The thing about Mastodon is it rose to making up the single largest constitution of the federation/fediverse in basically no time and out of (seemingly) nowhere. One would think it a minor pop culture phenomenon if they weren't careful.
The thing is, is that much like a CryptoKittie, I'm still yet to know a single person in the physical that actually uses Mastodon.

My advice for a pluspora alternative if you're doing an art blog:

I use SocialHome for my art blog, because it’s very stylish for an art gallery blog and it natively provides multi-column. However, it lacks any support for “pluses” or “likes”, which means that you get no feedback even if someone likes it on diaspora or Mastodon. It also hides all comments behind clickable and very tiny comment icons. The big problem is that you don’t see comments in your stream - if that’s something you care about. (It’s something that I care about, and it was pretty much a deal killer for me as a daily driver.)

You still get e-mail notifications if anyone comments/reshares your posts, so you’ll still get notification on your own stuff. If you don’t mind losing “plus”/“like” functionality, then SocialHome can be pretty cool for an art blog, I think.

I think the pod I use, socialhome.network is closed to new users, but I would guess that if I simply ask Jason Robinson he’ll let you create an account on it.

If you really want the plus/like interaction, then either stick with diaspora or try out Friendica. I think Friendica is the biggest option that federates with both the diaspora and Mastodon sides of the federation. That’s unfortunately not saying much, because we’re still talking only around 5000 active users (compared to 10 times as much on diaspora and way way more on Mastodon). Note that even though Mastodon has a huge user base, don’t get any hopes up on seeing any interaction from Mastodon users. My interaction on the Mastodon side is NEAR ZERO. Your mileage may vary.

Anyway, Friendica has various features which might convince you to switch - like post/comment editing, plus/likes on comments, and support for community groups. It’s worth experimenting with, at least.

I have not had luck making a multi-column userstyle for Friendica that works robustly. I gave up on it a long time ago though … maybe if I tried again now I’d have better luck. Friendica is under pretty active development, so it may be more of a moving target to try and customize.

Anyway, to get some idea which pods are active out there, check out these Federation statistic pages:

https://the-federation.info/socialhome
https://the-federation.info/friendica
https://the-federation.info/diaspora

Another alternative is Hubzilla, which is related to Friendica. But I think Friendica is more popular and Hubzilla doesn't really offer compelling advantages over Friendica right now. If you only feel like checking one of them out, I'd suggest checking out Friendica.

this is a russian podcast on history of the fediverse: https://open.tube/videos/watch/db9cc76d-093c-4347-a49a-9af4246a1d92

i have to say they did a comprehensive research, or did know the history very well.
it starts with the early internet, email, then explains situation with messengers, xmpp, xml, rss, tells about aaron schwartz, and goes in to early fediverse projects, starting from identica.

in this podcast, diaspora is a tragic story. near the end of the podcast they mention the ticket to support activitypub, and that the comments were mostly not about whether it should be done, but on how it should be done. and then comes dennis schubert, critisizes the protocol and rejects the wanted proposal. then they say that diaspora is getting weaker - quantity of nodes decreases, while fediverse is getting richer - more and more people are attracted.

mastodon was mentioned as a huge success. well, it is a huge success. but they also mentioned that the project is heavy, slow, not easily deployed, has too many dependencies. most of that can also be said about diaspora. the pleroma was presented as an alternative, which is much faster, easily updated without downtime, thanks to underlying erlang ecosystem. it also supports gopher!

i did not think socialhome will be mentioned. but jason robinson was mentioned several times, as federation activist, diaspora developer, then the-federation.info author, and then they described the socialhome project in details, starting with its history. mentioned that it has very little number of nodes, and expressed the hope that it'll be developed further.

they also were talking about pixelfed, funkwhale, peertube, mobilizon, and the blog engines that support federation: write freely, plume, and that wordpress is able to federate with activitypub nodes via special plugin.

overall, very interesting, for me, listening, and a very good introduction for newcomers. thanks to creators. i am really thankful to creators, i wish the text was published, because i know many prefer to read, not listen, like me, also it would make the text searchable.

AMA: Hello, my name is Jason and I am the author of Socialhome. Ask me Anything!

I would describe Socialhome as a social networking server with rich profiles. I kind of see it as a cross between Twitter, Tumblr and Pinterest. You can do statuses like Twitter, longer form posts like Tumblr and it has the visual layout more like Pinterest.

Pssssttt #podmins I am going to start looking at your main page in the body tags for content to help determine the language used on your pod. If your splash page is in English but you are not an English pod maybe change? If you have no splash maybe add some content in the language of your pod?

Would be nice to use the HTML tag, unfortunately they all show en even if your a pod of another language.

Thanks! Will help new users find a pod that's the best fit just a hair better!
