CRISTAL prepares to sparkle

image

CRISTAL satellite structure

The structure of the first Copernicus Sentinel CRISTAL satellite is now ready to be equipped with the hardware that will allow it to function in orbit. Then, engineers will be able to install the advanced instruments that will provide ‘crystal clear’ insights into environmental changes in the world’s remote icy regions.

Constraining #Ocean and Ice Shell Thickness on #Miranda from #Surface Geological Structures and Stress Modeling

Source: https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/PSJ/ad77d7

Images from the #Voyager 2 mission revealed the small Uranian #satellite Miranda to be a complex, dynamic world. This is exemplified by signs of recent geological activity, including an extensive fault system and the mysterious coronae. This has led to speculation that Miranda may have been tectonically active within the geologically recent past and could have hosted a subsurface #liquid water ocean at the time. In this work, we aim to constrain the thickness ranges for the ice shell and potential subsurface ocean on Miranda.

SCIENCE

ASTRONOMIE

A quotation from Tuchman, Barbara

Books are the carriers of civilization. Without books, history is silent, literature, dumb, science crippled, thought and speculation at a standstill. Without books, the development of civilization would have been impossible. The are engines of change (as the poet said), windows on the world, and lighthouses erected in the sea of time. They are companions, teachers, magicians, bankers of the treasures of the mind. Books are humanity in print.

Barbara W. Tuchman (1912-1989) American historian and author
“The Book,” Lecture, Library of Congress (1979-10-17)

Advanced space tech for disaster response with Smart-Connect

image

Artists impression of a synthetic aperture radar satellite over a wildfire

When disaster strikes, maintaining communication is critical. Yet, terrestrial (ground) networks are often compromised, leaving civilians stranded and first responders without access to vital information. Limited bandwidth can severely delay crisis management efforts, potentially costing lives. Recent events around the world, including devastating floods and wildfires, underscore the increasing relevance and urgency for advanced disaster response technology.

Prof. #RobertTemple | A New #Science of #Heaven | Origins Conference
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AbTU9MBre0

The talk begins with an update on #Esna #Temple Project in #Egypt which Robert has been funding. In the main part of the talk Robert shares new knowledge from the most recent advances in a little-known area of science and how this matches many accounts surviving down the ages from #mystics, meditators, people who have survived near-death experiences, inspired sages and shamans, and experiences from dreams and trance states. Robert takes the view that it is reasonable to be sceptical, but can understand how these altered states may have been used in the past to access awareness of the elusive and apparently immaterial ‘Other World’ by shamans and seers over the millennia. Scientific progress is now sufficiently advanced to enable a world of the spirit to be described and explained in a rigorous fashion for the first time. The advances made in the plasma physics in recent years provides a mathematical and physical basis to describe the #soul, or #spirit. These advances make it possible to understand ghosts, for complex plasmas can pass through walls and emerge the same on the other side (Indeed, they can pass through each other and survive intact as well). The ‘Other World’ is material, but it is a different kind of #matter.

Prof. Temple is author of a dozen challenging and provocative books, commencing with the international best-seller, The Sirius Mystery. His books include The Sphinx Mystery, Netherworld, The Crystal Sun, and The Genius of China. He is visiting Professor of the History and Philosophy of Science at Tsinghua University in Beijing, and previously held a similar position at an American university. For many years he was a science writer for the Sunday Times, the Guardian, and writer for Time-Life, Nature and The New Scientist. He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, and has been a member of the Egypt Exploration Society since the 1970s. With his wife, Olivia, he is co-author and translator of the first complete English version of Aesop’s Fables. He has done archaeometric dating work and exploration of closed sites in Egypt and his research into historical accounts of the Sphinx is the first comprehensive survey ever undertaken. http://www.robert-temple.com

Europe says farewell to eclipse-making Proba-3

image

Proba-3 Coronagraph being prepared for shipping

ESA’s solar eclipse-making Proba-3 mission is about to leave Europe, to head to its launch site in India. The mission’s two spacecraft – which will manoeuvre precisely in Earth orbit so that one casts a shadow onto the other – have departed the facilities of Redwire Space in Kruibeke, Belgium. The pair will be flown to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, near Chennai, for the launch campaign to begin.
