Trouble in Hell, er, I mean "paradise". Yeah, "paradise".

New poll shows Floridians think Gov. DeSantis is kneecapping efforts to stop COVID-19

FTA: ... as we all know, this modern-day Johnny COVID-seed has incomprehensibly done everything in his power to promote the virus, including banning school mask mandates and preemptively scuttling the use of vaccine passports, even as Florida is so polluted with coronavirus the famous Epcot Center geosphere is on the verge of sprouting giant spike proteins. (Well, maybe not, but wouldn’t that be a fun prank to pull on Florida? If one of y’all can make the big spikey doodads, I’ll help you attach them in the dead of night.)

DeSantis is doubling down on disease because he wants to be president and hopes to dominate the already crowded “give me liberty and give me death” lane during the GOP primaries, which he no doubt sees as the easiest and “safest” route to the nomination. He probably knows that if he reverses course on his “freedom” bet now he’ll be seen as weak, so lots more dead Floridians are deemed a necessary evil.

That said, his bet may be starting to backfire as Florida residents begin to grasp that it’s kind of impossible to enjoy your God-given freedoms if you’re trapped in an ICU bed with an intubation tube rammed down your throat. [emphasis mine]

A new Quinnipiac poll suggests that DeSantis is wildly out of step with his constituents when it comes to COVID-19 mitigation strategies.

... "According to the Quinnipiac University poll, most Floridians, 60-36%, support requiring students, teachers, and staff to wear masks in schools..."

"In a separate question, the Q-Poll found that nearly 70% (68-29) of Floridians said that local officials should be able to require masks in indoor public spaces if they deem it necessary. Almost 60 percent of Floridians (59-39) said everyone should be required to wear masks while in indoor public spaces."

... 61% of Floridians surveyed said the recent spike in COVID-19 cases in the state was preventable.

The Colonial Pipeline Ransomware Hackers Had a Secret Weapon: Self-Promoting Cybersecurity Firms

Five months before DarkSide attacked the Colonial pipeline, two researchers discovered a way to rescue its ransomware victims. Then an antivirus company’s announcement alerted the hackers.

On Jan. 11, antivirus company Bitdefender said it was “happy to announce” a startling breakthrough. It had found a flaw in the ransomware that a gang known as DarkSide was using to freeze computer networks of dozens of businesses in the U.S. and Europe. Companies facing demands from DarkSide could download a free tool from Bitdefender and avoid paying millions of dollars in ransom to the hackers.

[Pro tip: When you find a flaw in the enemy's defensive or offensive capacity, don't fucking tell them.]

But Bitdefender wasn’t the first to identify this flaw. Two other researchers, Fabian Wosar and Michael Gillespie, had noticed it the month before and had begun discreetly looking for victims to help. By publicizing its tool, Bitdefender alerted DarkSide to the lapse, which involved reusing the same digital keys to lock and unlock multiple victims. The next day, DarkSide declared that it had repaired the problem, and that “new companies have nothing to hope for.”

“Special thanks to BitDefender for helping fix our issues,” DarkSide said. “This will make us even better.”

[Pro tip # 2: When your idiot enemy tells you their secrets, don't fucking thank them. DarkSide would have done much better to simply let BitDefender keep running it mouth.

Jeebus, people!]

[This whole episode just goes to show: Hackers (on either side) aren't necessarily clever people; they're just people with very specific skills.]

Perfect. I think that helps bring clarity to a lot of our questions. One of the comments you guys made over the summer, and then we heard it from you, I guess, on the last earnings call, was around the longer-term business model here as we move from a pandemic to an endemic phase. Clearly got a lot of focus on the street. And in particular, some of your comments around the potential for higher pricing. I think one of the things that people point to is both the optics of that as well as some of their experience with the flu market. Now this is absolutely different. But I was hoping you could maybe give us a little bit more depth on your thoughts here and around the potential to pursue higher pricing down the road?
