#headlines

I have some 'issues' with The Sun (NY) in their narrative stringing across stories and headlines (I've written elsewhere about that, and spent years researching the impact of #media and especially #headlines. Thin-sliced, a recent media watchdog graded them as factual but right-leaning in choice of words and story prominence. I agree.

But anyway, this is news, maybe of existential import, maybe just part of the scenery.

"A Double Win for Trump as a Date Is Set To Decide Fani Willis’s Disqualification — When He Could Be President-Elect"

A delay in oral arguments pushes the session beyond November’s election — meanwhile, the special counsel appeals his own disqualification.

Whether 'good' or 'bad' for 'the Georgia Case', &/or #justice, like so many other levels of #accountability and #democracy, depend now on whether "we" elect a deranged dictator and his #cult of powerful nihilists, or not. "Just the facts" here. #truth & #TrumpVIrus

Gee, look what I was doing (as a student) a mere 45 years ago.

It's true: "You can find anything online"

We looked at Rupert Murdoch's Post (Full page screaming headlines) vs. the NY Times' treatment (bold headline with facts),
and how the 'fake news' &/or emotive slant impacted viewers' perceptions (or not). This was - #ContextAndPerspective - in New York City in an era when people read newspapers, and they were on every corner in #newstands, just a notch forward in timeline from the days of "Extra! Extra! Read all about i!". Papers at newsstands and grocery check-out cash registers, were ubiquitous, and impactful.

And, in our opinion - myself and future social psychologist Pete Dan - there was a clear, empirically demonstrable difference between tabloid headlines (in this case the Post's screaming headline "Nuke Cloud Spreading" vs the NY Times headline about a hairline fracture at the 3-Mile-Island Nuclear plant, near NYC.

O-Bla-Di, O-bla da. Happy Weekend!

Reality of life and death in #Gaza
This world empire of the satanic deathcult is anything but civilized !
civilization is not civil but an evilization
people are just pawns in the great game played by the super rich vile villains

In Killing Gaza, journalists Dan Cohen and Max Blumenthal documented Israel’s 2014 war on Gaza.
Yet this film is much more than a #documentary about #Palestinian #resilience and #suffering.

It is a #chilling #visual #document #of #war #crimes committed by the Israeli #military, featuring direct testimony and evidence from the survivors.

"Max Blumenthal and Dan Cohen’s powerful new film, 'Killing Gaza,' offers an unflinching and moving portrait of a people largely abandoned by the outside world, struggling to endure." - Pulitzer-prize winning journalist, best-selling author and activist Chris Hedges.

First take: Not in the headlines on the network news. It's Kanye, Fetterman, Oz, trapped tourists, and breast cancer.... NBC Nightly News. So much for their journalism and priorities.

Hey, MSNBC - CNN way scooped you, but the story's still hot and waiting, as is democracy! Will you report out this #truth??

uff, just as bad CBS/ABC

CBS - 4' on school shooting in St. Louis, Kanye West no longer a billionaire

ABC - Earthquake in San Francisco, school shooting, Kanya

PBS Newshour: Election debates, hospitas stressed, gangs in Haiti, Palestinian conflict, new UK PM.....

Hello #news media!!

My first research was on #Headlines and social impact. Epic fail here!

Except this time, one winner of #truth telling: CNN (and #Woodward)

From Drought to Deluge on a New Planet

Tom Dispatch

Consider this perhaps the strangest thing of all in our all-too-strange world: the greatest crisis humanity has ever faced essentially never leads the news. Yes, the immediate crises of our world, most recently Vladimir Putin’s disastrous invasion of Ukraine, are 24/7 headlines for weeks at a time. And any set of events that sends millions of us into external or internal exile, as has become all too common on this planet of ours, should indeed be a focus of attention. But to put all of this in context, it’s estimated that within three decades up to a mind-boggling 1.2 billion human beings could be driven from their homes thanks to the burgeoning climate emergency. (...)

When [climate change] hits as fire or flood, as a dramatic weather disaster of some sort, the news often loves to show us the calamity at hand (and the all-too-photogenic weeping survivors). But the cause of it all, climate change itself? No such luck. (...)

Only recently the authoritative U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released its latest devastating report, produced by 1,000 scientists, on what we’re doing to ourselves. In the midst of the Ukrainian events, it got hardly a moment’s notice. (...)

Whiplashed

Those Who Contribute the Least to Climate Change Suffer the Most

By Jane Braxton Little

(...) While California may be a poster child for extreme weather events, they are occurring almost everywhere. Such wild swings from tinder-dry to inundation are known as climate or weather whiplash. (...)

When it comes to weather whiplash, Australia is exhibit A for Anthropocene, the current geological epoch dominated by the human impact on the environment. (...)

Conflicts between wildlife and humans are already common enough, but climate scientists expect them to increase as droughts, floods, and fires push animals off their normal ranges and into agricultural areas. (...)

And here’s the only good news: climate change is a problem with a solution. We humans created it, which means it’s solvable. That, however, would require societal and political will of a kind we simply haven’t seen yet. And that’s the bad news. (...)

“a damning indictment of failed climate leadership… that reveals how people and the planet are getting clobbered by climate change.”

Swain, the UCLA climate scientist, put it this way: “We’re on a train going faster and faster down the tracks with perfectly functional brakes. But the drivers, for whatever reasons, are choosing not to engage the brakes.” (...)

Raging California Wildfires Displace 120,000, Burn 1.2 Million Acres

MONDAY, 24 AUGUST 2020

Record wildfires in California have prompted officials to issue new red flag warnings, with high temperatures and gusty winds threatening to make an already historic series of wildfires even worse. At least six people have died, and nearly 120,000 have fled their homes, as 1.2 million acres have already burned — an area larger than the state of Rhode Island. Two of the wildfires rank as the second- and third-largest fires in California’s history. The fires were triggered by an estimated 12,000 dry lightning strikes amid a record-shattering heat wave driven by the climate crisis.

Smoke from California wildfires is now visible in Kansas

As wildfires continue to rage throughout California, residual plumes of smoke have drifted all the way to the Midwest, reaching as far as the northwestern region of Kansas.

Crews on LNU Complex fires prepare for small chance of lightning Monday

Updated 9:54 am PDT

Multiple wildfires are burning in the greater North Bay. Cal Fire is referring to them collectively as the LNU Lightning Complex. LNU stands for Cal Fire’s Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit, and you can find the latest evacuation info here. A map of the fire is available here. The biggest fires are:

Hennessey Fire (merged with Gamble, Green, Aetna, Markley, Morgan, Spanish and Round): Napa County, 293,602 acres, 26% contained

Walbridge Fire (merged with Stewarts): Sonoma County, west of Healdsburg, 54,068 acres, 5% contained

Meyers Fire Sonoma County, north of Jenner, 2,360 acres, 95% contained

Crews on the LNU Lightning Complex in the North Bay are preparing for the possibility of dry lightning and high winds Monday morning and afternoon, as thunderstorms move across Northern California.

“The Red Flag Warning continues until 5 p.m. today,” Cal Fire said in its Monday morning status report. “Thunderstorms are still predicted throughout the day, which causes erratic winds, extreme fire behavior within the existing fires, and has the potential for new fire starts.” (Find the full Cal Fire report here. ) see link -→
