#Cuba is teaching the world lessons in #sustainability

Cuba is showing resilience and plenty of lessons to learn about tough times, gardening and humanitarianism — and it all starts with food security.

Along with the realization that climate change will affect the planet through rising sea levels, #flooding, #fires, #droughts, #hurricanes, #tornadoes and irregular wind patterns also comes the realization that food security will need to be a priority. Innovative models of #agriculture will need to be practiced for other reasons as well.

The sudden #coronavirus pandemic alert is another strong reminder that food security and sustainability help create a more resilient society all round. For now, Canadians are largely worried about limiting the spread of the #virus, or getting home safely from other countries. As days of isolation turn into weeks, remote work or #unemployment becomes a reality for most, and spring arrives, we may soon wonder why we have not turned our back- and front-yards into food gardens sooner.

Indian Elephant in Discussion

Kerala: India temple replaces elephant with robot for rituals.
enter image description here

It became history when a mechanical elephant was dedicated to the deity in Kallettumkara Irinjadappilly Sree Krishna Temple to perform rituals.

However, elephant organizations have objected to the use of such robotic elephants for festivals. These organizations (aana premi sangam) have warned that if percussion artists participate in festivals with robotic elephants, they will not be able to perform in other festivals where artists are determined by them.
The Manakkodi Aanapremi Sangam points out that if mechanical elephants are used, the elephants themselves will disappear from festival celebrations, along with rituals, and the elephant workers will become jobless.

What do you think as an environmentalist about this issue ?

the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion's Peace Park
a bit more about the Stupa's history and "but why"

"December 2021: Bendigo’s Great Stupa of Universal Compassion has made further progress with the installation of a powerhouse battery power convertor. The converter was specifically made for the Great Stupa’s lights in partnership with Arvio Australia, which specialises in sustainable energy solutions."

#Waterboxx plant cocoon was first used in #Kazakhstan recently. For decades, the average annual temperature in Kazakhstan has been growing rapidly. Weather conditions in the country are becoming more extreme: more and more winds, droughts and dust storms. As a result, the Southern Balkhash region has suffered from large-scale forest fires and lack of water in the Ili River and Lake Balkhash. https://dknews.kz/.../238424-vosstanovlenie-lesa-v...
The next stage is the planting of 12,400 seedlings of turanga, sucker and willow. Specialists conduct a series of experiments with different technologies to increase the survival rate of seedlings in this arid climate. The #Waterboxx plant cocoon was used; storing 15 liters of water it's equipped with a system for collecting condensate and precipitation. The device will provide the seedling with the necessary amount of water for the development of the root system.

I'm not generally one to post about #technology and #sustainability, but this looks interesting, and potentially useful.

New Solar Panels Allow Farmers to See the Light

A recent study from the University of California, Davis, shows how #farmers may soon be able to harvest #crops and #energy together, on common ground. Researchers concluded that bands within the visible light spectrum can be filtered and harnessed separately—blue lightwaves to generate #solar #power and red lightwaves to grow fruits and vegetables—to make maximum use of farmland, all while lowering heat stress and reducing crop waste.

Researchers create smaller, cheaper flow batteries for clean energy

Flow batteries offer a solution. Electrolytes flow through electrochemical cells from storage tanks in this rechargeable battery. The existing flow battery technologies cost more than $200/kilowatt hour and are too expensive for practical application, but engineers have now developed a more compact flow battery cell configuration that reduces the size of the cell by 75%, and correspondingly reduces the size and cost of the entire flow battery. The work could revolutionize how everything from major commercial buildings to residential homes are powered.

Lithium-sulfur batteries are one step closer to powering the future

A research team has built and tested a new interlayer to prevent dissolution of the sulfur cathode in lithium-sulfur batteries. This new interlayer increases Li-S cell capacity and maintains it over hundreds of cycles.
