#Steam's new #disclaimer reminds everyone that you don't actually own your #games, #GOG moves in for the killshot: Its offline installers 'cannot be taken away from you'

Source: https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/steams-new-disclaimer-reminds-everyone-that-you-dont-actually-own-your-games-gog-moves-in-for-the-killshot-its-offline-installers-cannot-be-taken-away-from-you/

So if the absence of #ownership on Steam isn't new, why the new message? My assumption is that it arises from recent pushback against game publishers ending support for online games, rendering them inoperable, and in some cases revoking the #licenses to those games outright. That too is nothing particularly new, but #Ubisoft broke the camel's back earlier this year when it ended services for The Crew and stripped the license from people who had purchased it. That sparked a "Stop Killing Games" consumer campaign and, more pointedly, a new #California #law that requires retailers to warn consumers that the digital games they buy can be taken away at any time—as this message does.

Between September 2 and September 19, "a bug in one of Microsoft's internal monitoring agents resulted in a malfunction in some of the agents when uploading log data to our internal logging platform," Microsoft wrote in the #customer notification.

There's no evidence of cyberattacks stemming from this incident.

What Happens When a #Romance #Writer Gets Locked Out of #Google Docs

source: https://www.wired.com/story/what-happens-when-a-romance-author-gets-locked-out-of-google-docs/?esrc=AUTO_PRINT

In March, an aspiring author got a troubling message: All of her works in progress were no longer accessible. What happened next is every writer’s worst fear.

Google never specified which of her 222,000 words was inappropriate.

...

Generally speaking, files containing #violence, #abuse, child sexual abuse material, and gore violate the terms of service for Google Drive and its associated products, like Docs and Sheets.

Now many of you will be thinking, who is stupid enough to store everything in the Google #cloud? The problem is we know that, but many people out there don't. We urgently need to do more educational work and warn people about companies like Google and their practices. Tell all your friends and acquaintances and don't use the clouds of the big corporations.

The #tyranny of the #algorithm: why every #coffee #shop looks the same

Pursuing Instagrammability is a trap: the fast growth that comes with adopting a recognisable template, whether for a physical space or purely digital content, gives way to the daily grind of keeping up posts and figuring out the latest twists of the algorithm – which hashtags, memes or formats need to be followed. Digital platforms take away agency from the #business owners, pressuring them to follow in lockstep rather than pursue their own creative whims.

"If buying isn't owning, #piracy isn't stealing"

Source: https://pluralistic.net/2023/12/08/playstationed/#tyler-james-hill

Last week, #Playstation owners who'd bought (or "bought") Warner TV shows got messages telling them that #Warner had walked away from its deal to sell videos through the Playstation store, and so all the videos they'd paid for were going to be deleted forever. They wouldn't even get refunds (to be clear, refunds would also be #bullshit – when I was a bookseller, I didn't get to break into your house and steal the books I'd sold you, not even if I left some cash on your kitchen table).

So the entertainment industry thinks copying is like stealing but deleting bought licenses from the customer is not stealing because it's normal business? It's a mad world.

#Sony deleting purchased #PlayStation videos from customers’ libraries

Source: https://www.diversetechgeek.com/sony-deleting-purchased-playstation-videos-customers-libraries/

Discovery, they’ll be deleting a very long list of Discovery-related reality shows (“Shark Week,” etc.) from the (now-shuttered) PlayStation video store on December 31. This includes deleting the videos of anyone who’s paid for copies. And no, no refunds are planned (as of this writing); basically, the customers’ shows will just be gone, along with their cash.

DRM = Digital Restriction Management
Don't buy digital content you only get a short license but you own nothing at the end.

#Amazon Used Secret ‘Project Nessie’ #Algorithm to Raise #Prices

source: https://www.forbes.com/sites/willskipworth/2023/10/03/amazon-allegedly-used-secret-algorithm-to-raise-prices-on-consumers-ftc-lawsuit-reveals/

The algorithm was able to track how much Amazon’s power in the e-commerce field would get competitors to move their prices, and in instances in which competitors didn’t move their prices, the algorithm would return Amazon’s prices back down, according to the Journal.

(I don't link to the original source the "Wall Street Journal" because of the paywall.)

Amazon is #neoliberalism in its final stage. It is no longer about manufacturing #costs and fair prices, but only about how to eliminate the #competition with low prices or how high you can rip off your own customers.

#Dropbox Kills #Unlimited #Cloud #Space

source: https://www.techtimes.com/articles/295550/20230824/more-dropbox-unlimited-cloud-storage-highest-offered-plan-now-capped.htm

Originally, the storage plan was designed to cater to the needs of businesses. However, it appears that some people are just using it for cloud reselling, cryptocurrency mining, and other activities.

According to Dropbox, these "frequently consume thousands of times more storage than our genuine business customers, which risks creating an unreliable experience for all of our customers."

Companies should simply stop spreading such obvious #advertising lies. Everything has to be economical and no #company can afford unlimited. Why always lie so innocently and then when the #customer really uses the unlimitedness let loose such a drivel. Be honest and offer what you are willing to offer.
