Stop jailing climate truth tellers!

This sentence is a gut-punch for us all. #Peaceful climate activists will spend the next four to five years in jail.

Why? For leading a video call about a #protest against the last government’s failure to act on climate change and its plans to “max out” on #oil and #gas.

This is the tragic result of repressive #Tory laws which treat peaceful climate protesters as violent offenders.
- Activists can now be #jailed for up to ten years!
- Meanwhile, big #polluters destroy our planet with impunity.

‘His rhetoric has made Tesla toxic’: is Elon Musk driving away his target market?

Elon #Musk has long flirted with #rightwing politics, and delights in pushing an image of himself as a contrarian showman. Yet in recent months the billionaire’s political allegiances have started to raise a question for Tesla, the company that he built into the world’s largest electric carmaker: just how far can he go before customers start to abandon his products?

The German pharmacy chain Rossmann was one of the first to put its head above the parapet this week. The family-owned company announced that it would not add to the 34 #Teslas in its company fleet because of Musk’s endorsement of Donald #Trump for US president.

Trump has repeatedly called #ClimateChange a hoax,” wrote Raoul Roßmann, a spokesperson for Rossmann. “This attitude is in stark contrast to Tesla’s mission to contribute to environmental protection through the production of electric cars.”

‘Massive #disinformation campaign’ is slowing global #transition to #green #energy

UN says a global ‘backlash’ against climate action is being stoked by fossil fuel companies

Fossil fuel companies are running “a massive mis- and disinformation campaign” so that countries will slow down the adoption of renewable energy and the speed with which they “transition away” from a carbon-intensive economy, the UN has said.

Selwin Hart, the assistant secretary general of the UN, said that talk of a global “backlash” against climate action was being stoked by the fossil fuel industry, in an effort to persuade world leaders to delay emissions-cutting policies. The perception among many political observers of a rejection of climate policies was a result of this campaign, rather than reflecting the reality of what people think, he added.

“There is this prevailing narrative – and a lot of it is being pushed by the fossil fuel industry and their enablers – that climate action is too difficult, it’s too expensive,” he said. “It is absolutely critical that leaders, and all of us, push back and explain to people the value of climate action, but also the consequences of climate inaction.”

He contrasted the perception of a backlash with the findings of the biggest poll ever conducted on the climate, which found clear majorities of people around the world supporting measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The survey found 72% of people wanted a “quick transition” away from fossil fuels, including majorities in the countries that produce the most coal, oil and gas.

Four key pillars of the global climate are melting in the heat trapped by rising fossil fuel emissions, a new study has found.

The relatively stable climate that nurtured human civilization depends in large part on these structures: the ice sheets of Greenland and West Antarctica, the Amazon rainforest and the Atlantic currents that warm Europe.

As Europe Heats Up, Silencing Climate Activists is Emerging as a Troubling Trend | Human Rights Watch

https://www.hrw.org/news/2024/07/22/europe-heats-silencing-climate-activists-emerging-troubling-trend

No major emitter country has decarbonised enough to meet the 2015 Paris climate agreement goals.

In response, climate activists are using protests, campaigning and civil disobedience to try to focus public debate and spur urgent state action on phasing out of fossil fuels and protecting carbon sinks like forests.

In turn, some European states have reacted with heavy-handed policing, and by effectively criminalising such activism, seeking to dissolve groups, imposing restrictions on protests, and conducting smear campaigns. This creates serious risks to environmental activism and civil society as a whole and undercuts vital efforts to address the climate crisis.

"While many in the United States are focused on the political drama of recent weeks, our precious planet continues to burn up. We just recorded the hottest day ever recorded on earth in the 40 years such data has been collected...The hard truth is that oil and gas companies simply have no incentive to slow down.
