#Microsoft offers legal #protection for #AI #copyright infringement challenges

Source: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/09/microsoft-offers-legal-protection-for-ai-copyright-infringement-challenges/

Microsoft's #announcement comes as generative AI tools like #ChatGPT have raised concerns about reproducing copyrighted material without proper attribution. Microsoft has heavily invested in AI through products like #GitHub #Copilot and #Bing Chat that can generate original code, text, and images on demand. Its AI models have gained these capabilities by scraping publicly available data off of the #Internet without seeking express #permission from copyright holders.

Now we know what #PirateBay made wrong:

They were not a multi million startup with a global company as a sponsor. So what they did was #piracy. But if #ChatGPT copies the whole internet it's a business model.

What we’re able to show today is that at least one #domain #registrar in the United States has suspended domain names under the instructions of the High #Court of #Delhi. The suspensions are part of a dynamic+ injunction issued in India last year, to protect the rights of several #Hollywood studios and #Netflix, ostensibly in #India.

"If buying isn't owning, #piracy isn't stealing"

Source: https://pluralistic.net/2023/12/08/playstationed/#tyler-james-hill

Last week, #Playstation owners who'd bought (or "bought") Warner TV shows got messages telling them that #Warner had walked away from its deal to sell videos through the Playstation store, and so all the videos they'd paid for were going to be deleted forever. They wouldn't even get refunds (to be clear, refunds would also be #bullshit – when I was a bookseller, I didn't get to break into your house and steal the books I'd sold you, not even if I left some cash on your kitchen table).

So the entertainment industry thinks copying is like stealing but deleting bought licenses from the customer is not stealing because it's normal business? It's a mad world.

I proposed that all Wired endorsements for DRM-encumbered products should come with this disclaimer:\
\
WARNING: THIS DEVICE’S FEATURES ARE SUBJECT TO REVOCATION WITHOUT NOTICE, ACCORDING TO TERMS SET OUT IN SECRET NEGOTIATIONS. YOUR INVESTMENT IS CONTINGENT ON THE GOODWILL OF THE WORLD’S MOST PARANOID, TECHNOPHOBIC ENTERTAINMENT EXECS. THIS DEVICE AND DEVICES LIKE IT ARE TYPICALLY USED TO CHARGE YOU FOR THINGS YOU USED TO GET FOR FREE — BE SURE TO FACTOR IN THE PRICE OF BUYING ALL YOUR MEDIA OVER AND OVER AGAIN. AT NO TIME IN HISTORY HAS ANY ENTERTAINMENT COMPANY GOTTEN A SWEET DEAL LIKE THIS FROM THE ELECTRONICS PEOPLE, BUT THIS TIME THEY’RE GETTING A TOTAL WALK. HERE, PUT THIS IN YOUR MOUTH, IT’LL MUFFLE YOUR WHIMPERS.\

Wired didn't take me up on this suggestion.

Everybody loves this racket. In Poland, a team of security researchers at the OhMyHack conference just presented their teardown of the anti-repair features in NEWAG Impuls locomotives. NEWAG boobytrapped their trains to try and detect if they've been independently serviced, and to respond to any unauthorized repairs by bricking themselves:\

Poland is part of the EU, meaning that they are required to uphold the provisions of the 2001 EU Copyright Directive, including Article 6, which bans this kind of reverse-engineering. The researchers are planning to present their work again at the Chaos Communications Congress in Hamburg this month – Germany is also a party to the EUCD. The threat to researchers from presenting this work is real – but so is the threat to conferences that host them:\

The United States acknowledged Friday that it seized a shipment containing nearly a million barrels of Iranian oil earlier this year.

According to the US Department of Justice, the oil is “the subject of a civil forfeiture action” after the shipping company that operated the vessel carrying the oil pleaded guilty to conspiring to violate US sanctions.

PS. For months people called it for spreading Iranian propaganda when I shared news about this, I wonder if any of them will come out and apologize.

Rockstar just proved how important piracy is for game preservation

Discovered by modder ‘Silent’, the Steam version of Midnight Club 2 is actually the version that the scene group “Razor 1911” cracked back in 2003. Let me repeat that. Rockstar was selling on Steam a cracked copy of its game.

#Google #Search Asked to Remove One Billion ‘Pirate’ Links in 9 Months

Looking more closely at the timeline, we see that a billion #URLs were reported to Google search in less than nine months. For comparison, it took twice as long to go from five to six billion, suggesting that the #takedown volume picked up again after a previously reported decline.

Music Labels Win Legal Battle Against Youtube-dl’s Hosting Provider

https://torrentfreak.com/music-labels-win-legal-battle-against-youtube-dls-hosting-provider-230404/

A German court has ordered hosting provider Uberspace to take the website of the open-source youtube-dl software offline. The ruling is the result of a copyright infringement lawsuit, filed by Sony, Warner and Universal last year. Uberspace will appeal the verdict and, meanwhile, youtube-dl's code remains available on GitHub.

You can download YouTube videos with https://invidious.baczek.me/ Just change the URL.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uSZwErdH3I -> https://invidious.baczek.me/watch?v=_uSZwErdH3I

Or you can just go to https://invidious.baczek.me/ and search for what you want.
