Prime Minister Trudeau and Canadian political establishment back Israeli attack on Iran

Canadian Prime Minister Justin #Trudeau has joined his imperialist partners in backing a direct Israeli #attack on #Iran in response to Tehran’s missile strike on Israeli military infrastructure Tuesday. Far from being the chief destabilizing force in the region, as Trudeau, #Canada’s establishment parties, and their #US imperialist ally claim, the Iranian regime was goaded into retaliating to a series of provocative attacks by #Israel over the last several weeks.

The United States and Israel stand on the verge of a direct attack on Iran, with the most far-reaching and catastrophic consequences for the Middle East and the whole world.

Using Iran’s attack on Israeli military infrastructure Tuesday as a pretext, the White House has effectively given Israel carte blanche to carry out an illegal attack against the second most populous country in the region (after Egypt).

“We’ll be discussing with the Israelis what they’re going to do, but all seven of us [referring to the G7 nations] agree that they have a right to respond,” Biden said Wednesday. Reuters commented in a news report, “[T]he US is not pressing Israel to refrain from retaliation.”

Eyewitnesses to Al-Akhbar: “The helicopters continue to arrive at the outskirts of Yaroun and Maroun al-Ras to evacuate the dead and wounded of the enemy soldiers who fell into the ambush of the resistance while trying to enter Lebanese territory from the settlement of Avivim”

Unconfirmed reports say that the number of dead and injured are the highest in any recent fighting and close to 80 special forces troops were killed or injured during the massive explosion and small arm attacks from close range.

Lebanon’s Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib tells CNN that Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah had agreed to a 21-day ceasefire just before he was assassinated by Israel.

The temporary ceasefire was called for by President Biden, President Macron and other allies during last week’s UNGA.

“He [Nasrallah] agreed, he agreed,” Habib told me in an interview on Tuesday.

🥀 Lebanese Minister of Health: "So far, Lebanon has mourned 1,974 martyrs, including 127 children and 261 women.

In addition to that, about 9,384 people have been injured since 8-October."

A bulk of the injuries are from the pager and radio attack, and the biggest bulk of deaths are are from airstrikes everywhere around Lebanon.

Prior to the expanded war starting about two weeks ago, the number of martyrs was mostly combatants. Civilian deaths spiked whene #Israel started to indiscriminately attack everywhere in #Lebanon.

The death toll before this war for the period of 11 months was just higher than 600, about 500 from #Hezbullah and the rest between #Amal movement and civilians.

An interesting read.

The fury of history: There can be no peace until there is regime change inside Iran

But it is #Iran, a country of 88.5 million and an ancient cluster of Persian civilisation (rather than many Arab countries, which are merely vague geographical expressions), that holds the key to the current regional war. Energy-rich Iran provides the money, the military training, the brilliant tactics and the dynamic ideology of revolutionary nihilism (which combines a radical Islam with an anti-Semitic fascism) that has allowed #Hamas and #Hezbollah to become what they are today. The older Arab-Israeli conflict over historical #Palestine was a conventional contest over states and territory. But the introduction of clerical Iran has given the struggle a tiers-mondiste quality, further infused with a millenarian religious call for the annihilation of an entire people.

It is Iran that struck #Israel on 7 October 2023, an event so dramatic and so bestial that it will be remembered like 9/11: a date so infamous that it becomes a concept. Of course, Iran did not do the murdering, the raping and the hostage-taking in southern Israel. Hamas and its operatives and supporters did that. Iranian leaders may not even have known about the exact timing of the event, or may even have been uncomfortable with its scope. But their long, total support of Hamas means their strategic fingerprints are all over the attack. Had Iran a different regime, there would likely have been no 7 October – no matter the anger and suffering of the Palestinians.
