This XDA Reporter replaced their monitors with XREAL smart glasses for a full week

These may not be full time permanent replacements for monitors, but they are great for portable use, and could potentially save a ton of desk area space. You can also work in a confined area (even on a plane trip, without the neck strain of having to look down the whole time, or having the passenger next to you read all your e-mail), with the illusion of space and the monitors being further away from you. Or they can also be used so that they don’t disturb someone sleeping (or working) next to you, or you can use them instead of having a large screen TV.

At even 60Hz to 120Hz, that is a pretty decent refresh rate, and more than I expected it to be. They are also not as heavy or cumbersome as many VR goggles are, weighing it at around 75g. Resolution is 1080p per eye.

It seems too that the glasses can connect to Linux computers that support USB-C DP video output.

But this type of device really needs to be tested in person before buying. It’s not the sort of thing you can easily show someone remotely, or via a video, to help make a choice.

Google ARCore: Everything you need to know about the Augmented Reality platform that works on most phones without special hardware

Google has tried to tap into the augmented reality world several times. Augmented reality, commonly known as AR, when used properly, can potentially be life-changing technology, but no tech company has yet managed to master it. Apple has taken the approach of using dedicated hardware, such as the LiDAR scanner included in iPads and iPhones, while other companies, like Google, are pulling everything off through software only. We’re definitely getting closer to perfect AR, however, and Google is one of the companies leading the pack, with their augmented reality SDK and technology, which is dubbed ‘ARCore’.

But what’s ARCore all about? What phones are supported? Most importantly, should you even care about ARCore at all?

Yes, I do have to say that the iPhone’s LiDAR sensor makes for pretty perfect AR imagery. Under the right conditions, Android can manage very similar performance, but generally the capturing can take a bit longer and require more patience. I used my iPhone to capture a car in 3D including the interior, but I still have to get that right on the Android phone.

Still, AR can be a lot of fun, and the linked article does give some examples of its use right at the end.

Even the things that voice assistants and #AR glasses already do well, phones do better. #Voice dictation works impressively well on both #Android and #iOS, and #Google’s Live View in Maps is already a pretty good augmented-reality #navigation tool. You’ll get better and more fun #photos out of #Snapchat on your phone than you will with Spectacles. Most of the promise of the #metaverse is already taking place in #Fortnite and #Roblox.

Mojo Vision’s next iteration AR smart contact lenses with Eye-Tracking is demoed to CNET

The lenses have microLED displays, smart sensors, and solid-state batteries similar to those found in pacemakers. The company claims to have a “feature-complete prototype” and are going to start testing, according to the BBC article. We imagine you can’t get much of a battery crammed into a contact lens, but presumably, that’s one of the things that makes it so difficult to develop this sort of tech.

Lots of practical issues to still sort out before anything like this goes mainstream, but good to see the research and design is still moving forward. It’s biggest benefit (less obvious, less stuff hanging on your head, etc) is also its biggest drawback (eye comfort, battery life, resolution). Of course, costs are not even a point of discussion yet.
