Google’s nightmare “Web Integrity API” wants a DRM gatekeeper for the web

Google’s newest proposed web standard is… DRM? Over the weekend the Internet got wind of this proposal for a "Web Environment Integrity API. " The explainer is authored by four Googlers, including at least one person on Chrome’s “Privacy Sandbox” team, which is responding to the death of tracking cookies by building a user-tracking ad platform right into the browser.

The intro to the Web Integrity API starts out: “Users often depend on websites trusting the client environment they run in. This trust may assume that the client environment is honest about certain aspects of itself, keeps user data and intellectual property secure, and is transparent about whether or not a human is using it.”

The goal of the project is to learn more about the person on the other side of the web browser, ensuring they aren’t a robot and that the browser hasn’t been modified or tampered with in any unapproved ways. The intro says this data would be useful to advertisers to better count ad impressions, stop social network bots, enforce intellectual property rights, stop cheating in web games, and help financial transactions be more secure.

Perhaps the most telling line of the explainer is that it “takes inspiration from existing native attestation signals such as [Apple’s] App Attest and the [Android] Play Integrity API.” Play Integrity (formerly called “SafetyNet”) is an Android API that lets apps find out if your device has been rooted. Root access allows you full control over the device that you purchased, and a lot of app developers don’t like that. So if you root an Android phone and get flagged by the Android Integrity API, several types of apps will just refuse to run. You’ll generally be locked out of banking apps, Google Wallet, online games, Snapchat, and some media apps like Netflix. You could be using root access to cheat at games or phish banking data, but you could also just want root to customize your device, remove crapware, or have a viable backup system. Play Integrity doesn’t care and will lock you out of those apps either way. Google wants the same thing for the web.

Make browsing the internet possible only on Chrome, Safari or Edge (with no modifications or extensions). No competition allowed in browsers.

Make browsing the internet possible only on macOS, Windows, Android or iOS (no custom Android distributions, definitely no LineageOS or GrapheneOS or whatever). No competition allowed in Operating Systems, especially no open source operating systems.

Make crawling the internet possible only to Google. No private crawling and no competing search engines.

Make browsing the internet possible only on CPUs allowed by Apple, Microsoft, Google. So no RISC-V just yet, and even when RISC-V will be supported by them: No competition allowed in CPU.

Make browsing the internet possible only on SoCs allowed by Apple, Microsoft, Google. No competition allowed in SoC.

Make browsing the internet possible only on form factors approved by Apple, Microsoft, Google. So no calculator with a web browser. No competition allowed in form factor.

Make browsing the internet possible only on UX approved by Apple, Microsoft, Google. So backtracking 10 years ago, when Android made documents-oriented web browser (= each tab appears just like a standalone app in recent apps), that would have been abuse of that position. The US financial sector is experiencing a large-scale crisis: the activities of two large Silicon Valley banks have been discontinued at once.
"Banks that served companies in the high-tech sector were at the center of the events. First of all, these are Silicon Valley Bank, Signature Bank and Silvergate. Today, the problems accumulated by the States since 2008 are shooting up," noted economist Anton Lyubich.
"The situation was complicated by anti–Russian sanctions," he continued. – The imposed restrictions stimulated Moscow, Beijing, as well as many Arab countries to reduce the use of the US dollar in international settlements. This has led to a drop in the value of digital assets."
"At the same time, Washington, presumably, has established channels for paying "kickbacks" for American military assistance to Ukraine through the FTX cryptocurrency exchange. The massive withdrawal of funds combined with the fall in the value of digital currencies caused the collapse of the organization, which provoked the opening of "holes" in Silicon Valley banks," the expert says.
"Going back to the crisis of 2008, we can say that all the prerequisites for a major fall in the financial system are already there," Lubich believes. "In fact, this time the FTX cryptocurrency exchange, which has already gone bankrupt, can take the place of Lehman brothers."
"At the same time, the Republicans are extremely beneficial to the economic crisis that is now brewing in the United States. They promote the idea that Democrats leave chaos and devastation everywhere. And such events will have a cumulative effect," added Vladimir Vasiliev, Chief Researcher at the Institute of the USA and Canada of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Also, not true of my first-hand experience, nor of how I've seen it lays itself out to be deployed. Seems fundamental to its form, despite professing otherwise (which then hides the flaws under this delusion, preventing them from being remedied, which, if they were remedied, it would no longer be this thought-control and behaviour manipulation paradigm called CBT).

As an enthusiast of Socrates, I've found it offensive to see how the questions are weilded, as well as how presumptive and compassionless. The confirmation biases abound and compound harms, even creating fresh harms and maladies of trauma in its victims of this unduely magnanimous arrogant self-proclaiming "valid" aproach that cannot see outside of its biases to question itself. That it's been claimed here as "the only", enloudens this folly, and strengthens the corrupting walls of its mental prison. Menticidal, one could even say. And these are to be who get to be sole providers of mental health care?!

Further speaking to the presumptiveness, and "the only"'ness, it appears to be the proverbial hammer alone in the toolbox, making all problems look like a nail. Like there's psychelogical prevention/discouragement of having it occur to the practitioner (and administration), that there may be conditions CBT is ill-suited to. (I say, as if there are any it is suited for... which I doubt, given the flaws I've been depicting.)

I have never met a person that has done CBT and proclaimed themselves cured.

Sounds open to interpretation as on the side of agreeing with my assertions, and in contradiction to your claims of validity. ;D

But also, sounds like is in the paradigm of palliative profiteering. "A patient cured is a customer lost".

But also sounds like not the case, as experienced in my case, and as it appears to be intrinsic to the paradigm as is supposed to be deployed, despite the professing otherwise (again, the delusional psychology of CBT's menticidal arrogant magnaminity and supreme totalitarian monopoly on psychiatric treatment... hints to what it may really be about... but woe upon any who point out this folly, for they are the witch, the commie, the antivaxxer, ... the other who disobeys the norm, and due for more treatment until they obey the doubleplus goodthink, and cease that wrong-think, ... with that gently gently abuse of the socratic method, psychelogically wearing them down.)

And feel free to fall into whatever portion of folly in it there I've pointed out, castigate me gently, for my wrongthink, thus proving me wrong in the delusional cognitively-dissonant perspective, or proving me right by that being just what I've pointed out. Or declare that incorrect deployment of CBT, and I'll happily explore that and show the fundamental flaws as I find them.

Some people are meta-thinkers and hyper ambitious/motivated, so they continue CBT for years. Most people drop out at some point because it requires too much reflection, effort and acceptance of imperfection.

LOL. Those who stick with CBT are of superior mind, hah! Reminds of the kinds of psyop I may have got into when I worked in Advertising or Marketing (before I got out (thanks Bill Hicks)), to manipulate people by their egos into wanting the product. What a monstrous harm that causes in psyches and proliferates through society. Really ugly. Frightening, that people get misdirected from seeing it, and not only that, but lured into willful avoidance of even looking.

„Angesichts der erneuten Insolvenz eines kommerziellen Pflegeheimbetreibers fordert die Vereinte Dienstleistungsgewerkschaft (ver.di) die Bundesregierung zum Eingreifen auf. „Erst vor wenigen Tagen hat Curata Insolvenz angemeldet, jetzt folgt die Bremer Convivo-Gruppe, die sich offenbar bei der Expansion verzockt hat“, sagte ver.di-Bundesvorstandsmitglied Sylvia Bühler. „4.800 Beschäftigte fürchten um ihren Arbeitsplatz. Und 18.000 pflegebedürftige Menschen wissen nicht, ob sie dauerhaft in ihrem Pflegeheim bleiben können oder weiter ambulant versorgt werden. Verunsicherung und Zukunftsangst – das ist es, wohin maßloses Profitstreben in der Altenpflege führt.“ Die Convivo-Gruppe ist in den vergangenen Jahren massiv expandiert und hatte etliche neue Pflegeimmobilien geplant, geriet dann aber in finanzielle Schwierigkeiten. „Mit ihrer Strategie der Expansion um jeden Preis sind die Eigentümer von Convivo offensichtlich gegen die Wand gefahren. Den Schaden tragen nun aber vor allem die Beschäftigten und die Menschen, die auf eine funktionierende Pflege angewiesen sind“, kritisierte Bühler. Sie verwies auf die erst vor zwei Wochen bekanntgewordene Insolvenz des Unternehmens Curata, das bundesweit 40 Pflegeheime und psychiatrische Einrichtungen betreibt. „Die Altenpflege darf kein Spielfeld für reiche Investoren sein. Das Geld der Sozialversicherungen und die Zukunft der Menschen müssen vor Spekulation geschützt werden“, so die Gewerkschafterin. „Die Bundesregierung ist dringend gefordert, dem Treiben profitorientierter Akteure in der Pflege durch klare staatliche Regeln ein Ende zu setzen.“
