UK must train 'civilian army,' prepare for land war

The U.K. must increase its military readiness and prepare for the possibility of a land war with Russia that could see civilians conscripted into the army, the U.K.'s Chief of the General Staff, General Patrick Sanders, said

"Ukraine brutally illustrates that regular armies start wars; citizen armies win them," Sanders said, adding that the U.K. cannot simply rely on its air and naval power.

Civilians in NATO countries should be ready for the prospect of an all-out war with Russia within the next 20 years.

Russia's use of North Korean ballistic missiles not a sign of Moscow's depleted domestic capacity

Russia’s missile campaign against Ukraine’s cities and infrastructure is no longer limited by the rate of domestic production as North Korea becomes its top weapons supplier.

#Pyongyang has allegedly sent Moscow more than 1 million artillery rounds and the mass strikes on Dec. 30 and Jan. 2 provided the first direct evidence that Russia used North Korean missiles to attack a Ukrainian city, specifically Kharkiv.

Experts say this will allow Russia to intensify its attacks on #civilian targets, killing people, doing costly damage, and putting a strain on Ukraine’s air defenses.

The two heavily sanctioned autocracies have grown progressively closer since the start of Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion.

NATO signs contracts for $1.2 billion worth of artillery shells

Contracts concluded on Jan. 23 for the purchase of around 220,000 155mm artillery shells worth around $1.2 billion

These munitions play a crucial in the Russia-Ukraine war, prompting Kyiv's allies to ramp up its 155mm shells stocks.

This demonstrates that NATO's tried and tested structures for joint procurement are delivering

Russia to be grilled on fate of forcibly deported Ukrainian children at UN Committee

The UN Committee seeks to determine how many children have been deported to Russia or within Russian-occupied territories, as well as what Russia has done to protect “the right of such children to preserve their identity, including nationality, name and family relations."

Since last February, nearly 20,000 Ukrainian children have been identified as #abducted from Russian-occupied territories and sent to other Russian-controlled areas of Ukraine, or to Russia itself

Russia using relatively accurate, recently designed North Korean missiles against Ukraine

Russia used more North Korean missiles to attack Ukraine in the past few days, and U.S. officials believe they are "proving as accurate as Russia's home-built" weapons, the New York Times reported in its Jan. 23 morning briefing.

Moscow and Pyongyang have significantly increased their military ties since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. According to Ukrainian military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov, North Korea is now Russia's largest arms supplier.

Defense Ministry after #Ramstein summit: Ukraine to receive more long-range weapons

Commitments were made to supply Ukraine with additional long-range striking capabilities, among other things

Russia has used six times more artillery shells than Ukraine, sacrificed an average of 400 soldiers in exchange for one square kilometer of land," exceeded Ukraine's capabilities in producing first-person view (FPV) drones, but despite all this, has not come close to its strategic goals.

It can hardly be considered an achievement that the huge military industry of Russia, the whole army of the aggressor, spent a whole year to capture the ruins of two cities#Bakhmut and #Marinka

EU foreign ministers agree on plan to transfer profits from frozen Russian assets to Ukraine

European Union foreign ministers have reached a political agreement to finalize the work on transferring revenues from frozen Russian assets to Ukraine based on the proposal suggested in December, EU's top diplomat Josep Borrell said on Jan. 22.

"I'm almost sure this will be finalized soon… Discussions will continue on the level of ambassadors, but I see that the agreement is coming," Borrell told reporters following a meeting of the EU foreign ministers in Brussels.

UK government ignored foreign office concerns over Israeli war crimes

Court papers recently revealed the foreign office warned the UK government about Israel’s actions in Gaza, following its International Humanitarian Law assessment. It stated “the volume of strikes, total death toll, as well as proportion of those who are children raise serious concerns” and “the government’s current inability to come to a clear assessment on Israel’s record of compliance with International Humanitarian Law poses significant policy risks”.

However, the government hid this information from parliament and insisted it was confident that Israel was complying with international humanitarian law (because Israel said it was) so they could continue sending it bombs. Isn’t that reassuring?

2 years into full-scale war, Ukraine under pressure to draft hundreds of thousands of new soldiers

As Russia’s full-scale war approaches its third year and looks ready to drag on for several more, one topic is dominating the discussion in Ukraine: mobilization.

One of the most difficult internal challenges that Ukraine faces in this war: balancing the need to defend the country’s independence from an existential threat with the painful reality of having to take hundreds of thousands of civilians, taxpayers, fathers, brothers, husbands, and sons, off to war.

Russia deports 17 children with disabilities from occupied Donetsk Oblast

Russia #deported 17 Ukrainian children with #disabilities from the occupied part of Donetsk Oblast to a rehabilitation center near Moscow as part of the forced #passportization campaign in the occupied territories of Ukraine, Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets said on Jan. 22.

Ukrainian authorities have identified over 19,000 Ukrainian children who have been illegally deported to Russia since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. Some of them were deported under the guise of sending them for rehabilitation and then put into the custody of Russian families.

EU creates fresh plan for $22 billion in military support for Ukraine

The new proposal would seek to approach the deadlock with a plan to disburse the $22 billion back to EU member states over the next four years in compensation for funds they have spent on military aid for Ukraine.

The EU is also set to meet on Feb. 1 to vote again on a $54 billion package of economic aid to Ukraine previously blocked by Hungary in December

North Korea currently Russia's largest arms supplier

North Korea has transferred "a significant amount" of artillery ammunition to Russia

"This allowed Russia to breathe a little,” Budanov said. “Without (North Korea's) help, the situation would have been catastrophic.”

Russia has been struggling to keep up with the production of its weapons and munitions at a rate that matches their usage on the front. As a result, they have been compelled to seek military assistance from countries such as North Korea.

"This has always been considered beneath them, it’s an indignity,"

Slovak PM promises to block Ukraine's NATO entry, says it must cede territory

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico came out with another anti-Ukrainian public statement on Jan. 20, telling Slovak radio that he would block Ukraine's accession to NATO.

Fico is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal on Jan. 24.

The Slovak premier, who consistently joins Hungarian leader Viktor Orban in repeating Russian talking points about Ukraine, then claimed that Kyiv is dominated by Washington.

He said Ukraine will have to give a piece of its territory to Russia, which he called a "compromise."

NATO official warns of 'all-out war' with Russia within next 20 years

We have to realize it’s not a given that we are in peace. And that’s why we (NATO) are preparing for a conflict with Russia,"

As Russia has increasingly put its economy on a wartime footing, Europe has fallen short of even its pledges to deliver weapons to Ukraine, let alone prepare its own armies for war. Europe's supply of military equipment to Ukraine has already strained its capacity and stockpiles, creating concerns that it may take years to refill reserves, barring a full mobilization of industrial output.

IAEA chief: Previously removed mines at Zaporizhzhia power plant 'back in place'

The mines which were previously identified by the IAEA team and were removed in November 2023, "are now back in place" in a restricted area inaccessible to operational plant personnel, according to Grossi.

"The presence of mines is inconsistent with the IAEA safety standards," Grossi said.

The plant also lost its immediate back-up power supply to the reactor units for several hours this week, the monitoring mission reported, in the latest incident underlining "persistent nuclear safety and security risks" at the site. The back-up power supply was reportedly restored eight hours later when two other back-up power electrical transformers were put into operation.
