to hospital suffering with scurvy because their parents can't afford to feed them fruit and vegetables, nurses are warning.

Last year, a huge rise in cases the Victorian illness was reported.

There was tripling of hospital admissions for malnutrition since 2010, which was branded "a shameful indictment on a decade of the Tories" by Shadow Health Secretary Jonathan Ashworth.

The worrying increases coincide with soaring numbers of people relying on food banks as the cost of living crisis deepens.

A Lack of Oversight in the Tory Leadership Contest Damages Democracy

The Conservative Party is selling leadership votes abroad for as little as £25. For those under-26 it’s even cheaper, a mere £5 to become a member and select the next Prime Minister.

This right to vote is a benefit offered to all party members of at least three months’ standing. Because voting closes in September, people abroad who paid up before early June have a say in selecting the country’s next prime minister, as appointed by the party in power though technically by the Queen.

Only around 160,000-200,000 in the UK may do so, and hardly a representative sample of the population at that.

The government is planning to spend £2.2 billion bailing out private energy company Bulb (which collapsed last year).

Now they want to pay Octopus a further £1 billion to take it over.

This makes no sense.

Now is the perfect time to set up a publicly owned company like EDF in France which has kept their bill rises to only 4%.

Brace yourselves: New UK Data Laws are Coming

The Government have just announced their plans to gut the UK General Data Protection Regulation.

They are proposing to bonfire your rights and remove the protections the law affords to your:- Private life
- Vulnerabilities
- Aspirations.

This is but a natural product of poor proposals being discussed in a rigged consultation process.

Big multinational corporations, their lawyers, and corporate-funded think tanks were advising the Government on how to keep our data safe, courtesy of the “International Data Transfers Expert Council”.

At the same time, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport were taking care of ignoring the critical voices of civil society and ordinary citizens, in a delicate balance of arbitrary cherry-picking and a smokescreen of wishful thinking.

The outcome of such a shiny example of integrity in policymaking is rather damning.

According to what the Government have announced, individuals would lose protections against discrimination and abuses, only to get less choices in return.

Dodgy businesses would get their licence to be malicious, reckless, and to launder your personal data overseas, far from your eyes and those of the Regulators.

The cherry on the cake, the Information Commissioner’s Office (the Regulator) would be coopted by the same Government they should keep an eye on.
