Does your phone yet have a Silicon-Carbon Battery?

The biggest change lies in the anode—the part of the battery that stores and releases electrons during charging. Traditional lithium-ion batteries use graphite here, but silicon-carbon batteries replace it with a silicon-infused anode. Why? Because silicon can store up to 10 times more energy than graphite. The result is a battery with higher energy density, meaning more power packed into the same space.

But silicon isn’t perfect. It expands and contracts as the battery charges and discharges, which can cause wear and tear over time. By combining it with carbon, manufacturers have stabilized the material, making it both durable and energy-dense. In short, these batteries last longer, charge faster, and take up less space.

These batteries can recharge fully in minutes, not hours. For users, that means a quick 15- or 20-minute top-up gives you enough juice to power through your day.

Phones like the Realme GT7 Pro, iQOO 13, OnePlus 13, OPPO Find X8 series, Vivo X200 series, and Xiaomi 15 series already have these batteries inside them.

La production de batteries menace un peuple autochtone en Indonésie

Les Hongana Manyawa (Peuple de la Forêt) sont l’un des derniers peuples de chasseurs-cueilleurs nomades d’Indonésie.
Leurs terres et tout ce dont ils ont besoin pour vivre risquent détruits par de grandes entreprises avides de produire des véhicules soi-disant respectueux de l’environnement, destinés à des personnes vivant à des milliers de kilomètres de là.

L’Indonésie mène un vaste projet d’exploitation minière sur l’île d’Halmahera. Le pays veut devenir un producteur majeur de batteries et cherche à convaincre Tesla, Ford, Volkswagen et d’autres constructeurs automobiles d’acheter son nickel.

L'ONG Survival International a réussi à convaincre Basf de se retirer du projet, et à rendre Tesla et Ford conscients du problème, mais elle dénonce l’entreprise française Eramet, détenue à hauteur de 27 % par l’État français : « Eramet a connaissance de la présence des Hongana Manyawa dans sa concession depuis au moins 2013, or l’entreprise continue d’opérer sur leurs terres. »

Pulsed charging enhances the service life of lithium-ion batteries.

"Lithium-ion batteries are powerful, and they are used everywhere, from electric vehicles to electronic devices. However, their capacity gradually decreases over the course of hundreds of charging cycles. The best commercial lithium-ion batteries with electrodes made of so-called NMC532 and graphite have a service life of up to eight years. Batteries are usually charged with a constant current flow. But is this really the most favourable method? A new study by Prof Philipp Adelhelm's group at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin and Humboldt-University Berlin answers this question clearly with no."

I skipped the chemical formula for NMC532 but it's in the article. Basically a lithium, nickel, manganese, cobalt compound.

"Part of the battery tests were carried out at Aalborg University. The batteries were either charged conventionally with constant current or with a new charging protocol with pulsed current. Post-mortem analyses revealed clear differences after several charging cycles: In the constant current samples, the solid electrolyte interface at the anode was significantly thicker, which impaired the capacity. The team also found more cracks in the structure of the NMC532 and graphite electrodes, which also contributed to the loss of capacity. In contrast, pulsed current-charging led to a thinner solid electrolyte interface and fewer structural changes in the electrode materials."

"Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin researcher Dr Yaolin Xu then led the investigation into the lithium-ion cells at Humboldt University and BESSY II with operando Raman spectroscopy and dilatometry as well as X-ray absorption spectroscopy to analyse what happens during charging with different protocols. Supplementary experiments were carried out at the PETRA III synchrotron. 'The pulsed current charging promotes the homogeneous distribution of the lithium ions in the graphite and thus reduces the mechanical stress and cracking of the graphite particles. This improves the structural stability of the graphite anode,' he concludes. The pulsed charging also suppresses the structural changes of NMC532 cathode materials with less Ni-O bond length variation."

BESSY stands for "Berliner Elektronenspeicherring-Gesellschaft für Synchrotronstrahlung". In English, "Berlin Electron Storage Ring Society for Synchrotron Radiation". Which would be BESRSSR. Never mind. Yes, "Electron Storage Ring" got all smashed together into "Elektronenspeicherring" in the German. "Society" seems like an odd part of the name in English. "Gesellschaft" can be translated "society" but could also be "company". Maybe "organization" would be a better word. Synchrotron radiation is a type of radiation emitted in particle accelerators when charged particles are pushed into going in circles or curved trajectories instead of being allowed to go in straight lines like they want to, and apparently requires "relativistic" speeds, which I take to mean, charged particles near the speed of light.

Raman spectroscopy is a type of spectroscopy where, I'm not sure exactly how it works. You transmit a fixed wavelength of light but the vibrations of the molecules nudge the energy levels up or down such that the molecules will or won't absorb and re-emit ("scatter") the photons. Not sure how the word "dilatometry" fits into all this. "Dilatometry" just means the measurement of the amount of volume a material takes up.

PETRA III is a particle accelerator in Hamburg run by DESY, the German government's national organization for fundamental physics research. DESY stands for "Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron" and PETRA stands for "Positron-Electron Tandem Ring Accelerator" (apparently doesn't have both German and English versions?).

All in all, a pretty sophisticated amount of analysis of battery recharging.

Still, the optimal frequency is not known.

Ce qui génère #pollutions de masse, gabegie d’ #énergies, #déforestation, #défiguration... (sans parler de tous les dégâts et gabegies commis par l’usage, les infrastructures et la fabrication des objets qui sont alimentés par ces #batteries au lithium, notamment les bagnoles électrifiées)

Et la « transition » ...du business capitaliste exige de plus en plus de mines, avec des taux de minerais utiles toujours plus faibles...

Can you safely revive a dead lithium-ion battery? Yes – here’s how

More and more devices now come kitted out with rechargeable lithium-ion batteries — you know, the ones that look like the old-style AA or C cell batteries, but are a slightly different size. The most common size is the now ubiquitous 18650, but there are loads of other sizes in use too, such as the 14500, 16340, and 26650.

These batteries are incredibly safe if treated properly, especially when you consider how much power they contain, and can last for many years and hundreds of discharge cycles before needing to be replaced.

Sometimes basic chargers can be “better” than clever chargers! Chiefly the issue being solved here is when lithium-ion batteries discharge down below their cut-off voltage point.

I did not realise you get rechargeable coin cell batteries such as for the CR2032

I’ve long been using various types of rechargeable AA and AAA batteries, including the 1.5 volt versions, but I’ve just never seen any mention at all about these button/coin cell 3.6V Li-Ion batteries being rechargeable.

It’s said that there are rechargeable versions of the LIR2032, LIR2025, LIR2032H, LIR1632 and the LIR2016. I use various of these in AirTag trackers and some other devices.

Looking at a local electronic supplier, I see they do indeed stock rechargeable CR2032 batteries. They cost a bit over double the price of the single use battery, but if you can get a few charges out of them, it may be worth it.

A downside though that I see is the rechargeable battery has a stated capacity of 30mAH, whilst the single use version is 230mAH. A different site shows a capacity of 40mAH (plus or minus 5mAH) and the life cycle of over 500 recharges. Some batteries state as high as 70mAH.

So, certainly the capacity is a good 4x less. It means what used to last 12 months on a charge, would need recharging at least every 3 months with a rechargeable battery. Cost wise though, it is still going to be 100x cheaper (500 recharges divided by 4 as the same life as a single use battery), and that also means 100 batteries not being disposed of.

I’d certainly like to give these a try.

Wow, I didn't even know diamond semiconductors were a thing.

It says that the old nuclear batteries were large, dangerous, hot, and expensive products. For example, some old-tech atomic batteries used Plutonium as the radioactive power source. Meanwhile, the Betavolt BV100 is claimed to be safe for consumers and won't leak radiation even if subjected to gunshots or puncture."

My Solar Power Exploits

I've been to User Mode and seen the Promised Land. :) It just seems the Closed Loop management of the Inverter and Batteries were 'fighting' each other. Don't know any other way to explain it. Have gone to Open Loop User Mode on the Inverter and allowing the Batteries BMS to manage themselves. I've given the a couple of good full charges and the functioning/operation of the batteries seems much better. My current readings from Solar Assistant:
