But that's the whole point of Israel's moves: Palestinians leave and don't come back, ever.

Just found out about a great initiative to help Palestinian students and scholars at risk by finding them positions in Canada: https://pssar.ca/.Canadian professors can sign up to recruit students.

Mmm, there's much I agree with here, and some parts I strongly dispute.

I can't speak to the women in science aspect so I'll just assume it's all true and therefore obviously in need of a complete overhaul.

The grant system is indeed stupid. Applications that take a long time to prepare, even longer to evaluate, and then come back with glowing reports that say, "but this just isn't a priority for us", yeah, that's a stupid system. So is the academic career path of being expected to do (at a typical minimum) two postdocs in widely-separated locations before settling on a permanent position. The less said about publish-or-perish, the better, it's a daft way to evaluate performance, if even such a thing is possible at the forefront of knowledge. All this I've ranted about myself, ad nauseum.

But as to the claims about having undermined an entire discipline, nah, or most academic papers being bullshit... nah. At least to to any great degree beyond what's inevitable if you're doing your job properly, which is to say... investigating the forefront of knowledge, where no-one can tell you if you're right or wrong because no-one else knows. The old quote that it wouldn't be research if you knew what you were doing is emphatically true. You can't avoid mistakes in such a process; I've never seen Sabine ever clearly explain what she thinks everyone is doing that's so wrong in a way that's presumably different from the necessary method of progress that includes these inevitable mistakes.

Aah, good old student days

Back when it was t'was a good, pro-social habit to have a pint or two with the professors and lecturers on Friday early afternoon in the Graffton Arms pub, off Oxford Rd.

You'd interrupt your library time in exchange for chat, smalltalk, crisps or even a light pub meal, and sound advice from old farts towering figures in the field, right at the kempt heart of the Manchester School of Ethnomethodology.

And productive at that, back at the library the next paragraphs practically wrote themselves. Oh dear, of course they did. 🍺😄

Thank you Wes, Dave, Dave, Rod, Dave and Liz et al for repeatedly expanding my horizon and, more than two decades later, for allowing me this #throwbackthursday mood.

#Graph depicting the correlative #trend between number of homicides per 100k of population & mean national #IQ, with Pearson correlation coefficient, for 241 countries & dependencies, 2023.

The #graph shows that as the mean national IQ goes up, the number of homicides per 100k of #population goes down, with a strong correlation of 0.57. This suggests to me that the more #intelligent a population is, the less inclined to commit #homicide it is.

If you can't inquire into the veracity of it, or deny it, it's not history, it's dogma or propaganda.

A proposition that's true will withstand critical scrutiny; a proposition that's false, but presented as true, requires protection.

A prison sentence for denying an historical narrative is tyrannical & engenders resentment.

Resignation — She has persistently fought against the theft of research and for more research freedom. First with the 'Please don’t steal my work' campaign and later with the 'Set research free' campaign, both of which received widespread support from Danish researchers. Now Maria Toft has resigned and will leave the University of Copenhagen. And she is happy to slam the door on her way out.

Vivek Chibber’s The Class Matrix should give the #Left real confidence in class #analysis and class #politics. Over the span of a brief number of pages, it confronts the driving developments within social #science over the past half-century while also seeking to resuscitate the theories outlined in classical #Marxism with crucial modifications. It does all of this with a precision and thoughtfulness that all serious social analysis should aspire to.
Chibber’s interventions center around three points. First, a defense of a materialist conception of #class structure against a host of critics both within and outside the Marxist tradition; second, a reconceptualization of the process of class formation based on the internally generated macro-dynamics of the capitalist class structure; and finally, the conceptual demotion of hegemony—the #NewLeft’s favorite plaything—below the far more prevalent phenomena of resignation in explaining the stability of #capitalism.
These contributions provide the essential theoretical foundation from which any meaningful progressive politics must proceed. It’s for this reason that The Class Matrix’s placement within the arena of academic debate feels inappropriate, maybe even wasted on individuals with institutional incentives to disregard it. The book’s academic placement makes some sense given the Left’s persistent relegation to #academia—although this is a proportionally diminishing share of the #Left as a whole. It’s unfortunate then that the location of the Left within the middle class receives painfully little treatment by Chibber. In a moment when the ramifications of this are increasingly relevant and debate has been rekindled around terms like “the PMC,” this seems to be a missed opportunity in an otherwise critical #book for the Left.

This "student essay" was written by an AI Transformer program

I gave it a prompt "The construct of learning styles is problematic because " and it generated the rest, including the headings and references. AI Transformer technology will disrupt education. Here's how. The most obvious disruption is students submitting assignments generated by AI. That's already happening. Anyone can sign up for an account with the GPT-3 Transformer then go to its "Playground", type the opening words of an assignment, press Submit and let it do the rest. ...

Essay-writing services have been a pox on university educators for decades. Artificially-generated texts raise that to the next level (though promise to disrupt at least some of the incumbents. Perhaps the oral defence will return to fashion.

This also makes the sponsor spot touting AI to solve previously unsolveable problems at business scale ... somewhat more than vaguely dystopian. And wonder at the integrity of any written communications.

Perhaps even this one.
