People need someone to talk to, someone who can listen and know how to listen. "Most people do not listen with the intent to understand, they listen with the intent to reply" (don't remember who said that quote). With less connection and communication between the young and the adult in a meaningful way, its no surprise that when tools like those on character.ai become available they will be used to satisfy a need among the young (and the adult too, they are just slower to the cake). And if they AIs are helpful, then why not use them?

A Test of #Character

Why #Liberalism is a Mental Disorder

  • f a conservative doesn't like guns, he doesn't buy one.
  • If a liberal doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.
  • If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn't eat meat.
  • If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.
  • If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation. A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him..
  • If a conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels. Liberals demand that those they don't like be shut down.
  • If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church. A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and Jesus silenced.
  • If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it.. A liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his.

#MaxHeadroom was a #legendary #AI #character from the 80s. In 1987 however, a somewhat more #controversial version of him appeared on Chicago TV at 9:14pm. Rather than a comedic and exaggerated host, this version was a weirdly unsettling #hijacker, and the #incident became known as the Max Headroom Incident. This #hack/ #hijack/ #intrusion is something that has fascinated me for years, so here, I decided to cover the whole debacle.

A quotation by Mill, John Stuart

Precisely because the tyranny of opinion is such as to make eccentricity a reproach, it is desirable, in order to break through that tyranny, that people should be eccentric. Eccentricity has always abounded when and where strength of character has abounded; and the amount of eccentricity in a society has generally been proportional to the amount of genius, mental vigor, and more courage it contained. That so few dare to be eccentric marks the chief danger of the time.

John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) English philosopher and economist

On Liberty, ch. 3 (1859)

A quotation by Wilson, E. O.

True character arises from a deeper well than religion. It is the internalization of moral principles of a society, augmented by those tenets personally chosen by the individual, strong enough to endure through trials of solitude and adversity. The principles are fitted together into what we call integrity, literally the integrated self, wherein personal decisions feel good and true. Character is in turn the enduring source of virtue. It stands by itself and excites admiration in others. It is not obedience to authority, and while it is often consistent with and reinforced by religious belief, it is not piety.

E. O. Wilson (1929-2021) American biologist, naturalist, writer [Edward Osborne Wilson]

Consilience: The Unity of Knowledge, ch. 11 “Ethics and Religion” (1998)

A quotation by James, William

The hell to be endured hereafter, of which theology tells, is no worse than the hell we make for ourselves in this world by habitually fashioning our characters in the wrong way. Could the young but realize how soon they will become mere walking bundles of habits, they would give more heed to their conduct while in the plastic state. We are spinning our own fates, good or evil. Every smallest stroke of virtue or of vice leaves its never so little scar.

William James (1842-1910) American psychologist and philosopher
The Principles of Psychology, Vol. 1, ch. 4 “Habit” (1890)

Think of all the smart people who are made stupid by flaws of character. The finest watch isn’t fine long when used as a hammer.
