#First Ever #Photo of a #Snow #Leopard Under a #Starry #Sky
It takes a special kind of patience to search for a ghost. It is unlikely you will find one, but doubt means quitting, so you keep looking.

This is the art of tracking snow leopards. Morup Namgail learned it early. He was 5 when he first saw one in his remote home village of Uley in Ladakh, India. The area teems with wildlife – heaven for aspiring photographers like Morup and his brother Stanzin. These large cats, locally referred to as shan, were immortalised in the BBC series Planet Earth II thanks in large part to their father, Norboo, who tracked them for the crew.

Ladakh was just becoming famous for sightings – then the pandemic shut everything down. That is when the brothers vowed to photograph something no one had before: a snow leopard under a starry night sky. They hoped the image would highlight the beauty of this mountainous region and its apex predator, thereby spurring efforts to protect both. This is a place warming at double the global rate, threatening the landscape and its wildlife. If the outside world could only see what was at stake, the brothers believed it would influence the government to act.

They spent months blanketing the area with cameras. But halfway through the project, Stanzin died of a heart condition. Hard as it was, Morup pressed on alone … and succeeded.

The Book of The Way, Day by Day
Saturday, 4 November, 2023 | 77

As it acts in the world, the Tao
is like the bending of a bow.
The top is bent downward;
the bottom is bent up.
It adjusts excess and deficiency
so that there is perfect balance.
It takes from what is too much
and give to what isn't enough.

Those who try to control,
who use force to protect their power,
go against the direction of the Tao.
They take from those who don't have enough
and give to those who have far too much.

The Master can keep giving
because there is no end to her wealth.
She acts without expectation,
succeeds without taking credit,
and doesn't think that she is better
than anyone else.

A #camel reacts before being #sacrificed in honor of those who died during the revolution overthrowing Moammar #Gaddafi, during a gathering at the main square in #Tripoli, #Libya on Sept. 29, 2011.

#Animal sacrifice is older than #history. #Human #beings have #slaughtered #birds and #livestock throughout the ages in attempt to propitiate the #gods—to alter fate, to enhance fortune, to pay for sins.

One of the great hymns of the #Rigveda is that of the #Horse #Sacrifice, which only a king can perform. The rituals continue to this day, as the photographs in this collection show: in the #Muslim and #Hindu worlds, as well as in #Judaism.

The #first #murder related in the #bible stems from jealousy over sacrifice. #Cain’s sacrifice of vegetables did not please God as much as his brother’s sacrifice of animals—and so Cain slew #Abel.

Of the #world’s great #faiths, #only #Buddhism and #Daoism #eschew #rituals of animal sacrifice, indeed, the taking of any life. Indeed, according to legend, one of the #Buddha’s previous #incarnations gave up his #life to #feed a #hungry #tiger.

The various #Christian #sects and denominations very #rarely #perform animal #sacrifices.

But the very Catholic societies of #Spain and #Latin-America still hold #bullfights, which are descended from pagan animal sacrifices. And, of course, at the heart of #Christianity is a #sacrament that is essentially a human sacrifice.

Solar activity in the first #crop #circle of the 2023 season

It's May 28th, today, and usually on a #Sunday, as most crop circles tend to appear, in one of the many patterns I've already identified around here. It was in the field of Broad Hinton, Bassett, #Wiltshire. A solar symbol, no doubt, a stylized hexagonal shape, in a shape that resembles a six-armed engine propeller or even sword blades. A solar symbol for sure, perhaps signaling important solar events for the next few days.
Intense solar winds, giving the appearance of a six-bladed fan.

#StCiarán of #Saighir is depicted in a window in #StBrendan's #Church, Birr, Co #Offaly. Picture by Andreas Franz Borchert
#St #Ciarán of Saighir
enter image description here
Reputed to have been the #first saint #born in #reland, #Ciarán was a native of #CapeClear #Island off the #coast of #Cork.

He became the bishop of Saighir (Seir-Kieran) in the foothills of the #SlieveBloom #mountains in modern-day Co Offaly and remains the patron saint of the Diocese of #Ossory.

Lives of the saint relate #how he #lived in a #forest surrounded by #animals and wearing nothing but skins.

This corresponds to the image of him as a western John the Baptist, and thus like St Ibar, a precursor of the national apostle.
