..."Thunberg’s stance is an eminently reasonable one: The slaughter of civilians must end, and the occupation of #Gaza must end. And while it’s clearly a divisive position for the #climate movement in some places, in much of the world solidarity with oppressed and starving people is popular. In the global south, where the worst impacts of climate change are already evident, #Israel and the United States are widely criticized for their treatment of the #Palestinians. Even in the U.S. and Europe, many young people share Thunberg’s view, and they’re not alone; as Biden admitted at a recent fundraiser, support for Israel’s ongoing massacre is cooling.

Besides, standing up against the genocide of the Palestinians is hardly a distraction from the climate movement. Gaza is a climate issue. Palestinians are among the most vulnerable people in the ongoing climate crisis, partly because of the way the Israeli government cruelly restricts the water and electricity supply. And as my TNR colleagues have reported, occupation and war are worsening warming in the region, as bombs destroy the soil and the military and settlers uproot and burn Palestinian olive trees. Gaza now faces a grave environmental crisis as well as a humanitarian one. The secretary-general of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said as much at the U.N. climate talks in Dubai.

The reaction to Thunberg’s humane stance demonstrates the extent to which the alleged antisemitism of the Palestinian cause has become a wedge issue for the right against beloved icons of liberalism and the left, one that easily deranges and confuses onlookers. The accusations are ridiculous, and the fact that they have any traction at all shows how many have taken leave of their senses on this matter."...

..."Greta Thunberg was handed an ideal birthday present as the climate campaigner turns 21 today after the EU Commission put forward plans to announce a new target for greenhouse gas emissions reduction next month.

However, there is some concern member states will not be able to meet the radical targets.

The European Commission is set to announce a proposal for a 2040 climate target that could see member states pledge to cut net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to just 10 per cent of 1990 levels.

But there are signs that some governments are struggling to reach existing targets set for the end of this decade.

The 21-year-old Swedish activist has been critical of recent climate deals, including the one at the recent Cop28 in Dubai, which she has described as "a stab in the back".

She told Reuters: "This text is toothless and it is nowhere even close to being sufficient to keep us within the 1.5-degree limit.

I can understand #GretaThunberg...

It is usually a good left-liberal reflex to stand up for the supposedly weaker party. Helping the weak and kicking upwards against the powerful. The exact opposite of the right-wing radicals.

Unfortunately, our #society, and the left in particular, is so divided that it seems you can only protest together if you pursue 100% the same goals.

Fridays for future has never spoken out directly against #capitalism so as not to divide the #movement. Instead, they have used #newspeack and introduced the term climate justice, which includes a critique of capitalism.

#Greta is used to shitstorms. She is probably the most hated young person in the world by the right. Unfortunately, she does not yet have enough life experience to know that she should have kept quiet about the #MiddleEast conflict.

Ultra-right triumphs now that #Greta can be officially canceled.

#Climate #change has become irrelevant now that #GretaThunberg can officially be canceled. Saving the planet is now officially no longer important. Greta's statements had caused anger, which meant that everything she had said so far could be canceled. Climate scientists all over the world are sad because their boss Greta has discredited them. Governments around the world have already stopped their climate protection projects.

#Trump commented on the topic was: "Our American way of life only exists once, but there are many planets! That is why we are saving the #economy, not the planet."
