The Global South is Lost

One unanticipated outcome of the recent flareup in the #MiddleEast is that it appears to have put the final nail in the coffin of the #ClownWorldOrder by making it clear that the so-called “rules-based order” does not actually have any genuine principles or rules, thereby ensuring widespread global preference for the sovereign nations of the #Multipolarity over the #Imperial #USA and its occupied #satrapies.

Attempts by the #US and its allies to “paint #Moscow as a global pariah” have been “poisoned” by the rush to support Israeli retaliation against #Hamas in #Gaza, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday, citing more than a dozen officials.

“We have definitely lost the battle in the Global South,” one senior #G7 diplomat was quoted as saying. “All the work we have done with the Global South [over Ukraine] has been lost… Forget about rules, forget about world order. They won’t ever listen to us again.”

“What we said about #Ukraine has to apply to #Gaza. Otherwise we lose all our credibility,” the official added. “The Brazilians, the South Africans, the Indonesians: why should they ever believe what we say about human rights?”

West ‘lost’ Global South over Israel, 18 October 2023

Now, this is apparently shocking news to the inhabitants of #ClownWorld as well as its rulers, but it was always inevitable. The “Israel exception” to decades of baseless assertions about #democracy and #human-rights and respect for #indigenous peoples was never going to survive the #Internet anyhow, nor was “the plight of the poor, oppressed #Jewish people who never did nothing bad to nobody” ever going to cut any ice with anyone but high-trust, soft-hearted ignoramuses with no sense of #history.

And it’s a particularly bad look for #Israel to be observed to be “defending itself” by continuously #expanding its #territory. Considering that a significant percentage of the #GlobalSouth has historical experience with #violent #colonization of its ancestral lands, it should not be much of a surprise that there is a natural tendency for them to instinctively side with the #Palestinians. Indeed, many #Jews supported the #blacks in #SouthAfrica on much flimsier historical claims than those possessed by the Palestinians.

But as the Financial Times points out, it is the #juxtaposition of #ClownWorld’s position on the #Russia-Ukraine situation with the #Israel-Palestinian situation that has probably been the most harmful. Ukraine’s #crimes against the #Russians in the #Donbass, and the 14,400 Russians killed there between 2014 and 2022, far exceed the various crimes committed by Hamas in the same timeframe, and yet the #global #media has spent the last 19 months decrying Russian actions that have been considerably more restrained than the total #ethnic #cleansing of the Palestinians now being threatened all over social media in response to a single Hamas raid.

Clown World is dying. One hopes the #GreatPowers of the Multipolarity will use their power and influence in a more circumspect and generally beneficial manner once it is gone.

Important social media defamation ruling in South Africa regarding alleging without having valid evidence

Side view of a bus, with some power station smoke stacks in the background, and clear blue sky
“Believing that one pursues a worthy cause in the public interest, does not justify publishing false statements about another party,” acting Judge Berry wrote in his ruling last week.

“Believing that one pursues a worthy cause in the public interest, does not justify publishing false statements about another party … the publication of defamatory statements are prima facie [at first sight] wrongful.”

While courts should be slow in granting final interdicts silencing people, such an interdict would not prevent Msabe from publishing statements that were true and in the public interest. It would only prevent him from making false statements, the judge said.

Basically, it is saying anyone in South Africa has the right to free speech and opinions, but then opinions should be framed as such, and if you’re going to allege that any individual or company has committed a crime, you should provide the contextual evidence with that claim. You cannot allege without any context or by providing false evidence. There is nothing new about this really, and it applies to any utterance, and is nothing unique to social media.

Both parties are protected by law: If the allegation is made with context and valid (in good faith) evidence, the poster would be protected. The targeted individual or company, though, also has a right to protection if that evidence is false.

I don’t know the actual merits of this case (where the photo of the worn tyre came from) but a post is judged by what is published, as that is how the public themselves perceive the post (only on what they read).

It’s also a warning to anyone in South Africa to check before just reposting information that may be false, or even worse, when it is calculated misinformation. Social media is not something separate from normal life – you are your own newspaper editor, and publishing a public post is a public utterance, and not a private conversation.

I’m just hoping this gets applied to politicians as well, outside of parliament!

Yoh Vote is an app that helps South African youth discover their ideal political partner in a fun and ‘dating-like’ way

Title text saying It's time to use Yoh Vote (shows an X inside a square box) voting, for South African youth
In the last national election, over 30 percent of voters didn’t participate, indicating a concerning lack of engagement. Many young people, disheartened by the belief that their vote won’t matter, have opted out of the system. Yoh, Vote is here to change that mindset and rekindle the fire of political participation.

They understand that the overwhelming flood of information and jargon can be off-putting (as well as all the political double-speak). That’s why they’re creating a fresh and non-partisan platform. Yoh Vote aims to simplify the process of engaging with political parties and understanding their standpoints, making it easier for young South Africans to make informed decisions about the future of their nation.

Introducing Yoh Vote, a dynamic initiative born from the passion of young South Africans who firmly believe in the potential of their country. They aim to empower every citizen with the right and responsibility to be politically informed and engaged in our hard-fought democracy.

It’s not to be confused with the US app called Yo Vote! I heard about this app from an interview with the co-founder by Newzroom Afrika at https://youtu.be/zYPZcqGz9fI?si=G_Hl8vv1phAKtdkn. You’d think politicians, or the IEC, would have come up with a solution like this already, but it goes to show how far-removed politics is from the youth. This initiative is a student-led team of 6 individuals that are seeking to encourage voter registration and youth involvement in South African politics.

The app is web based, so the matchmaking can be done with any desktop computer or mobile browser by just visiting the page linked below. I took the test myself and it actually aligned with what I had last voted, but you may be surprised to get a different outcome from what you thought your alignment may be.

Starlink launching cellphone “towers” in space: LTE connectivity and requiring no special apps or changes to hardware or firmware

Title of diagram says A Cellphone Tower in Space, and shows an ordinary unmodified phone connecting to a Starlink satellite, which in turn connects down to Starlink ground network, which connects to a Partner Operator Network, and out to their normal cellular network for talk, text and data service.
To enable connectivity with regular phones, Starlink will fit some of its satellites with advanced eNodeB modems that act like a cellphone tower in space.

Starlink said this would allow for network integration similar to a standard roaming partner.

For South Africa, with its strict Black Economic Empowerment requirements, it has so far meant no Starlink access unless there is a local BEE ownership. But this new service may “fly” as it would be an upstream service rendered through the local cellular providers (not directly to end consumers), much like any roaming cellular partner.

Because this would work with any cellphone, it will be even more important for under serviced areas, and those travelling in more remote rural areas.

The plan is to launch texting services in 2024, followed by voice and data connectivity in 2025.

Very interesting too, to see IoT support planned from 2025.

'Growing from a slur about impoverished whites (taken from the stereotype of driving the inexpensive, late model Ford Zephyr), zef style appropriates the images of white poverty as a mock display of apartheid attitudes and politics. This choice of portrayal latently indicates not only marginal whiteness but their transculturation resulting from cohabitation with other marginalized population.' ᴢ. Amanda Du Preez [link above].
