Sexual harassment probe rocks College of Europe – POLITICO

BRUGES, Belgium — The College of Europe in Bruges, a training ground for top European Union officials, is investigating one of its professors over allegations of sexual harassment brought by one of his female students.

After the College opened the probe into the professor’s behavior, a group of six former college staff and students sent a letter to Federica Mogherini, the college rector and the former EU foreign policy chief, calling for his dismissal after several allegations of sexual harassment over the past years.

POLITICO contacted all the parties involved and spoke to more than 20 current and former College students and staff. All were granted anonymity to speak candidly about a powerful professor with deep connections to EU politics. POLITICO is not naming the professor for now.

Yeah, it's problematic when those persons have the power to ruin your career and you have a high risk if you speak up against

Citation cartels help some mathematicians—and their universities—climb the rankings | Science | AAAS

Widespread citation manipulation has led entire field of math to be excluded from influential list of top researchers

The key problem is still using citation count as measurement for giving grants etc

Scientists paid large publishers over $1 billion in four years to have their studies published with open access | Science | EL PAÍS English

Stefanie Haustein considers it “obscene” that the profit margins of the main publishers “reach between 30% and 40%, well above most industries.” The researcher gives the example of the Dutch giant Elsevier, which last year published 600,000 studies, a quarter of which were open access. Elsevier’s annual income was $3.5 billion, with $1.3 billion in profit, according to its 2022 accounts. “This means that for every $1,000 that the academic community spends on publishing in Elsevier, about $400 go into the pockets of its shareholders,” Haustein explains.

The gaming of citation and authorship in academic journals: a warning from medicine - Stuart Macdonald, 2023

Many authors in medicine have made no meaningful contribution to the article that bears their names, and those who have contributed most are often not named as authors. Author slots are openly bought and sold. The problem is magnified by the academic publishing industry and by academic institutions, pleased to pretend that peer review is safeguarding scholarship

Professor’s Dismissal for Showing Image of Prophet Muhammad Spurs Debate Around Academic Freedom – ARTnews.com

As reported by The Oracle, who obtained a video recording of the class, the professor provided a two-minute warning to the class before its display, acknowledging that observant Muslim students may opt not to view the material for religious reasons. Varying beliefs within Islam consider visual representations of the Prophet Muhammad as forbidden. The professor provided explanation before showing the material, The Oracle reported.

“I am showing you this image for a reason, and that is that there is this common thinking that Islam completely forbids, outright, any figurative depictions or any depictions of holy personages,” the professor said. “While many Islamic cultures do strongly frown on this practice, I would like to remind you there is no one, monothetic Islamic culture.”

Once every three years...

You may have heard of Van Halen's aversion to brown M&Ms and perhaps you also know the story behind it. I'm actually doing something similar, even though I'm not doing Rock concerts.

I've always wondered if any of our students would actually read the syllabus we have to enter into the administrative system for each of our courses each semester. It's a really painful activity, because this poor excuse of an administrative system was designed with user inconvenience in mind.

So a few years back I wrote at one place in a syllabus for a 3rd-year course: "You can get a xxx if you come to my office and tell me yyy. Only one is available." I think it was three (or four?) years ago that someone claimed that prize. I can't remember what it was, it was small, related to Germany and free.

Then nothing for at least two years, so imagine my surprise when on Tuesday two girls approached me and said "Dresden" - the password for fridge magnets with a view of Dresden. They only expected one, because they were in the same group, but since nobody in the other group had claimed theirs, I gave them both.

So now I know for sure that about every three years up to two students may actually read the materials we have to put on display. Interesting statistics for a potential discussion with academic affairs...

And I need something new for next year...

This series explores how #Israeli #academic institutions uphold state structures of #colonialism and #apartheid, drawing examples from seven different Israeli accredited #Universities. In 2004, the #Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of #Israel (PACBI) called for a boycott of Israeli academic institutions. Academic #boycott is one tactic of #solidarity with Palestinian #academics and students who are denied fundamental rights under Israeli apartheid, including the right to #education.
