In a time of post-post-colonialism, of anti-racist iconoclasm, a time in which the very notion of gender as a legitimate distinction is contested, and Christianity has been reduced to a scandal management system with costumes, a 74-year-old British gentleman will ride a fancy carriage to an old church where a few other elderly British gentlemen in gilded dresses will declare him emperor, patriarch and head of state because God says so.

You might think you live in a time of truth and reconciliation, or perhaps even, if you’re feeling optimistic, progress. But this week if you’re British or a member of the 56 sovereign states that still, somehow, find themselves in the Commonwealth, you’re waking up in a country where a priest is going to smear oil – vegan oil from Jerusalem – on a rather pinkish, rather broad forehead to signify one man’s status as the Lord’s anointed.

#Probiotics support your gut health

FALSE “Probiotics are live beneficial bacteria and yeast that can be found in foods such as yoghurt [with live active cultures], kefir, kombucha, kimchi and natto [fermented bean], and you can find them in supplements,” says Wallace. “There is some evidence that probiotic supplements may be helpful in some cases, such as easing symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome but there’s little evidence to support the many other health claims made about them – and currently no convincing evidence to suggest that taking a probiotic will benefit healthy people who don’t have gut issues. There are also many different probiotic strains that can have different effects on the body, so it is case-by-case. Better to support your gut with food, aiming for 30 different plant-based foods, including nuts, seeds, wholegrains, pulses, herbs and spices, a week. The more diverse your diet, the healthier your gut microbiota, which will mean better immunity and bettter mental, cardiovascular and digestive health.”

Quite a promotion:

The admiral of Russia’s Pacific fleet has left his position after a check of its combat readiness.

Adm Sergei Avakyants left his post as commander on Thursday as it was announced he will oversee a new centre for military sports training and “patriotic education”.

There is increasing evidence that the leak was not an intelligence operation by a state actor aiming to discredit the US, but more likely the consequence of a Pentagon policy of granting top secret security clearances to huge numbers of service members, civilians and contractors. The number of employees and contractors in the entire US government with top secret clearance is about 1.25 million.

Putin doesn’t want the war to end – he wants to blast us back to the 40s Soviet era

This part of Europe has not been on the crest of the wave of history since 1989. But it has never ceased through its literature, and stories, to offer warnings about what has already happened and could happen again. It seems to me that these stories have not been heard well enough. Here, we can clearly sense that history is not yet finished. Now we know and can formulate it: as long as there is a single bleeding wound of history on the continent, the entire continent bleeds. No one, no matter how many kilometres to the west they may be, can rest easy. The centre of Europe is not something static, stuck in Berlin or Paris. The centre of Europe is that mobile point of pain. Where it hurts and bleeds. Today it is in the east, in proud Ukraine.

Users, advertisers – we are all trapped in the ‘enshittification’ of the internet

It’s easy to see how it happens. Rule One for any online venture is to acquire large numbers of users quickly so that you can harness the power of network effects to keep them inside your walled garden. You do this by offering “free” services (Google, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram), or loss-making reduced prices (Amazon). Rule Two: once you’ve got them locked in, you turn them into a captive market for your real customers – advertisers and vendors. And once you’ve got them locked in then (Rule Three) you’re in a seller’s market – and have a licence to print money.

This is the enshittification cycle.

The Observer view on the war in Ukraine, one year on: an even more dangerous phase may await

The war has revolutionised German defence policy, silenced French talk of “strategic autonomy”, boosted EU unity, revived US commitment to the transatlantic alliance, dramatised the global north-south divide, reduced the UN to the role of hand-wringing bystander and given the UK an opportunity, after Brexit, to show it still has an international role to play.

The war has revealed the divided loyalties and moral confusion of many fence-sitting governments, including India, Israel, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Turkey. It also delivered a cruel blow to the foundations of international law: the UN charter and a paralysed security council.

It's the UN part that worries me.
