I must admit I never thought this would actually happen, #Threads federating with the Fediverse, but it did, woah. Pretty huge moment for #ActivityPub. Now lets hope #Meta plays it nice with interop, well as nice as any of the other bickering and sometimes somewhat poorly interopping #Fediverse platforms are doing :P

While I totally expect half of the Fedi to go on an instance blocking spree, personally I'm happy for this development. And hey, even if half of the Fedi does go on an instance blocking spree, that is fine. It's all a part of the freedom provided by a decentralized federated network.

It's a huge pity #Bluesky settled on building their own platform. We could be a very big nice happy family had they chosen to adopt ActivityPub during the evaluations they did.

I just hope resharing Zuck's first Fedi post wont demolish my poor #Socialhome instance 😅

Hey when did #Mastodon start getting #Markdown formatting? My posts from #Socialhome actually look almost as they should now, doing a random check from a Mastodon instance.

That "four images only" silly per post limit really should be lifted, most of my followers are probably on Mastodon and I always forget they wont see anything past the four images.

But on a serious note, I do get the fact a lot of people are not happy about #Twitter taking a hit from a nuclear missile called Elon. For a lot of people that was an important community, which is being actively destroyed. I feel for those people. And I also feel sad about the fact that one single man can destroy such a big and important platform all in one go.

It's annoying to be coming up with answers from hindsight - but hey maybe we shouldn't have large centralized platforms like Twitter that are able to be taken down by some douchebag billionaire. This is why we have decentralized platforms. They may be more complex to understand. They may not provide the same benefit for #capitalism to sell its products. But what they do well is provide resilience. No Elon can take down the #Fediverse - and that is a guarantee, not just words, because the fediverse is a collection of thousands of servers - and the number is going up by the day. Twitter is one server, which can be bought by a billionaire.

I don't want a #Mastodon either. I have my own platform, #Socialhome. But what I do want is to be a part of the Fediverse, and for social media to be more resilient to rich people going on shopping sprees for their own political agenda.

It's currently only possible to administrate Mastodon and Pleroma instances. If you want to login with a direct message, your instance must federate with social.inex.rocks and vice versa.

I've just installed an email server 😅

A combination of massive influx of #Fediverse users and #Socialhome still not having in-app notifications, just email notifications, has meant I ran out of my daily #MailJet send quota. And I'm not going to start paying $15 or such a month just for my social app notifications.

#Mailu seemed like a nice little project to try, and indeed it worked nicely out of the box. Now I have my Socialhome email notifications on a completely separate domain from my personal email, and delivery so far seems reliable - yay! Find Mailu here: https://mailu.io

Still not going to move my personal emails to self-hosted. Email is way too critical.

Socialhome.Network as a searchable federation archive

The Socialhome node https://socialhome.network/ is both widely federated AND searchable by non-members. It displays both posts AND profile pages even to non-members, which is NOT the case for Diaspora* pods.

If you're looking for specific content from a now-defunct pod, Socialhome may be able to turn that up for you.

You can search for a specific profile by the its handle, e.g., dredmorbius@diaspora.glasswings.com or dredmorbius@joindiaspora.com, for my present and now-defunct Joindiaspora profiles, using the site's Search feature.

My (now-offline at origin) Joindiaspora profile appears as:

Note that the profile GUID is NOT the same as it would be for my Joindiaspora profle itself (d8210c0de509264f`). The Diaspora* GUID can be used to construct a URL visible from the Diaspora* Pod you have an account on and are logged in to, but not as a globally-viewable third-party-accessible URL. Socialhome solves this problem.

That is, if you are on Glasswings, this URL links to my Joindiaspora profile:

But if you're not, it won't. Glasswings users might try a different pod such as Diasp.org:

Instead, third-party visitors are presented with a log-in / registration page. Socialhome solves this problem specifically.

Limitations

The downsides to Socialhome seem to be that:

• References to content and profiles does not follow Diaspora*-assigned GUIDs. That is, there's no automated way to refernece a specific post or profile.
• I'm not seeing an obvious way of exposing a JSON abstract of posts or profiles --- the Diaspora* trick of appending .json to the end of a URL does not work, and I'm not seeing a JSON abstract in the raw HTML. There may still be an API.

Photos are displayed but appear to be served from the original host, not separately federated. Once the origin host goes offline, photo links / embeds will be broken.

It's not clear how widely or deeply content is federated, though some should be better than none.

#SocialHome has been kind of weird for lately. I've had an account there for a while, and I liked posting my drawing there, but recently I have not been able to see my own profile. Each time I log on, it just says that an error has occurred, and shows a blank page. The content I post is still there, but I can't access it without searching through the Local stream. Odd.

It may be a good time to go and try out #PixelFed as another #FediVerse art dump site. I've mainly stuck around on #Diaspora, and occasionally poked my head in to #Mastodon. I'd really like to put more of myself out on the internet, if only because I've managed to make myself a hermit both online and real life. :P

Hah, fun. Thought there was some regression with federating to #Mastodon from #Socialhome.

Turns out, my #Dendrite was dead, and that caused all root level public post deliveries to fail to be delivered to #ActivityPub. Because of something failing at some point when delivering to #Matrix 🙈 Sigh... So many posts of mine people didn't see in the AP side!! I'm sorry all! Everything you've missed! 😱

But on the plus side, federation seems fine, just need to ensure failure to Matrix doesn't take down the rest of the delivery.

Also, makes me appreciate the Matrix protocol even more, with the consistency across instances, even after lots of downtime. I just brought my Dendrite up after what looks like months of being down, and I see all the recent messages in rooms like ✨ magic ✨.

Socialhome v0.13.0 released

Hello 👋 Yes, it's been a while! Eight months since the last release in fact. The project is still alive, but not as active as previously. Progress still happening once in a while, thus a new release!

Highlights

• Start adding Matrix support 🎉 Very, very early days, and totally experimental. Currently, if enabled and hooked up with a compatible Matrix server, local user accounts are mirrored to the Matrix side and additionally their public posts get mirrored in profile rooms and hashtag rooms. More later as things develop!
• Translations process! Socialhome can now be translated and is now fully translated to #French! Thanks to Alain St-Denis for the awesome work to both push through the translations process and also do the French translations <3 Other languages partially translated are German and Norwegian. Also thanks to Weblate for hosting the translations for us.
• More changes and fixes to ensure ActivityPub and Diaspora identities don't get duplicated, for remote platforms that have both versions (like Socialhome instances!).
• A bunch of bug fixes to the streams UI and to the federation library.

Socialhome is best described as a #federated personal profile with social networking functionality. Users can create rich content using #Markdown. All content can be pinned to the user profile and all content will federate to contacts in the federated social web.
