Permaculture

I watched a brief video yesterday explaining permaculture (permanent agriculture). It was interesting but quite limited as it was fundamentally an ad for the presenter's book on permaculture.
I'll not be buying the book but I may well investigate permaculture a little further.
Just by the by, I shan't buy it because my age related enfeeblement means an hour in the garden leaves me worn out and it would take many hours to achieve the results that appear in the small garden in the video.
That's my exculpation taken care of :)

Trying a simple abd lazy compost solution..

Had a 1m pipe I was planning to use for hydroponics that I gave up and decided to try a lazy man's compost solution.

Made a lot of holes in the first 20cm of it and pushed it into a pot I used to have a tomato plant in. Placed some mints around it and put a small pot on top to work as the cover.

Whenever I have some #vegetables left over, I put them in the pipe and I'm expecting to have good compost in it by the summer as the worms in the pot can go in an out of the holes, eating the vegetable and turn it to fertilizer.

At the same time, I am going to have unlimited minteto have for tea or salad.
I may cover and paint the pipe, or emayeb cover ot with some wood I saved from orange boxes.

Sorry not a very good picture, but I think I have managed to cross pollinate my Habanero and Serrano peppers.

I have a hydroponic set-up in the dining room by the window since 2021, it is pretty big with 3 peppers and one flower plants.

The only problem os that is have to hand pollinate it.

I usually use a dedicated qtils for each plant, but I think I used one on the #habanero plant on the #balcony and suddenly I have a habanero looking pepper on my indoor #Serranoe hydroponic pepper plant.

It will be interesting to see how it grows and how spicy ot will get.

This is a plant that started a couple of month ago after the other cucumber plant died. I'm not sure if it's the same plant or the second seed I planted in there.

But it's getting bigger every day, now it is over 2m tall and has lots of flowers. And to my surprise, quiet a few cucumbers as well.

I just hope it stays alive and produces until my kids come for the visit during the holidays.

Found an uninvited guest on my Iranian basil plant. Have to look for others because it's my only surviving plants from the summer

(It's called Reyhan, ریحان it's a special, very aromatic type of basil used in west Asia, mostly with Kebab). It als can be used as easing the itchiness of mosquito bites.

My garden has been putting out a late season surge of Shishito and Sweet Banana Peppers. Little grape tomatoes too.
From just 3 plants, which sort of did nothing all summer. Just in the last three weeks or so I have given a couple of bags away to neighbors.
I like Shishito Peppers sauteed in a little olive oil and spices, till they blister. A nice side dish.

A yearly milestone has been achieved.
I dug out the compost pile and sieved about 50gal ( 190l , or .5 bathtubs according to my microsoft calculator ) of fine compost.
In the spring I will empty my raised bed planter and fill some low spots in the yard.
Then I get to make up a new planter mix from the compost and other stuff.
Now I am clear to do one last grass mow with the first autumn leaves to start a new pile.
