For years, people involved in cryptocurrencies, whether in companies providing products and services or groups and individuals heavily promoting them, have waved away criticism. It was only a few bad actors. Things would prove themselves out. Those who didn’t jump in would be shown as losers.
Given the number of outrageous outcomes and events over the last few years, it’s time enough to question whether the whole idea of a completely decentralized digital form of exchange is sensible. It isn’t currency in the classical sense of the characteristics it needs. As an investment, it’s been wild speculation. And some of the people in charge of important mechanisms (taunting the claim of decentralization) have proven themselves untrustworthy.

Thus, a #miner who wishes to replace the last block on the #blockchain, can do so by #mining a new #block of its own which has a #timestamp which is low enough to increase the block’s mining difficulty. This can be useful, for example, in cases where this last block has high paying transactions, or in order to double-spend a transaction contained within the block. Another possibility is for an attacker to preemptively mine blocks with such false timestamps, in order to make sure they win in case of ties with other blocks which might be mined concurrently, or which might’ve been mined in the recent past but haven’t reached the attacker yet.

#Ethereum miners spent $15 billion on GPUs in the last two years
But now with its value tanking, many cryptoinvestors have found themselves unable to recoup the losses from spending so much money on GPUs and other parts. One such story, as outlined in the Bloomberg article, has one man who invested $30,000 in #cryptomining #hardware in mid-2021 but has only made about $5,000 so far through crypto.
That’s not even considering the environmental impact of all this mining, as the level of #carbon #emissions has always been a major #problem with cryptocurrencies. And it could be argued that between the waste of the GPUs purchased for #mining coupled with the environmental #damage, the value of Ethereum alone declining so steeply has made this all for nothing.

- Bored Apes and the like - in reality are just links to public hosted images the buyer does not own
- Click-Wrap Agreements - an NFT is equivalent to an hyperlink and you can't own an hyperlink
- Smart Contracts - are programs and not necessarily real, valid contracts. They cannot be enforced
- Copyrights - NTFs do not replace the copyright law and do not give the buyer copyright right, just a license to use something which might change at any time!
- Art created by artificial intelligence - cannot be copyrighted as law says only humans can create "art", another extra reason Bored Apes and the like are not art and cannot be protected by law
- NFTs - are a market manipulation to sell fake art by creating artificial scarcity in the market and people who buy them are getting nothing but a limited license, there is absolutely no consumer protection
- IPFS - makes the scam worse as the destination resource of those ipfs links embedded in NFTs smart contracts can change at any time
Conclusion: a wise buyer should not invest in non-fungible tokens.

Just in case anybody is wondering: No, the UNHCR has not sent you an email asking for donations in Bitcoin or Ethereum.
From what I can see neither of the addresses has had any transactions yet, so hopefully that means nobody is falling for the scam. Also the email my honeypot account received originates from the mailserver at shartley.net, which does not seem to be related to the UN or UNHCR at all.
