US seeks birthplace proof for visas from new passport holders
The U.S. embassy in Hanoi has instructed holders of the new Vietnamese passport to bring along documents proving their place of birth when applying for a visa.
It said Friday: “The U.S. government continues to review the new Vietnamese blue passport issued starting July 1, 2022, to determine if it meets U.S. requirements for visa issuance and travel. We expect a determination to be made soon.”
From August 15 applicants must make sure to write their place of birth when filling the DS-160 or DS-260 application, it said.
“Do not write your place of origin or your place of birth registration. Write the name of the city/province and country where your mother gave birth to you.”
The DS-160 is a nonimmigrant visa while the DS-260 is for permanent residence in the U.S.
Applicants with interviews scheduled must bring their original birth certificate starting August 15, it said.
“If you do not have an original birth certificate but do have an old (green) passport that shows your place of birth, then bring the old passport along with your new blue one.
“If you have received the new passport, we strongly suggest that you request that the place of birth be added as an endorsement prior to your interview.”
The old passport will continue to be valid until expiry.
The new one has been rejected by Germany, Spain, Finland, and the Czech Republic due to lack of birthplace information, with Germany and Spain denying visas to holders.
However, the Spanish embassy has since said it would accept the new passport, but those who wish to apply for a visa need to furnish their identity cards to verify their place of birth.
The Ministry of Public Security said recently a column for place of birth would be added to the new passport to make it convenient for citizens.
Until the change is effected, the information would be added manually to the passport upon request, public security minister To Lam said.

Thaïlande : les séjours de plus d'un mois bientôt exemptés de visa ?
Pour permettre aux voyageurs étrangers de rester plus longtemps dans le pays, les autorités envisagent de prolonger de 15 jours la durée des séjours autorisés sans visa.
Prolonger de quinze jours la durée de séjour autorisé sans visa, c’est l’idée de l’Autorité du tourisme de Thaïlande pour permettre aux étrangers de rester plus d’un mois sur le territoire. Le régime d’exemption de visa touristique permet aujourd’hui aux ressortissants de 56 pays (dont la France) de séjourner sans visa pendant 30 jours. Cette durée pourrait bientôt être portée à 45 jours.
Alors que le royaume a largement rouvert ses frontières et n’impose désormais plus aucune restriction, le gouverneur de l’Autorité du tourisme de Thaïlande, Yuthasak Supasorn, soumettra cette proposition au Centre pour l’administration de la situation du Covid-19 lors de la prochaine réunion le 19 août. Si elle est acceptée, la mesure s’appliquerait dès approbation et jusqu’au 31 décembre 2022.
Plus de jours, plus de dépenses
Au plus fort de la pandémie de Covid-19, les autorités thaïlandaises avaient exceptionnellement fait passer la durée d’exemption de visa de 30 à 45 jours afin de compenser les 14 jours de quarantaine obligatoire à l’arrivée. En octobre 2021, alors que les conditions d’entrée s’assouplissaient, elle a de nouveau été abaissée à 30 jours.
L’office de tourisme thaïlandais s’attend à ce que les voyageurs restent en moyenne cinq jours de plus. Or qui dit séjour plus long dit plus de dépenses. Elles sont estimées à 120 € par jour et par voyageur : chaque touriste injecterait ainsi 600 € de plus dans l’économie du pays, très dépendant du tourisme. La Thaïlande envisage d’instaurer une taxe touristique d’environ 8 € à payer à l’arrivée afin de soutenir un secteur sinistré après deux années de pandémie.

Finland denies visa for Vietnamese passports over lack of birthplace info
Finland has stopped recognizing Vietnam’s new passports due to the lack of information regarding places of birth, the Embassy of Finland in Hanoi announced on Thursday.
In a statement released on its Facebook account, the embassy said the new passport “does not contain information of the place of birth of the passport holder, which is a requirement for personal identification and also for processing of Finnish visa/residence permit applications.”
Therefore, Finland has decided to “temporarily suspend recognition of Vietnam’s new passport,” meaning their holders would not be able to apply for visa or residence permit until further notice.
Finland is the latest country to reject Vietnam’s new passport over the lack of places of birth. Previously July 27, Germany denied visas for holders of Vietnam’s new passports, followed by Spain on Aug. 1. The Czech Republic on August 2 also said it does not recognize Vietnam’s new passport for the same reason.
However, the Spanish Embassy in Hanoi on Monday said it would accept Vietnam’s new passport following consultation with Spanish authorities. But those who wish to apply for visa need to bring both their new passports and valid identity cards to verify their places of birth, it added.
Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security said information regarding places of birth would be added to Vietnam’s new passports to make it convenient for citizens. For now, such information would be manually added to the new passports upon request, and in the long run, there would be adjustments to the new passports so that one’s place of birth would be included, said public security minister To Lam.
Vietnamese new passport, with decorations on its pages and covers, has been in use since July 1 this year. The old, green cover passports will continue to be valid till they expire.
