En 1992, votre discours a «fait taire le monde pendant cinq minutes». Quel a été son impact à long terme ?

C'est toute la question. Les #enfants me demandent à quoi a servi mon discours. Comment le changement arrive dans une #société ? Je pensais, enfant, que les dirigeants pouvaient faire évoluer les choses. N'est-ce pas logique ? Pourtant, après mon discours et surtout après l'adoption à Rio de l'ambitieux plan d'action Agenda 21, que s'est-il passé ? Cela a été suivi des pires années pour l'environnement. La décennie précédente avait été très favorable, avec des politiciens se déclarant écolos. Mais la montée en puissance des #multinationales et la #mondialisation ont stoppé cet élan. Et le monde a pris la direction opposée.

J'ai reçu un mail d'un père dont la fille s'est suicidée, apparemment par désespoir à cause de la crise environnementale. Qui peut lui en vouloir ? Si on lit les rapports scientifiques, il y a de quoi être dévasté. Mon fils de 10 ans me dit parfois qu'il préférerait être une grenouille ou un lézard, car ils ne font pas autant de mal que les humains. Que lui répondre ?

La perte massive de diversité actuelle concerne autant les #plantes et les #animaux que les cultures humaines, c’est le même phénomène. Or, pour faire face au crash climatique et à l’extinction de masse des espèces, nous avons besoin de modes de pensée alternatifs, d’autres façons de considérer le vivant et notre rapport à lui.
