A little after #sunset and the #NewMoon at #dusk is approaching the #western #horizon, with #Earthshine illuminating the "dark" side. There's also #Venus there and, if you look very closely, you can also see #Saturn to the bottom right of the #planet. Add in a wisp of #cloud, an #aeroplane and its #contrail in the mid distance, #trees and a #house nearby and finish it off with a #sky turning from smoothly from deep #orange to a dark #blue and you end up with rather a nice collage. I used a #tripod to get a good #photograph here.

Post #sunset, the sky cleared up somewhat and the #gold on the #horizon merged into the deep #blue of approaching night. (Apologies about the slightly blurred images as I didn't have time to set up my #tripod.)
The #fog had dissipated from the #neighbourhood but lingered as #mist on lower ground like a #translucent #shroud of #water #vapour.

I think of myself as a hobbyist #photographer interested in many things, including #astronomy and sometimes I get lucky. Tonight, for example, I noticed #Jupiter was close to the #Moon and so I got my #tripod out and tried to #photograph the pair. Currently, both are in #Capricorn and to get both, one needs a longish exposure. Here I used 2 s. This of course means that the Moon's features can't be seen as the lit surface is #overexposed but you can see its unlit side too.
The very nice thing about this image is that you can actually see Jupiter's four largest satellites too, so you could say that the photograph actually shows five #moons in total. Jupiter is forming a triangle here with #DenebAlgedi (bottom left) and #Nashira (bottom right)
By focusing around Jupiter itself, you can see its moons much better. From left to right, you can see #Europa, #Io, #Ganymede and #Callisto. The three #stars forming a diagonal line are, respectively, 45, 44 and 42 #Capricorni (left to right).

Test Shot
of the waning moon.

I finally got myself a decent tripod - I’m generally quite good at handholding, but for really sharp shots with an unstabilized tele a tripod is the way to go, except when one can afford really fast shutter speeds.
This is a pixel-for-pixel (1:1) crop, or in smartphone parlance a “6x digital zoom” ;-)

Here is tonight's #sunset. I was more methodical today than yesterday and used a #tripod to keep the #Sun at the centre of the frame as closely as I could and so the images don't roll as much. It also means that the Sun is stationary and the Earth is moving. I also tried to take #photographs every 20 s or so. This gives a smoother feeling to the #time-lapse #animation.
