Why You Need To Throw away Your Black Kitchen Utensils and Takeout Containers

To be clear, manufacturers aren’t adding flame retardants to black plastic kitchen items on purpose. Instead, the new study explains that these toxic compounds are making their way into the black plastic supply through the recycling of black plastic electronics. BFRs and other flame retardants are added to these appliances to reduce the risk of them catching on fire, and when the electronics get recycled alongside other types of black plastic, they contaminate the whole lot. “The detection of FRs in collected household products indicates that recycling, without the necessary transparency and restrictions to ensure safety, is resulting in unexpected exposure to toxic flame retardants in household items,” the study reads.

Recycling Plastic Is a Dangerous Waste of Time https://quillette.com/2024/06/17/recycling-plastic-is-a-dangerous-waste-of-time-microplastics-health/

Multiple paper trails indicate that industry leaders knew from the start that recycling could never work at scale. And indeed, it hasn’t. Only about nine percent of plastic worldwide gets recycled, and the US manages only about six percent.

As bad as this is, the situation might actually be much worse. According to an emerging field of study, the facilities that recycle plastic have been spewing massive amounts of toxins called microplastics into local waterways, soil, and air for decades

Yes, #plastics are #toxic. And this is what they mean by environmental racism.

No warnings were given on April 16 when people in Aamjiwnaang first felt ill, when the province’s system had benzene readings far exceeding what is considered safe in Ontario. An industry-run local alert system, which often sends messages to advise of leaks or changes at the spaghetti-like masses of piping, flare stacks and massive chemical tanks at nearby oil refineries and chemical plants failed to note the apparent leak. Nor did any public warnings come from Ontario’s Environment Ministry, which operates the air monitoring system across the Chemical Valley. Benzene levels exceeded safety guidelines for hours on April 16 at the band office air quality monitor, which displays results online.

Clumps of 5,000-mile seaweed blob bring flesh-eating bacteria to Florida

But now giant clumps of the 13m-ton morass labeled the Great Atlantic sargassum belt are washing up on Florida’s beaches, scientists are warning of a real-life threat from the piles of decomposing algae, namely high levels of the flesh-eating Vibrio bacteria lurking in the vegetation.

Even more worrying, the researchers say, is the role of ocean pollution in the proliferation of the bacteria, which can cause disease and death if a person gets infected.

Samples tested from the Caribbean and #Sargasso Sea within the Atlantic were abundant with plastic debris, which interacted with the algae and bacteria to create a “perfect pathogen storm [with] implications for both marine life and public health”.

The Myth of Plastic Recycling

The plastic industry has spent tens of millions of dollars promoting the benefits of plastic, a product that, for the most part, was buried, was burned or, in some cases, wound up in the ocean. The problem has existed for decades. In all that time, less than 10 percent of plastic has ever been recycled.

Meanwhile, plastic production is ramping up.
