Welcome to #Checkin for Saturday, January 6, 2024

How are you these days? Here’s where you can slip away from your reality to continue the topic from yesterday or earlier, send a wave, give a brief update or take part in the daily thread topic. If you are #NewHere; welcome!

Photography month is one thing, a full year of advancing one's skills at one's own pace another. As it goes, a matching challenge crossed my path around the year's end. And I kinda like the idea to take pictures in a more.. focused way. First week, which is almost over by today and when you read this, had #trees as the topic. Here's where it comes from, https://norberteder.photography/52-wochen-foto-challenge-2024/ (translate page at your leisure; I have the topics for you in this post's image).

By accident I found the hashtag and the #52wochenfotochallenge given that photography was quite a thing for me back when it was (teenage years). So many factors.. time, mobility, experimental spirit, some experience and knowledge beyond the shutter is helpful.

The place to post results, I'd suggest, is a pixelfed. Works like a fedi-fied Instagram, if the comparison means anything at all, without the nasty. Mastodon is fine too! Tag your contribution, someone will find it.

There's pixelfed instances everywhere, and the fedi integration works rather well. Whatever you decide to do, following the hashtag #52wfc24 or the original idea by https://graz.social/@norberteder could be inspiring. What do you think? Thinking where that old camera is? I for one would think shooting for this on film would be a radical idea. I'll sure take the digital path.

The recent stormy weather has caused many #trees to shed large twigs and even whole branches onto the ground and in particular paths. Today a large twig, about 15 cm long and 1 cm in diameter wedged into the #spokes of the rear#wheel of my #bicycle, causing it to jam completely. Luckily, I wasn't going too fast and so was able to stop safely but it caught the #mudguard and bent it double. Though I managed to untangle it, I may have to replace it. Ho hum.

At this time of year the eucalyptus trees shed their bark. Underneath the new bark can have the most amazing colours! The one eucalypt with the pink bark is called a "lemon eucalyptus" because it gives off the most beautiful lemony scent, especially on humid days like today!

Happy #Winter #Solstice!

This is my second winter living on the edge of Lion Wood. Tough very small, it is designated ancient woodland, legal jargon indicating that #trees have been growing here for centuries. There are certainly some big old ones.

I've never felt the myth of the Oak King and the Holly King as strongly as I do here. In winter, the oaks, beeches, birches and sycamores lose their leaves, and the major source of green is #holly.
