A giant crawling #brain: the jaw-dropping world of #termites

source: https://www.theguardian.com/news/2018/sep/18/a-giant-crawling-brain-the-jaw-dropping-world-of-termites

Back in the 1930s, the other Marais didn’t write a #termite #science book, but a book about how humans could understand termites – as a #bug, a #body, a #soul, a force on the #landscape. Looking at termites this way changed how I see the #world, science, the #future and myself.

A quotation from Russell, Bertrand

To understand the actual world as it is, not as we should wish it to be, is the beginning of wisdom.

Information that was fact in the past has since transpired to be falsehood in the present. Some of today's facts will be the falsehoods of the future. A fact is very strong evidence that supports a particular assertion, interpretation or observation logically & consistent with the current schema of understanding.

Facts can be true & can be false but truth is always true. Many facts of the past were considered true by the people of the past, but have since transpired to be completely or partially false. We must always keep in mind the epistemological limitations of knowledge and the influence of time on information deemed factual.

The techniques for stopping holy wars, or at least limiting their damage, are pretty much the same everywhere. Even if you are positive your side is right, try to find some way to express #sympathy and #understanding for the points the other side is making. Often the problem in a holy war is that because each side has built its walls as high as possible, and made it clear that any other #opinion is sheer foolishness, the act of surrendering or changing one's mind becomes psychologically unbearable: it would be an admission not just of being wrong, but of having been certain and still being wrong. The way you can make this admission palatable for the other side is to express some uncertainty yourself - precisely by showing that you understand the #arguments they are making and find them at least sensible, if not finally persuasive. Make a gesture that provides #space for a #reciprocal gesture, and usually the situation will improve. You are no more or less likely to get the technical result you wanted, but at least you can avoid unnecessary collateral damage to the project's morale.

one of my bestestest frens sent me some precious words; they touch my soul like nothing since long. as I have been incarnated in Russia at least one time (I cry over it to not be a Russian soul). and only one who knows the feeling to be Russian or has at least a "Russian" soul can understand this fact... anyways, here's the text:

The West doesn’t understand the Russian conception of Motherland.

We cannot be defeated. Because we have a difference between the Motherland and the state, which the West will not understand.

The Russian word «Родина» (that is translated here as Motherland) is associated with the words “genus”, “kin”, “people” (all containing the Russian root «род»). The Motherland is what we love. But the state…we have problems with the state all the time.

The state has been mocking the Motherland for many years. But when trouble comes, the Motherland forgives the state and stands up for it.

Therefore, the enemy cannot defeat us: he attacks the state, but the response comes from the Motherland. He doesn’t know that our Motherland is on duty around the corner.

Hitler learned all the roads of our country from maps. He came – and the Motherland had no roads.

Napoleon decided to liberate the Russian state from serfdom. Did you ask the Motherland? The Motherland’s peasants drove him back to Paris.

We and the West will never understand each other, because we feel the world differently.
