#Israel / [l’état-c’est-moi] Netanyahu: Israel won't give in to int'l pressure trying to end war, force electionsAs expected, Netanyahu seems to be melding criticism of his personal leadership with criticism of #Israel's policies and actions, leaving no nuance or separation between the two in his comments.

Netanyahu criticized international pressure trying to end Israel's military operation in Gaza before achieving its goals. He also accused the international community of making "false accusations" against Israel's military, government and himself in an attempt to stop the war prematurely.

Russian torture of Ukrainian POWs ‘widespread and systematic,’ UN commission says

One Ukrainian soldier, who was detained and tortured by Russian authorities in several detention facilities, recounted his experience in the correctional colony in the town of Donskoy, Tula region, where he was repeatedly subjected to torture and left with broken bones, broken teeth and gangrene on an injured foot,” the report reads.

“‘I lost any hope and the will to live,’ the soldier said, adding that he had tried to kill himself but perpetrators subjected him to further beating.”

The document also highlights “incidents of rape and other sexual violence committed against women in circumstances which also amount to torture” as well as “incidents of torture with a sexualized dimension and threats of rape against male prisoners of war.”

Speaking to journalists in #Geneva after the release of the findings, the chair of the commission, Erik Møse, said: “Victims' accounts disclose relentless brutal treatment inflicting severe pain and suffering during prolonged detention, with blatant disregard for human dignity.”

The torture and execution of Ukrainian POWs has been well-documented throughout Russia’s full-scale invasion.

EU to propose funneling billions in profits generated by Russian assets to Ukraine

The European Commission may soon propose a plan to confiscate 27 billion euros ($29 billion) in profits generated by frozen Russian assets and transfer them to Ukraine, The Guardian reported on March 14, citing its sources.

The commission's officials plan to put forward a "legally robust proposal" for consideration by the member states, possibly before a meeting of prime ministers in Brussels on March 21, the outlet said.

Ukrainian drones attack 3 oil refineries in Russia, airfield in Voronezh Oblast

Ukrainian drones attacked three oil refineries in Russia, as well as a Russian Air Force air base, and an airfield in Voronezh Oblast overnight on March 13, Ukrainska Pravda reported, citing an unnamed source in the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).

Oil refineries were allegedly attacked in Ryazan, in the cities of Kstovo, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, and Kirishi, Leningrad Oblast, according to the media outlet.

The attacks, which Ukrainska Pravda's source called "a continuation of a series of special operations against Russian oil refineries that were launched earlier," were reportedly carried out by the SBU itself.

"Our task is to deprive the enemy of resources and reduce the flow of money from oil and fuel that the aggressor direct to the war and the killing of Ukrainian citizens," the unnamed source told the media outlet.

Ukraine charges 2 Russian soldiers with murdering civilian in Bucha in 2022

According to the recently published investigation, two Russian artillery commanders killed an unarmed man on March 19, 2022, at around 5 p.m.

The perpetrators shot the victim with small arms without warning, even though the man was dressed in civilian clothes and had a bandage on his arm, prosecutors said.

"The man was a civilian who did not take part in the armed conflict. He did not have any weapons, tools, or means that could justify the use of violence against him," the statement read.

The two Russian soldiers were charged with murder and violating the laws of war. It is unclear whether they are in Ukrainian captivity or whether they had been served the charges in absentia.

Esri Defense

GIS software company ESRI is shutting down internal conversations about whether or not their products are being used by the Israel Defense Forces - from an employee

EDITORIAL NOTE: Further reason to use FOSS4G? This report is uncorroborated, but seems to square with Environmental Systems Research Institute Inc's policies.

Throwaway account--trying to post in a few subs because I think this is important.

For those who don't know, ESRI creates Geographic Information Systems software. This software is used for making maps and spatial analysis, among other things. If you work in GIS, or use maps, you've probably used this software. Now for the important part.

On Monday, December 11, 2023, an employee posted in the HR Teams channel to ask the question: "Is the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) using ArcGIS to help with the current bombings in Gaza?" The employee went on to explain that they had reached out to HR with this question and was told that "the specific information you are requesting is not going to be supplied to you. We would need permission from a distributor or customer to provide specific information about products sold or used and we don't have said permission."

The employee went on to explain that they thought it was important for ESRI employees to know this information. The employee also inquired if others were concerned and wanted answers. The employee also pointed out that ESRI had taken a political stand previously with regard to Ukraine and Russia and provided a screenshot of an official ESRI statement that said: "Esri stands in solidarity with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. Our software is not and will not be deployed in any military or intel organization in Russia. Esri distributor CIS is curtailing sales in Russia. We are actively supporting the humanitarian efforts in Ukraine, and we continue to work with many European countries, as well as NATO, the United Nations, and the US State Department. Esri will do everything we can to help Ukraine and its people."

The post garnered a lot of attention and support from other employees. Several responded that they were concerned that ESRI is providing software for a genocide. The specific word "genocide" was used a few times. There was one dissenting comment.

On Wednesday, December 20, 2023, another employee commented on the thread to say that the original poster had resigned on Friday, December 15, 2023, due to "lack of answers from the administration."

Later that day, an email was sent out about a new policy with regard to the digital environment and appropriate business conduct.

Today, December 21, 2023, the entire thread and all of the responses were deleted, presumably by HR, since they manage the channel. An HR team member replied and said that "there were many posts involving sensitive topics and comments that were not appropriate for a business setting. I have received numerous inquiries and employees stating that they feel uncomfortable with the messaging and tone in these posts." Meanwhile, a separate post in the same channel, made on October 15, 2023, titled "Condemning the terrorist attacks in Israel" stayed up. It would seem that ESRI is not concerned with the discomfort of their Palestinian employees.

I am an ESRI employee and I am furious. ESRI talks about their commitment to making the world a better place while shutting down conversations by their employees about genocide. I don't think it's a secret that ESRI operates this way, but I wanted to share what's happening on the inside. Many of us are angry and we won't be silenced.

All 298 people on board, including 80 children, were killed when Russian proxy forces used a BUK missile system to shoot down the Malaysia Airlines flight above Donetsk Oblast on July 17, 2014.

The plane was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, and Dutch citizens made up 196 of the passengers on board.

Two Russian nationals, Igor Girkin and Sergey Dubinsky, and Ukrainian Leonid Kharchenko, were found guilty of shooting down MH17 at a #Hague District Court in November 2022

North Korean missiles used by Russia against Ukraine contain US, European components

#NorthKorean ballistic #missiles fired into Ukraine by the Russian military last month contained hundreds of components produced by companies in the U.S. and Europe, the Conflict Armament Research (CAR) organization announced in its February report.

CAR, an organization based in the U.K., studied missile remnants recovered from a Russian attack on the city of Kharkiv back in January. Not only did many of the recovered components display brands of companies based primarily in the U.S., but a large number of them were produced within the last three years.

Investigators determined that the North Korean ballistic missile included more than 290 non-domestic electronic components.

Russian forces kill Ukrainian priest in occupied part of Kherson Oblast

Podolchak was kidnapped from his home two days earlier by Russian forces, representatives from Kalanchak's military administration told the Suspilne media outlet.

"Today, it was discovered that (the Russians) killed the brightest person I was lucky enough to meet in my life," the military administration wrote on Facebook.

According to Suspilne, Podolchak continued to hold services in the Ukrainian language under Russian occupation and refused to be transferred to work under the Moscow Patriarchate.

#Romania scrambles F-16s amid Russian drone strikes on Odesa Oblast

Turkish F-16 fighter jets stationed in Romania were scrambled after Russian drone strikes on Odesa Oblast in the early morning of Feb. 10, Romania's Defense Ministry said.

Romania's Defense Ministry said that jets stationed at an airbase near Fetesti, some 200 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, were summoned in response to perform reconnaissance.

No unauthorized intrusions into Romanian airspace were detected, and no debris from downed Russians was found on Romanian territory, the ministry said.

Bucharest has strongly condemned Russian attacks against Ukrainian port infrastructure on the Danube River.

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said in October 2023 that an anti-drone system had been installed by the Ukrainian border after repeated instances of debris falling on Romanian territory.

#Bucharest has previously deployed additional security measures in the border areas, including setting up bomb shelters and issuing air raid warnings.

Russian military increasingly using Starlink terminals on battlefield

The Russian military has begun to use #Starlink terminals more actively on the front line, Militarnyi, a Ukrainian military news site, reported

A representative for #SpaceX, the manufacturer of Starlink terminals, denied that the company has ever sold or supplied the equipment to the Russian military.

According to Militarnyi, the Starlink terminals are likely being procured through intermediaries in third countries via parallel imports, making it near impossible to trace.

In June 2023, the Pentagon confirmed that SpaceX had won a contract from the Defense Department to provide Ukraine with Starlink satellite services.

Stoltenberg: West must be prepared for 'decades-long confrontation' with Russia

The West does not seek #war with Russia, but should still "prepare ourselves for a confrontation that could last decades," NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said

Lieutenant Admiral Rob Bauer, the chair of the #NATO Military Committee, said in January that civilians in NATO countries should be ready for the prospect of an all-out war with Russia within the next 20 years.

The possibility of direct conflict with Russia is likely dependent on the outcome of the war in Ukraine, Western officials have said.

"If (Russian President Vladimir) Putin wins in Ukraine, there is no guarantee that Russian aggression will not spread to other countries," Stoltenberg warned.

NATO must improve its military capabilities, Stoltenberg said, adding that "deterrence only works if it is credible."

Russia builds militaristic youth camps in occupied Zaporizhzhia Oblast

Russia continues to set up military camps for Ukrainian teenagers in the Russian-occupied territories of Zaporizhzhia Oblast

#RussianAggression has deeply harmed #UkrainianChildren and youth, facing abductions, physical peril, and efforts to suppress their identity in "re-education camps" and Russian "foster families."

Moscow plans to open a "center for military-sports training and patriotic education of youth called 'Warrior' based on the 'Iskra' children's health camp," the National Resistance Center said in its Feb. 8 report.

Teenagers will allegedly be taught firearms and engineering training.

This is "preparation for service in the Russian army."

Former Sen. Cory Gardner: Russia is a terrorist state

The case for Russia’s designation is clear. In the days surrounding New Year’s alone, Russia fired 500 missiles and drones over primarily civilian targets in Ukraine, killing dozens and injuring hundreds more

The indiscriminate bombardments hit schools, shopping malls, kindergartens, and hospitals (including a maternity ward in the city of Dnipro), as well as critical infrastructure like gas and power lines, which have no military value and are off-limits under the international laws of war. Some of these missiles were delivered from North Korea, in violation of multiple UN Security Council resolutions that Russia itself supported but now has gravely violated.

Situation in Avdiivka becomes 'critical in some places'

Russia intensified its attacks against #Avdiivka in October 2023, reportedly suffering heavy losses in an attempt to encircle the city mere kilometers from occupied Donetsk. In spite of the casualties, reports began emerging recently that Russian forces are making steady advances.

"The situation is very difficult, very tense. We could say that a few weeks ago, the situation was difficult but (still) under control," Barabash said on air.

The official added that this does not mean "that everything is lost" but stressed that Russia continues throwing large forces against Avdiivka.
