#California’s mountains are too warm for some trees to survive. Inside these ‘zombie forests’

“I always say to my people when I’m working out there that what we do for Mother Nature is we give her a pedicure, a manicure; we even try to clean her up a little bit. But she’s going to the ball in the springtime; she’s going to put on her own dress. When you give her the opportunity, she knows how to dress herself up. That’s the whole difference between what the Native American did with the land and what the European American does to the land — is we put back. We give back.”

2024 Anniversary: The Indian Citizenship Act of 1924, (43 Stat. 253, enacted June 2, 1924) was an Act of the United States Congress that granted U.S. citizenship to the indigenous peoples of the United States. While the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution defines a citizen as any persons born in the United States and subject to its laws and jurisdiction, the amendment had previously been interpreted by the courts not to apply to Native peoples. — https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Citizenship_Act

What's the One Major American #City Founded by a #Woman?

Source: https://parade.com/256292/claudiagryvatzcopquin/whats-the-one-major-american-city-founded-by-a-woman/

Interestingly, the city of #Miami was founded by a woman—the only female founder of a major American city. In 1874, Julia #Tuttle, who hailed from #Cleveland, headed to Florida to visit her father, who lived in the area. Despite the mosquito-infested swamps, she liked what she saw.

#Map of U.S. with #native American #territory if they didn't break the #treaty.

map

The conclusion of the U.S. Indian Claims Commission in 1978 resulted in a map identical to this, which reflected the various claims before the commission and its courts. In some instances, the land marked here as "unceded" was not necessarily land that wasn't included by treaty, but in some cases was land that was promised and reserved for specific uses (i.e., hunting lands). In other cases, the map simply reflected the original territory of a certain #Tribe or #Tribes within which claims for uncompensated takings would be recognized. Anyone interested in reading the report and specifically the preface to the map should check it out here: https://narf.org/nill/documents/icc_final_report.pdf
