#Irish RTE reporter dropped his #phone and has some interesting contacts
So after a year or so, my Galaxy Fold 4 is starting to go, or rather the folding screen is. There's a protector on it meant to spread the force of folding the screen so it doesn't crease, and that's starting to separate from the actual screen. It's repairable, but that's a send out repair, if'n I had insurance, they'd likely send me a replacement phone so I wouldn't have to wait, but I don't have insurance, and sometimes the repaired phones don't last even this long, so... Yeah, need something else I guess. And it's not the only problem, it's just the newest and largest, we've been having some charging issues, a weird thing where I unlike the phone and get a copied to clipboard message, and that's when the phone will wake, sometimes it won't or it'll hang going to the home screen. Yeah, I'm not impressed, and then there's the amount of extra software and shear overload of features built into the phone, and while I don't hate it, I love the tablet mode, I'm not real impressed.
So, brand thoughts, I'm all ears, but here's what I got...
iPhone, nope, been using Android since 2.x, and iPhone is just different enough to drive me nuts. Sure, I could learn to use and like it I'm sure, but I prefer to just hit the ground running.
Google, I don't have much love for Alphabet, I'd have nothing to do with it, but that's not an option, but I'm certainly not buying one of their devices
Samsung, see above, software is something of an issue, they're still being stupid in this area, though it's not as big a deal
Motorola, this one is high on my list, I've had a few of their devices, and my opinion of them is the same as that of my Lenovo computers, they won't blow you away, you won't be singing their praises to the high hills, but you will get something that will work every time, just a solid very average device
Beyond those, who's out in the US? Hisense makes an e-Ink phone that I would love, but they aren't available here AFAIK. TCL was playing with an interesting screen that had many of the properties of e-ink in colour, but those seem to have gone away.
So, any recommendations from y'all?
Generative #AI could be #listening to your #phone #calls and #hijacking them with fake biometric #audio for #fraud or #manipulation purposes, according to new research published by Security Intelligence. In the wake of a Hong Kong fraud case that saw an employee transfer US$25 million in funds to five bank accounts after a virtual meeting with what turned out to be audio-video #deepfakes of senior management, the biometrics and digital identity world is on high alert, and the threats are growing more sophisticated by the day.
A blog post by Chenta Lee, chief architect of threat intelligence at IBM Security, breaks down how researchers from IBM X-Force successfully intercepted and covertly hijacked a live conversation by using LLM to understand the conversation and manipulate it for malicious purposes - without the speakers knowing it was happening.
"Alarmingly," writes Lee, "it was fairly easy to construct this highly intrusive capability, creating a significant concern about its use by an attacker driven by monetary incentives and limited to no lawful boundary."
